ISOC today not only plays a role of a prominent organization and community but has been visionary in
creating the concept of developing the next generation of leadership. This vision has been highly
matched by the leadership in creating effective strategy of communication and future planning but has
created a global network of people who believe in bring change in their society with the help of internet.
New values of definition
1. Next Generation Leadership
2. Open standards
3. Gender equality
4. Internet for SDGs
5. Multistakeholder bottoms up approach
6. Internet for innovation
7. Network of communication and collaboration
Indicators of Growth and development
Especially when you look at Internet Society there is only one thing that comes to mind ISOC is for
everyone. It covers the voices and rights of each and every individual who uses internet in any part of
the world. Its members are spread in vast geographical terrain and speak different language but one
thing that unites us all is the power of development and change. This growth and development at
individual chapter members can be evaluated with
1. Membership Drive
2. Diversity of members
3. Research and survey conducted
4. Social media presence and activities
5. Programs launched and its effectiveness (Long term)
6. Individual Representation in other programs
7. Programs and activities initiated at individual level and region
8. Flow of information and communication
9. Strategy of planning and communication
10. Role of internet governance process
11. Opportunity of next generation leadership
Limitation and hindrances
1. Chapter Politics: Looking at the Chapter level, with high opportunity and recognition chapter politics
is something that plays an important role in the overall growth and development of the chapter.
Chapter politics hugely affects the diversity and at times may also result in repetitive leadership and

selection of certain chapter leaders for various opportunities which demotivates and create a situation
of mistrust.
2. Lack of Multistakeholdersim: In most practices lack of Multistakeholdersim is resulted due to chapter
politics which fails to limit the numbers and growth of chapter members. In such conditions the chapter
leaders are more prone to be rigid about the membership growth policy resulting in less opportunities
for the new members. Apart from that due to lack of Multistakeholderism may fraction groups which
may result in low motivation and competition in terms of efficiency.
3. Limitation of Multistakholderism: The definition of Multistakholderism may represent involvement of
various stakeholders but at ground level reality Multistakholderism not only represents a dynamic
collaboration but in absence of transparency and openness it also highlights favoritism and nepotism
where people are picked in term of personal contacts.
4. Chapter Networking: Chapter networking refers to the tendency of a chapter trying to grow its
network among other available chapters. It shows the quality of development and growth. It also
focuses on the leadership and vision of the chapter and how it’s operating. Chapter networking helps to
determine the growth and knowledge sharing and various level of cooperation and collaboration.
5. Transparency and openness: Transparency is one of the most important traits of any organization
whether it’s a financial report or transparency in terms of communication. If a chapter fails to
acknowledge it into practice, it results in frustration and low motivation of members.
6. Communication and social networking: Communication should be maintained at all levels from the
ISOC international to all its chapters and members. The communication and database must be
maintained with the clarity of free flowing and disseminating the information and opportunity to all
irrespective to their position safeguarding the right of the organization applying condition as per its
need. Irrespective to the various level of information flowing people also have the right to know the
information. Social media can play an effective role in creating a buzz.
7. Lack of Monitoring and evaluation: Due to lack of monitoring and evaluation of executive members a
chapter may be harnessing a weak model of practice despite its good reputation. If the chapter leaders
are well tuned with better tools like survey and questionnaire on quarterly and yearly basis, it can result
in better cooperation and communication channel.
8. Favoritism: Favoritism is yet another hindrance that is preceded by the politics supporting and
favoring only few selected members of the chapters. This can also result in grouping people of your
interest for his/ her personal benefit. The chapter administrator needs to be vigilant and should focus
more towards evaluating the executive committee timely and correctly.
Recommendation for ICOMM 2016
1. As the internet activities and recognition are growing, it has been noticed in most of the
chapters that the chapter membership activities are limited and are less focused towards
accepting more members
3. Recommendation for ICOMM16 by Shreedeep Rayamajhi
2. With more recognition, exposure and travel opportunity, Executive committees of the chapters
are limited in a more closed door system
3. Members participation are limited within few objective and roles
4. Internet Society represents a community but the limitation of one chapter in one country limits
the reach and focus. It needs to expand and grow. Multiple chapters and community is a best
policy
5. More communication and better coordination method required, As lack of communication from
ISOC international to chapter members has created a gap in between nature and purpose of the
main objective of communication
6. Discussion list are silent, what are we doing?
7. Social media and members need to be more engaged with proper tools and communication
strategy
8. Chapter grants and programs should not be focused on reports and targets, we need
sustainability and better results
9. More focus required towards organizing national internet Governance Forum, which is hugely
lacking
10. Chapter networking and cooperation required in terms of knowledge sharing and developing
collaboration
11. Awareness or capacity or discussion program to be launched at individual level of chapters to
initiate communication with chapter members
