Samantha Clarke was hired as a Library Exam Period Monitor in the James A. Gibson
Library at Brock University for the 2012/2013 academic year and has continued in that
position. She was promoted and additionally hired as a Peer Assistant in the
Matheson Learning Commons from 2013/2014 to the present.
The Learning Commons is a dynamic, student-centered space located on the main
floor of the University Library. Featuring advanced technology, integrated service
points, and a variety of study spaces, it is designed to enhance the scholarly pursuits
of the Brock community. This welcoming environment offers unique opportunities for
students to collaborate with their peers, exchange ideas and find academic support.
The Peer Assistants have the following responsibilities:
 providing customer service (direction, assistance and guidance) at the Learning
Commons Reception Desk;
 enforcing the Library Code of Conduct, particularly Noise and Food/Drink
policies;
 ensuring the security of materials and equipment by monitoring exits/alarms and
the use of facilities, services and resources;
 providing basic support and troubleshooting problems relating to computer;
hardware/software, printers, photocopiers and classroom equipment;
 promoting upcoming workshops and events of the Learning Commons;
 setting up and shutting down equipment/classrooms for scheduled workshops;
 collecting and compiling user statistics;
The Library Exam Period Monitors have similar duties but are responsible for the
staffing/security of the Library at the Circulation Desk during extended hours
(11:00pm-2:00am) held during Examination periods.
Samantha has proved to be an extremely reliable and conscientious employee who
possesses many leadership qualities. She is able to grasp new technologies and
procedures quickly, and her customer services skills are excellent. She is always
friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and she readily volunteers for additional duties
such as working late/additional shifts. Her assistance, maturity and congeniality is
greatly appreciated by other members of the Peer Assistant team. I very much
appreciate her attention to detail, and her ability to initiate and complete projects.
We greatly enjoy having her as part of our team and she would receive my highest
recommendation.
