Record Label Research
1. Record Label Research
Catbird Records is an independent record label hailing from Columbus, Ohio. The record label was
created in September 2005. It is now based in New York City. Follows a unique style of being self
funded, everything is funded through advertising revenue on their blog. Catbird records released
Forgotten Triangles EP by Apollo Ghosts in 2009, a band shares a very similar genre and image
that that we want to replicate with Andrew Huang.
Apollo Ghosts (2008 - 2013) shares a similar aesthetic that we want to create with Andrew. A very
surreal band, with dreamy songs and pastel colours. This is seen in the above pictures. They are
also a very simplistic band, with a humble star image, that we aim to replicate with Andrew.
Through Apollo Ghosts, Catbird Records has an image of washed out colours and underground
music, which is a definite possibility for Andrew’s star image and persona.
Fueled By Ramen is an American record label, a division of Warner Bros Music Group. It was
founded in 1996 by John Janick and Vinnie Fiorello. The label was founded in Gainesville, Florida,
and is now based in New York City. Iconic artists of Fueled By Ramen include Travie McCoy,
Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco and Paramore. Paramore in particular is relevant to our
2. artist, Andrew. Paramore uses a lot of pastel colours and washed out lighting, along with colours
reflected back onto the face, similar to the style of Flume.
The simplistic style of font, messy handwritten creates an effect we aim to replicate with Andrew.
The black backdrop reiterates this simplicity, while the pastel colours show off their low-key
uniqueness and ambiguity. Through Paramore, Fueled By Ramen has become iconic for acts like
theirs, making them a good choice for Andrew Huang
Future Classic is another independent record label, based out of Australia. It was founded in 2004
by Nathan McLay, and has a specific focus on the genre of alternative and electronic, which is
exactly what we want to replicate with Andrew Huang. Active artists include electronic giant Flume,
as well as Ta-ku, Chet Faker and Cashmere Cat. Flume especially creates a star image and vibe
with him that we believe would be right for Andrew.
3. Lighting on the face, bright colours and a moody vibe all add up to create Flume’s iconic star
image. This star image includes a quiet, low-key style, not flashy or showing off, comparing to an
artist like Katy Perry. It brings him down to the level of the people, keeping him humble, while also
bringing uniqueness and ambiguity to the table. Through Flume, Future Classic is known far and
wide for unique electronic alternative music, making them a perfect fit for Andrew.
Spinnin’ Records is the final choice for Andrew, another heavily electronically focussed, founded
1999 in the Netherlands. Iconic artist include Afrojack, Calvin Harris and Avicii. These artists all
follow a similar style to Andrew, heading in the same direction of electronic music, deep and
moody. In particular, Calvin Harris has a star image that we aim to replicate with Andrew.
Simplistic and stylish, Calvin is represented with washed out lighting and a classy black and white
effect. Spinnin’ Records is known for this, making them a good option for Andrew.
