The maritime sector
The maritime industry in the Bergen region has a long and proud history and has been a pillar in the city’s commerce. The region has close ties to the sea and our historical significance in national and international trade has been at the forefront for creating possibilities.
Today the maritime industry is a global industry with intense international competition and turbulent markets. The maritime industry has proven to be versatile, innovative and dynamic. Shipowners and shipyards account for the core of the industry with world leading supplyers and service that complement each other’s core industry, like financial services and information technology focused on the maritime industry and marine insurance companies.
The maritime industry in the Bergen region is dominated by industrial shipping. This is built on long term and strong customer relations, where the customer’s expectations and the cluster’s knowledge of managing and operating ships are the central drivers – not financial speculation.

Bergen and the Bergen Region is known as the Gateway to the Fjords, for the Fish market in Bergen, the mountains in the western Norway, The Aquarium and several other tourist attractions.
The Bergen region is an exciting place for culture and nature-based experiences. Bergen is the biggest cruise port in Northern Europe, with more than 300,000 passengers visiting Bergen and the region in 2012.
Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords, and many companies provide day trips or round trips in the fjords and the surrounding mountains. The famous composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) comes from Bergen. His home can be visited in Bergen. Also the famous violinist and composer Ole Bull (1810-1880) was born and lived in Bergen.
