- 2. Greg Gerkens, an educational professional in New York, most recently served students in special education programs in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES system. Greg Gerkens holds a variety of advanced professional credentials, including literacy education, special education, and ELL certifications. In the state of New York, English Language Learner (ELL) enrollment has increased by 20 percent in the past decade. ELL students now make up nearly 10 percent of the public school population. In response, the state of New York made major regulatory changes in 2014, opening several new routes to allow educators to better serve ELL students, notably including the TESOL program.
- 3. The state has also made provisions for dually certified teachers, professionals who can provide instruction in ELL and an academic content area simultaneously. Certified teachers in New York can now attain the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification, which allows them to teach ELL students in various settings without attaining an additional degree. This is an individual certification pathway, and specific requirements will depend on previous coursework.
