Despite the many race and gender-related challenges faced by Latinas in the K-12
public school administrator field, how did Latinas identify themselves in this study?
The Latina in public school administration acknowledged that their gender and
race created a challenge for them to get into their leadership positions.
What were the conclusions
All the Latinas in the study acknowledge the barriers they faced in their
positions and it gave them a better sense of cultural awareness. Now these
women want to employ a diverse set of people in the schools.
Please describe the methods in this study.
The study was conducted under the theoretical framework of Critical Race
theory, a research methodology employed to analyze the experiences of
persons of color with race, racism, and other forms of subordination.
What were the barriers noted in this study?
(1) Discrimination on the basis of race during the screening, selection, and
interview process;
(2) Negative perceptions by colleagues due to the already low numbers of
Latinas in administrative positions; and
(3) A perceived teacher, administrator, and community preference for white
administrators, for instance.
What would you suggest as a remedy to the challenges faced by
these women?
These women have an opportunity to show that Latina school administers are just as
effective as white man that statistic hold leadership K-12 schools.
