Ian Martin completed a summer internship at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute where he worked on developing lab-on-a-chip devices for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. His supervisor, Dr. Niamh Gilmartin, writes that Ian demonstrated keen interest in research, reliable work, excellent technical skills, and produced high quality work in a timely manner. Dr. Gilmartin highly recommends Ian, feeling he will make the most of any opportunities.

Reference Letter for Ian Martin
To whom it may concern
Ian is a final year student of the B.Sc. in Genetics and Cell Biology honours degree programme in
Dublin City University and as well as acting as his supervisor for a summer internship in the
Biomedical Diagnostic Institute in 2013, I have had the privilege of lecturing Ian in the 3rd and 4th
year of his studies. During his internship in the BDI he was involved in a project in the BDI
concerned with the production and evaluation of lab-on-a chip devices for cardiovascular disease.
Ian’s role in this project was the production and evaluation of various lab-on-a-chip prototypes for use
in the diagnostics of these diseases and he also participated in and presented at the weekly group
meetings with clinicians from the RCSI.
Ian demonstrated a keen interest in research and science by actively seeking a research based
laboratory experience during the summer to complement the range of skills that he had already
attained during his studies. He was reliable, honest and showed an excellent technical ability in the
execution of all the tasks assigned to him. He excelled at tasks that I would have considered
technically challenging for somebody with his experience and his work was always of a very high
standard with a clear attention to detail and was produced in a timely manner. He has excellent
communication skills in both written and oral form and engaged very well with other team members
and staff in the BDI.
I have no hesitation in recommending Ian as I feel he will fully appreciate any opportunities that he is
presented with.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Niamh Gilmartin, Research Fellow, BDI
