Since 2004, 3350 small business owners across 65 communities have used our StreetWise 'MBA'™
to acquire the business knowledge, management know-how and relationships they need for their
businesses to achieve scale. During boom times, the Great Recession, and this uneven and
inequitable recovery, Interise businesses have created net new job growth, stabilized local
employment, and contributed to the economic and social resilience of their communities.
Now, more than ever, lower income communities need thriving established small businesses.
Recent research from the Brookings Institution on the decline in small business dynamism and from
Harvard Business School on nation-wide increases in concentrated poverty underscore the national
imperative to build the capacity and resilience of existing growth-orientated rms, especially in
lower income communities. Widening income and wealth gaps, rising income inequality, rapid
gentri cation of urban core communities... these are the reasons we are partnering with
government agencies, local institutions, and business associations to make our StreetWise 'MBA'™
available to local business owners across the country.
Another recession will come. This is why we are building a national network of partners: to ensure
that as many urban small businesses as possible have the organizational capacity needed to
weather it with as little job loss as possible. In 2016, we will continue to expand our partnership
network to ten more cities, and through the work of our research team, we will deepen our
understanding of the relationship between the business environment and small rm resilience.
Every year we measure the social and economic impact of our network. In this 2015 Impact Report
we share those reported by businesses ompleted the StreetWise 'MBA'™ in 2012 - 2014.
In March 2016, we look forward to sharing our rst ten-year impact report and progress towards
our vision–resilient communities, thriving small businesses, and an economy that works for all.

About Our Research
Interise has collected evaluation data since its very first cohort in 2004. Business owners participating in the Interise StreetWise ‘MBA’™ complete a pre-program
business assessment to provide baseline data on key business metrics, on business characteristics, and on their behaviors and attitudes towards various aspects of
running a business. After graduating from the StreetWise ‘MBA’™, business owners complete annual assessments for three years to provide post-program data.
The results in this 2015 Impact Report were based on 2014 business outcomes for Interise alumni. Two of the most compelling metrics from 2014 are the rate of job
creation by businesses — eight times that of the private sector — and the apparent long-term changes in CEO behaviors shown in the “As a CEO, I…” graphic. The latter
suggests that participation in the StreetWise ‘MBA’™ creates lasting changes in the way CEOs run and strategize for their businesses.
