Breakfast meeting 15022012 on new arenas for learning and collaboration outLars Sverre Gjølme
This topic is related to some viewpoints and experiences around the emerging social and more collaborative oriented training and learning environments seen in corporate environments. It also pinpoint how technology probably will play a vital part in this (r)evolution.
The deck is based on project experience from various clients who needed to create a faster, smarter and better eTraining environment for their employees and their customers.
Some “believes” discussed are:
- “YouTube training” and interactive virtual interaction with clients will hit the corporate sector and technology will be an important enabler for improving the learning- and collaboration experience
- Barriers between internal and external corporate users will be broken down – which enables reuse of learning material for both employees and customers
- A more cost efficient, fast-to-produce-and-deliver, high quality learning approach will demand change for both HR, IT and most corporate leaders.

Augmenting Education: The Collision of Real and Virtual Worlds [VRA]Bryan Loar
This presentation explores augmented reality and potential uses within arts education. The presentation has been enhanced from the previous October 2012 presentation. Videos have been added, new examples have been provided, further explanations have been added to the notes, and the information has been tailored to the VRA audience.
Presented as part the Visual Resources Association’s 31st Annual Conference session, “Enhancing Education Beyond the Classroom Experience via Visualization Technologies.”
The PowerPoint presentation with embedded videos can also be downloaded as a zipped file at http://bit.ly/AR_pptx_vra2013 [Note: Viewing the presentation with embedded videos has been known to be problematic. The door, the wind, the bird and the valisejason hobbs
Presented at the 4th Italian IA Summit, the IA Konferenz in Cologne, Germany 2010 and the Cape Twon and Johannesburg SA UX Forum meet-ups in 2010. This presentation will unpack the benefits, and provide a possible approach, to the formation of an institutional discipline from casual practice for user experience design. Practice-Led Research (PLR) will be positioned as an effective agent in the transformation of the seemingly inherent and natural acts found in casual practice into the formal arrangement of accepted truths and regulated practices of the discipline. The aim is to introduce practitioners to the concepts so as to begin establishing discussion and awareness
PROCESS MADE VISIBLE: Activate Your Potential as a Research Practitionermake_it_happen
In this case-study presentation, participants learned about embedded assessment methodologies developed in a year-long residency dedicated to "Making Process Visible." During this residency, we visually mapped the HOWs, WHYs and MOTIVATIONs of our arts in education partnership work in the school's public gallery space. The gallery is transformed into a learning lab for our school community, where art objects, student and teacher voice, and new technologies become vehicles for meaningful story-telling and reflection.
This PPT / workshop was presented as part of Common Ground, an annual state-wide arts education conference hosted by Partners for Arts Education.

Language is Infrastructure for InteractConf London 2014Andrew Hinton
I had the pleasure of speaking at Interact London in October 2014. I presented an updated version of this talk, which I originally gave at IA Summit earlier in the spring. The talk is based on content from my book, Understanding Context. You can read more about it at http://contextbook.com.
In this version, I have updated the way I'm talking about how language works as environment: instead of 'semantic affordance' I'm now calling it 'semantic function.' (Which is in keeping with how it's now being described in the book.)
Meaningful Technology for Humans: How Strategy Helps to Deliver Real Value fo...Björn Rohles
Presentation from the Silicon Techie Night #24 (2024) about strategy. It outlines ten impulses how strategy helps to deliver real value for people, by aligning business mission, vision, and strategy.
On September 8, 2011, Design that Matters Director of Product Development, Elizabeth Johansen, co-facilitated a workshop at SOCAP11 alongside Sami Nerenberg of Design for America and Saul Garlick of Think Impact. The workshop was part of a series of design thinking workshops curated by Sarah Brooks.
In design, after immersing with the stakeholders, one of the most difficult and little-explained next steps is to take all of those observations and turn them into frameworks to guide the design going forward. Design that Matters, Think Impact, and Design for America co-created a workshop to give participants a crash course in framing challenges. Think Impact provided a case study and observations from the field. Then participants were asked to imagine a better future together.

This presentation contains the argument for the need of a framework (the Firma Model developed with Terence Fenn) to assist the human centered design process when dealing with problems of great complexity and situated in society. This is a theoretical piece and explains the model in some detail. This presentation was delivered at the Spring UXSF in Tokyo, Japan 2015 hosted by Sociomedia
Discover how the Firma Model by Jason Hobbs and Terence Fenn has been applied to social design challenges, it's use in education, for the self reflection of the designer and as a basis for a taxonomy of design tools and techniques. Presented at the Spring UXSF in Tokyo, Japan 2015 hosted by Sociomedia.
Presentation at UX Joburg. It's a discussion about the big picture of 'experience' - looking beyond features to the human condition, the designers consciousness and the nuances of how this emerges in the iterative design process.
A discussion and set of recommendations for designing in a time of liminality and the key role that information architecture (IA) plays. First presented at EuroIA in Brussels Sept 2014 #EuroIA then at the UX SA Conference in Cape Town Oct 2014 #UXSA14

THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
It is broadly acknowledged
• That the complexity of the world we live in steadily
increases
• That the problems we face are systemic and grounded in
social realities
• That design has been battling to respond in it’s current
siloes (graphic, industrial, architectural, digital)

THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
So to recap…
1.A mass of data is created through research
2.It is organised such that it can be understood
3.And in so doing presents a solution
Hang on. That’s information architecture, isn’t it?

12. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
But we don’t think of IA either as design or problem solving in this
way because
• It's been defined as 'digital thing’
• It’s not positioned as a 'design' practice (rather
information or library science oriented)
• And we don't think of the typical briefs (business
ones) as being situated in social realities

IA deliverables are wireframes, site maps, task

No. The IA deliverable is the synthetic resolution of the problem / solution
ecology as expressed in deliverables which strive to describe it

14. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
Illusion 2
The design solution is a website, mobile app, etc.
No. The design solution is the resolution of the problem / solution ecology; the
design artifact is a website, mobile app, etc.
REFRAMING INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

15. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
Illusion 3
IA derives its meaning (relevance, value, purpose)
by delivering measurable value to businesses
No. The relevance, value and purpose of IA is in making sense of problem /
solution ecologies; that business value is derived from this is but one of many
potential consequences
REFRAMING INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
A ROUND TABLE WORKSHOP AT THE IA SUMMIT 2013 - BALTIMORE
16. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
IA has a whole lot more to offer the world than just site maps,
wireframes and task flows.
• Our utility extends way beyond digital
channels; there is a broader value-
proposition
• We dumb down our value because we
struggle to explain it; explain it correctly and
the value will present itself
REFRAMING INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
A ROUND TABLE WORKSHOP AT THE IA SUMMIT 2013 - BALTIMORE
17. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
• Broaden the research frame and
assumptions about artifacts and IA becomes
a discipline, channel and product neutral form
of problem solving
• As in design thinking, from this position, IA
becomes a tool for innovation
REFRAMING INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
A ROUND TABLE WORKSHOP AT THE IA SUMMIT 2013 - BALTIMORE
18. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING
Implications:
The thinking skills, methods and tools of IA should
be positioned as important indeterminate problem
solving tools
Because meaning is explicitly articulated (not
hidden in the artifact) it should be debated at more
critical levels
REFRAMING INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
A ROUND TABLE WORKSHOP AT THE IA SUMMIT 2013 - BALTIMORE
19. JASON HOBBS & TERENCE FENN
THE INFORMATION ARCHITCTURE OF MEANING MAKING

Because meaning is explicitly articulated, design
practice becomes self-reflective
Self-reflective design creates bridges between
practice, theory and teaching vital for preparing
students of design for the challenges of the world
