This newsletter from University Residential Life provides information about upcoming events in the residential communities at Northwestern University. It lists the dates and locations for remaining community gatherings before the end of the school year. It also includes pictures from a staff teambuilding day, information about storing belongings over the summer, electronics recycling, profiles of two residential life staff members, and upcoming dining hall and theater events.
This presentation was presented to a face to face audience and an online one, through elluminate, as part of the Innovations Showcase, for the Victorian Education and Early Childhood Development in Australia. The showcase was a prelude into Education week, where Shine is the theme.

Meet the Res Life Staff
Karen Kalal
AC in KASH
Hometown: Cicero, IL
Family: One 18 year old brother who
is a freshman in college
What is your favorite part about
Northwestern?
The diversity on campus, it’s close to
my home and Willie the Wildcat!
What are your goals for the year?
Work related: Get more involved on campus and become
more active in professional organizations. Personally: Be
healthy and active.
What is the best part about working in KASH?
I love that my area is so diverse which means that I get to
work so many different types of students. We have
upperclassmen, freshmen, small houses, suite style,
traditional style and special interest communities such as
GREEN House and next year, CSS! I also love the view of
the beach from Kemper.
Favorite thing you like to do in your downtime?
Spend time with my family and friends, play with my puppy,
Frankie, go to the beach, watch movies, workout and bake.
How do you maintain balance in your life?
Spending time with my friends and family and making sure
that I get off campus from time to time really keeps me
grounded.
What are your plans for summer?
I’m getting married!
Quick Facts:
Coffee or Tea? Neither. Diet Coke please.
Morning person or night owl? Night owl.
Cats or Dogs? Dogs.
Cubs or White Sox? WHITE SOX
Thin crust or Chicago-style pizza? Deep dish.
Area Coordinator
(CA in Foster Walker)
At the 25th Annual Student
Recognition Banquet, Peter
was honored with the
Emerging Student Leader
Award. This award is given to a freshman or
sophomore that demonstrates tremendous
leadership potential on or off campus. This
includes the following criteria:
Extracurricular involvement at Northwestern.
Demonstrates awareness of beliefs, values,
attitudes, and emotions.
Commitment to an organization, community
group, or work environment.
3. Meet the Res Life Staff
Hsiao-Tieh Hsu
CA in Foster Walker
Hometown: Taiwan
Family: One younger brother
Year: Junior
Major: Chemistry and Linguistics
What is your favorite part about
Northwestern?
I love the people here. I’ve met so many great students,
professors and staff members. I also have been able to see
and experience things that I wouldn’t have seen at home.
Northwestern has such a nice campus!
What are your goals for next year?
I want to make the best out of my last year. I want to explore
more classes and activities and spend more time with my
friends. I got rid of some of my harder classes, so hopefully
I’ll have more time to enjoy the campus.
What is the best part about working in Foster Walker?
The staff! We are all so supportive of each other and help
each other with ideas and programs. I never feel powerless or
alone. And Tiffany is a great AC! She is so responsive, gives
good advice and brings out the best side of all of us.
What groups/organizations are you involved in?
I’m a Peer Facilitator with Gateway Science Workshop
(organic chem.), and next year I’m getting promoted to
Senior Facilitator. I’m also in the Typhoon dance group.
Favorite thing you like to do in your downtime?
I like to read Chinese articles and classic literature, as well as
The Economist. (There’s something about the British wit that
I really like) I love to sing in the shower, and I go on runs to
the B’Hai temple whenever I can. I also like to cook—my
brother is a chef, and I always say that cooking is like
chemistry—you put things together and heat them up!
What are your summer plans?
I have an internship near L.A. with Amgen which is a biotech
company. I’ll be doing some chemistry research and
development.
Quick Facts:
Coffee or Tea? Chai.
Morning person or night owl? Morning person.
Cats or Dogs? Dogs.
Cubs or White Sox? I’m not a big baseball person, but Cubs.
Thin crust or Chicago-style pizza? Chicago-style.
