Rural tourism can help compensate for disadvantages in marginal agricultural areas by providing income from tourists. Developing eco-tourism is seen as a major source of income and potential main economic activity. An information system for rural tourism needs to offer a complex program of tourist services and activities based on new information technologies, including building ICT infrastructure, using wireless communication, GIS data collection, and advanced visualization. The REGEO project aims to create regional information systems for tourism and other tasks using decentralized geo-multimedia databases with tools for online, offline and mobile access.
