This document discusses acids and bases according to several theories. It begins by describing the properties of acids, including reacting with metals and carbonates, conducting electricity, turning litmus paper colors, and neutralizing bases. It then discusses the properties of bases. The Arrhenius theory defines acids as substances that produce H+ ions in water and bases as those that produce OH- ions. However, this theory has limitations and does not account for all acids and bases. The Brønsted-Lowry theory broadens the definition to any substance that can donate or accept protons. Strong acids fully dissociate in water while weak acids only partially dissociate. The pH scale measures the concentration of H+ ions on a

Reconciling greenhouse gas emissions from measurements and modelling in the l...icarb
1) Current greenhouse gas emission reporting methods provide simple estimates that may not accurately reflect actual emissions and do not help guide mitigation.
2) Process-based models can provide more detailed and accurate estimates of emissions by taking into account factors like soil type, temperature, fertilizer use and crop growth, which inter-annual reporting methods do not.
3) Improving emission estimates through measurement data, refined models and reporting approaches can help develop agricultural systems that reduce environmental impacts from greenhouse gas emissions.

The document discusses Royal Dutch Shell's efforts to reduce flaring of natural gas in Nigeria. It summarizes Shell's flaring reduction program in Nigeria, which has invested over $3 billion to gather 60% of associated natural gas production since 2000. The program aims to spend an additional $4 billion on oil and gas projects to gather another 35% of associated gas by 2014-2015. This would reduce Shell's flaring intensity in Nigeria below the global average. The document also notes that sustained investment in gas infrastructure and deregulated gas pricing are needed to significantly grow Nigeria's domestic gas industry.
El Paso Corporation is a major natural gas company that owns pipelines and conducts exploration and production. The presentation discusses the implications of carbon regulation for natural gas companies and El Paso's strategies. Regulations could significantly increase costs for natural gas. El Paso aims to make its new Ruby Pipeline project carbon neutral through offsets, efficiency measures, and allowing trading. The company also commits to assessing and reducing its emissions footprint to prepare for a carbon constrained future. Natural gas may play a bridging role but its role depends on regulation stringency and other energy sources.

Ecopetrol's exploration and production strategy focuses on four drivers to increase production to 1.3 million barrels per day by 2020 and add over 6 billion barrels of oil reserves. The first driver involves increasing production and recovery factors at current fields through drilling, non-thermal recovery methods like water injection, and thermal recovery. The second driver is an exploration program focused on key areas in Colombia and internationally. The third involves assessing unconventional resources, and the fourth pursues acquisitions and partnerships.

Entered into force on

Today, has 170 parties

2. Dioxin inventories (SC)
Development and maintenance of inventories of
releases of unintentional POPs (= polychlorinated
dibenzo-para-dioxins and polychlorinated
dibenzofurans, PCDD/PCDF) a requirement for parties
(n=172 = legally binding obligation);
National action plan to be updated every five years;
Guidance developed and COP-endorsed through
Expert Group on review and updating of the Toolkit
Harmonized reporting format developed;
Expert Group recommends to include BAT/EP process
into Toolkit process.

Updating and review process
mandated by Conference of the
Parties, started in 2006
some new emission factors
proposed for COP-5 (April 2011)
http://www.chem.unep.ch/pops/pcdd_activities/default.htm
4. Recommendations of Toolkit experts
Process for Toolkit review and updating is adequate, should
continue.
New information shared through the Stockholm Convention
clearing-house mechanism and the UNEP Chemicals website.
Parties be aware that formation of PCDD/PCDF is accompanied
by releases of other unintentional POPs, and their minimization or
elimination can be achieved by the same measures.
Assessment activities at the country level should thus focus on
PCDD and PCDF as “indicative for unintentional persistent
organic pollutants” as a basis for identifying and prioritizing
sources of all unintentional persistent organic pollutants.
Parties should be encouraged to use the Toolkit (according to the
source categories listed in Annex C to the Convention, grouped
into the source groups specified in the Toolkit).
