The University of Reading received its first computer, an Elliott 803, in April 1962. [1] This was secured through an effort led by professors from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics who recognized the need for on-campus computing resources. [2] The Elliott 803 had a transistor-based design, 4KB of ferrite core memory, and cost around £30,000, representing a major investment for the time. [3] This first machine marked the beginning of Reading's computing service, which expanded over the following decades through additional equipment purchases and the establishment of machine rooms.
