Dissertation title: The use of Phylogeny to predict medicinal properties from traditional medicine in the family Fabaceae. • Research was computer based, consisting of searching scientific papers to form a large database. • Received a first for my project presentation. Student Representative for Part 3 Biological Sciences • Represented the student body on the Staff Student Liaison Committee. • Chaired the committee meeting of Summer 2014. Previous work experience: 17/11/14-‐ Represented CiteAb at a Sparkies Awards Tech Showcase -‐Took a biotechnology company to a technology event run as part of the SPARKies awards 2014, which was attended by over 50 British embassies and UKTI delegates.
- 2. My role included making the work of the company understandable to a non-‐biological audience. The event resulted in achieving good UKTI contacts and eventually in funding for CiteAb staff to attend valuable sector conferences overseas. 1st August 2012 – 2nd September 2012-‐ Swansea University DNA Damage and Cancer group. -‐ Included specific scientific training. I also worked at the UKEMs international conference, which included engaging with the delegates and supporting administration. September 2010 – September 2011-‐ Swansea University Bio-‐control and Natural Products Group -‐Included training in basic scientific techniques and searching databases for protocols and materials. Also had training in writing laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, risk assessments and health and safety forms. 25th-‐ 29th June 2007-‐ Bush House Veterinary Group, Ammanford -‐ Included answering phones, monitoring anaesthetic concentrations and holding animals for vaccinations, building a rapport with the clients. Skills: 2 Customer service skills, interpersonal skills and veterinary specific skills. Voluntary work: I helped set up and run the Reading University Macmillan Cancer Support fundraising team on campus and ran the Reading Half Marathon for Macmillan. This work included managing fundraising events, running the blog and social media accounts and attending meetings and events in the Berkshire area. Skills: Social media, organisational, team leader, teamwork. Other Information: • I helped set up the Reading University Synthetic Biology society at Reading University and held the position of public engagement officer within the society. Skills: Teamwork, organisational. • I represented University of Reading in Rowing in the first novice boat and have represented Wales at Dressage in the inter-‐regionals and at the Home International for two years. Skills: Teamwork, motivation, dedication. • I completed the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards with expeditions to Gower. I received the Chancellors award for commitment to teamwork and leadership. • I was a Senior Prefect in Llangatwg Comprehensive School and as part of this role I represented the School at official events and organised duty timetables. Skills: Organisational, Leadership, Teamwork. • I currently manage a book review blog in my spare time. Skills: Basic HTML, written communication, social media marketing. • I backpacked to Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and China independently, organising all travel and accommodation myself.
