Redesigning the Academic Library WebsiteJoe Marquez
This talk covers taking a user-centered approach to redesigning the academic library website. I emphasize the importance of the wireframe before HTML is written. I also explain how the Sonoma State University Library is implementing the Xerxes 2 discovery system as well as the library's mobile website. Presented at Internet Librarian 2010.
Looking at Indian academic library websites: A content analysis approach Vasantha Raju N
This document summarizes a study that analyzed the content features available on Indian academic library websites. 135 university library websites were examined across four categories: state, deemed, institutes of national importance, and central universities. A coding scheme was developed to analyze 50 variables across 5 categories on each site. The results showed that over 50% of sites included basic features like contact info, hours, and links to e-journals. However, less than 50% included more advanced features like news/events, FAQs, tutorials, or web 2.0 tools. The study concluded that most Indian academic library websites still represent a Web 1.0 approach and need to modernize interfaces and services to better meet user needs.
From street campaigning to online campaigning: Indian national political p…Vasantha Raju N
This document analyzes the content and design features of websites for major Indian national political parties. It examines how these parties use their websites to engage citizens in political discourse. The study finds that while the BJP and INC sites provide good information, overall the sites have limited interactive features for participation, mobilization, and campaigning. It notes that engaging youth will be a challenge and that web technologies could play an important role in civic engagement and political discourse in India. Recent trends, like politicians using Twitter and Facebook, indicate Indian politics is gaining momentum online, but it remains to be seen if upcoming elections could be considered "Internet elections."
Internationality of Journals: A Casestudy of LIS JournalsVasantha Raju N
The document analyzes the internationality of two Indian Library and Information Science (LIS) journals, Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) and DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT), using nine criteria including publication language, inclusion in databases, distribution of editorial board/authors, distribution of users/citations, and online access. The study found that while both journals are published in English and available online, they had limited international contribution based on the criteria examined over a two year period, suggesting ways to improve internationality through greater foreign participation and open access.
The document describes the design of the new Surrey City Centre Library in Surrey, British Columbia. What do Technology Users think about JDF? (2005)VIGCbe
This document summarizes the results of an online survey conducted by the Flemish Innovation Center for Graphic Communication (VIGC) in March/April 2004 on technology users' knowledge and perceptions of JDF.
The survey received 142 responses, mainly from printers and prepress companies. It found that while the JDF "brand" was widely recognized, in-depth knowledge of JDF specifications and products was limited. Respondents saw benefits to JDF for data exchange but had doubts about its complexity and benefits for smaller companies. Future importance of JDF was seen as higher over longer timeframes of 3-10 years. The survey concluded that while awareness of JDF was growing, implementation will be a long

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.

“The social and cultural functions of built spaces
have become inseparable from the simultaneous
operation of multiple communication systems within
and among them. Architecture no longer can (if it ever
could) be understood as an autonomous medium of mass,
space, and light, but now serves as the constructed
ground for encountering and extracting meaning from
cross-connected flows of aural, textual, graphic, and digital
information through global networks.”
-- William J. Mitchell, Placing Words
