2. Despite the many race and gender-related challenges faced by Latinas in the
K-12 public school administrator field, how did Latinas identify themselves in
this study? How do you know?
Latinas identified with themselves as being highly successful in their careers.
Despite challenges in the K-12 public school administrator field, they
demonstrated characteristics such as being maternal, empathetic, and sensitive,
along with others.
LATINA IDENTIFICATION
3. Mixed Methods Approach
• 30 survey responses
• 4 interviews with two public school principals and two assistant principals
(in the state of Florida)
• Critical Race Theory- A research methodology employed to analyze the
experiences of persons of color with race, racism, and other forms of
subordination.
METHODS
4. • Discrimination on the basis of race during the screening, selection, and
interview process
• Negative perceptions by colleagues due to the already low numbers of
Latinas in administrative positions
• White administrators are preferred
BARRIERS
5. Race and gender are both inseparable factors that challenge Latinas when
attaining leadership roles.
Overall, Latina women struggle when trying to get higher paying jobs in the
education administration, due to race and gender barriers.
CONCLUSIONS
6. Perhaps schools and other places should create more programs which embrace
and defend Latinas and other women from different cultures. This way,
people’s minds will begin to expand and they will become more accepting.
Also, if there are more Latinas as public figures, more people will look up to
them and it will be seen more often. Hopefully this will make people more
accepting as well.
