The use of spatial data in policy development and reviewIIED
These slides, presented by Sarah Darrah from the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre at the Mainstreaming biodiversity workshop in Sogakope, Ghana, in November 2016, look at how spatial data can be used as a tool to support mainstreaming.
Darrah acknowledges that lack of access to data, and a lack of expertise in using spatial data, can be barriers to using this information for mainstreaming, but where there are existing research and data collection programmes and exchange of information between institutions, then spatial information can be a valuable.
She illustrates this using an example from the Lake Victoria basin, looking at the potential impacts of agricultural development on biodiversity.

HAS THE WORLD HEARD YOUR STORY YET?
Currently, investments in research and development in Africa are about 0.6% of the global total of R&D investment, significantly lower than other regions. One of the foremost strategies to address this knowledge imbalance would be the packaging of African knowledge products in such a way that they are available and accessible on the internet. There is no doubt that Africans are producing lots of knowledge in their informal conversation as in formal engagements of varying types. This knowledge is being produced daily in villages and urban spaces, by African government officials and businesses, by students and researchers. Traditional healers are also applying indigenous knowledge to offer cures for COVID-19. Thus, the problem from an African perspective is less that of knowledge production and more one of the gathering, packaging and dissemination of the knowledge.
This training present practical tools, platforms and strategies to effectively disseminate your research results to various stakeholders. It would help you make your research visible beyond academia and create more impact in society.

7. how we work
NEED A high impact report?
An influential social media campaign?
An information-rich website?
WE REVIEW your key documents, including evaluations and specific research outputs, and interview your
researchers and managers to uncover the insights – and successes – that can remain hidden amid technical
detail. We look at your audiences – funders, policy decision-makers, partners, clients – to discover their
primary interests.
Then we create stimulating stories that show how the work your organisation is doing has the potential
to meet these interests. The next step is to package these stories, enhanced with striking images and
explanatory information graphics, and choose the most appropriate media to use in sharing your insights
with your audiences and the wider world. Since we offer a start-to-finish service, we make sure that final
products are placed where they will have the most impact, and follow up with a review of uptake.
