6. Key differences from small screens
Not portable
Persistent—often on in the background
Viewed from a greater distance
Often a shared display
7. Key differences between big screens
Physical sizes vary dramatically
Viewing distances vary widely
Hardware and software varies
unpredictably in quality and capability
8. Two types of Big Screens:
The Digital Broadsheet The Big Board
Large monitors TVs: 30-60 inches
22-30 inches Projectors: 30-100 inches
Not mobile (for now) Outdoor displays: honkin’ huge
High-resolution (and getting higher) Low-resolution (even so-called ‘HD’)
Used 18-24 inches away from eyes Used 5-10 feet away from eyes
9. Designing for the Digital Broadsheet:
High resolution + close viewing distance = High info density
High information density allows for complex layouts: multiple columns of
body type; generous whitespace;
10. Designing for the Big Board:
Low resolution + large viewing distance = Low info density
Low information density calls for simple layouts: hierarchical, linear,
screen-based navigation; larger type; still, lots of whitespace.
11. Resolution is not a good indicator of context.
30” 40” 60”
720 x 480 1280 x 720 1920 x 1080
60” 40” 30”
1280 x 720 1920 x 1024 720 x 480
Given the ranges of resolution and sizes, you can’t really plan to design
for a standard set of breakpoints (not that you ever really could, anyway).
12. Overscan: The Return of the Bleed.
Actual display panel can extend
beyond the border of the bezel.
Define a safe area; treat the outside
like you would a bleed area in print.
Different hardware has different overscan settings, as well as different
physical bezel arrangements—overcompensation is probably a good idea.
13. Use cases for the Digital Broadsheet:
Not just yet.
But someday.
14. Use cases for the Digital Broadsheet:
