1. To whom it may concern,
I took Arabic lessons, both MSA and ECA, with Nourelsabah Mahmoud Marzouk
Mahmoud for nearly two years during my stay in Cairo and can assure you that she is an
excellent teacher. Three things are especially worth mentioning:
1) Nour works extremely hard in preparing lessons in advance for her students, making
sure to tailor-make everything to fit the students’ goals. For instance, she knew that I
struggled with listening so made sure to incorporate challenging audio files along with
the transcripts that she herself painstakingly took the time to type into my lessons. I know
she’s investing similar amounts of preparation time with her other students as well.
2) Nour possesses the necessary social skills and knowledge base to teach successfully to
a wide variety of students with different backgrounds and Arabic levels. She has
successfully taught elderly Spanish men, young Japanese women, and demanding Swiss
graduate students. She can assist students in comprehending the grammar of classical
Arabic poetry just as she can dissect the colloquial Egyptian of contemporary pop music.
3) Nour inspires her students to do well with her energy, encouragement, and good sense
of humor. These are not qualities to be found in every teacher, and they should not be
underestimated. I always looked forward to my early-morning classes with Nour because
I knew that she would perk me up (even more than my coffee) and get me excited about
the lesson, regardless of the subject matter at hand. Her good attitude is a catalyst for
Arabic language acquisition.
