Truth In Rashomon
A kindred spirt of Mo Yan from the island of Japan, filmmaker Akira Kurosawa shares Mo Yan
views on human nature. For these two men, humans have the capacity for great evil as well as
great good. In Kurosawa's Rashomon, we see the fathomless depths humans will sink to, in order
to preserve their own selfish desires. Throughout all three accounts of the samurai's death, we see
how all the characters falsify the truth in order to serve their needs. From Tajomaru's grandiose
fantasies of himself to the wife who shifts from sinful serpent to docile doe to lessen her
involvement and finally the samurai who even in death refuses to tell the truth so that his honor as a
great warrior and disciple to the bushido code will remain intact. Even the woodcutter

Rashomon Conflict
The title of the movie is Rashomon, and it was directed by Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa.
Only one of the principle characters are named in the movie, this one character being a bandit by
the name of Tajomaru. The other principle characters are only refered to as the woman, and the
woman's husband. The movie's country of origin is Japan, and was released in the year 1950. 2.
The main conflict lies within solving the mystery of what happened during the event in which the
woman's husband is killed. The whole movie revolves around this conflict, and is only resolved at
the end of the movie. There are other small conflicts in the movie, such as one that is related to the
main conflict. This conflict involves the stories of the medium, the woman, and Tajomaru. This
conflict lies in a group of people trying to figure out which story is the true one. 3. Though there are

It is Tajomaru's actions that lead to the whole event in the first place, as he is the one who attacks
the woman and her husband, yet it is the woman's actions that play a large part in the event, as she
causes her husband and Tajomaru to fight till the death. The only character who can even be
considered the protagonist is the woodcutter, one of the characters who isn't seen on camera near as
much as most other characters. Despite not even being an actual main character, he can be
considered the protagonist due to his actions at the end of the movie. Despite having six children of
his own, and little money, he takes in an abandoned baby, to raise it as his

The Rashomon
The film that was screened in class was titled the Rashomon and was directed by Akira Kurosawa.
At the beginning of the film, it opens up on a priest and woodcutter sitting underneath a gate. A
guy by the name of Kichijiro joins the priest and woodcutter and they begin discussing a murder
that took place a few days ago. Then towards the middle of the film it transitions to four
conflicting stories of what happened on the day of the murder. The first story is the wife of the
samuri who died. The second story is the sumari story who died but tells his story through a
medium. Finally, the last story was told by the woodcutter. In the end, all three stories were different,
it stops raining and the woodcutter walks away with a baby left behind.

Censorship In Rashomon
Rashomon (1950) is a film about a murder and the different testimonies of its eye witnesses. While
seeking refuge from a violent rainstorm, a Priest, a woodcutter, and a man find themselves sharing
the story of a recent murder. Both the Priest and the woodcutter testify in the trial of the murdered
Samurai. Japan didn't leave WWII unharmed; the war wrecked many of the movie theater. Not only
did this war hurt the film industry by destroying the places where they were showed, it also ushered
an age of censorship. American occupation left Japanese Cinema restricted. The occupation

Narrative In Rashomon
The Curious Case of Rashomon
When a samurai is murdered and his wife is raped in the woods it is necessary for the courthouse to
find the murderer and bring punishment upon him according to the law. Albeit this is seemingly a
typical murderer solving case film it is the method of narration that makes the film differ from
others. Rashomon is a famous Japanese film by Akira Kurosawa that tells a story of the same
circumstance in four different versions according to the story teller. This particular type of narrative
is so intriguing resulting for it to become its own effect. Not only is Rashomon famous for its
narrative but also how it reflects and reveal many aspects about truth and lies.
While it may not look like it, it can be seen that there are three main frames to this narrative. The
big story or the main frame of narrative is at the gate of Rashomon where a woodcutter, a priest, and
a commoner are discussing the samurai's murder cases. The woodcutter begins the film by telling the
background and the general story about the cause of his confusion about the case. The second frame
narrative is consists of the bandit's story, the wife's story, and the samurai's story told through a
medium. In between each of the flashbacks the film returns to its main narrative of the film at the
gate of Rashomon with the mean discussing each of the accounts. However, thinking about it closely
it can also be said that the story the woodcutter is telling about the three suspects is...show more

Examples Of Self Preservation In Rashomon
In Akira Kurosawa's Japanese murder mystery film, Rashomon, Akira tells the story of a
slaughtered samurai. The story of the murder is revealed four times to a judge, each by a different
person who witnessed the crime. Each of the stories contradicts the previous. Each of the stories has
a constant of rape, murder, and the use of a dagger as the murder weapon, but each story depicts
differing methods and motives. The stories seem equally plausible and the film does not disclose
which of the characters is telling the truth. Each of the characters has their own agenda and a
reputation to protect. In this case, all four stories were fabricated to protect the characters'
reputations. Especially in the era where this film takes place, reputation meant everything. All living

He claims to have tricked the samurai to step off the mountain trail with him and look at an arsenal
of ancient swords he had found. He then ties the samurai to the tree and returns to capture the
samurai's wife, giving the impression that Tajomaru is sly and shrewd. In Tajomaru's version of the
story, he entices the woman making it seem as if the woman falls in love with him. This however,
is contradicted by the other stories where it is said that Tajomaru forced himself onto the woman.
Out of honor and respect, Tajomaru frees the samurai and they begin to duel for the woman's love.
Tajomaru tells of a valorous and honorable sword battle that ensued between the two, whereas the
story of the woodcutter states that the duel was clumsy and that Tajomaru took a cheap shot at the
samurai, which ultimately ended his life. He tells this embellished, spectacular story of a damsel
in distress, how he is to rescue her and they are to marry and live happily ever after together, to

Gender Roles In Rashomon
Rashomon (1950) is a film by Akira Kurosawa that deals with themes of truth, humanity, and
morality. There are multiple approaches one could take to analyze this iconic film, this essay will
focus on how each character performs their gender and how that affects how they are perceived by
the other characters. While there are obviously many different personalities within each social class,
these characters are primarily identified by their roles in society: the bandit, the husband, the wife,
the commoner, the priest, and the woodcutter. These archetypes play out theirgender roles through
both how they present themselves in their own tellings, as well as how they are utilized as characters
in the film, in fascinating ways.
The bandit and the samurai husband are both gendered as male, but they each perform one of two
variants of it. The bandit is the concept is masculinity unchecked, with no laws or morals restraining
him (exemplified by his primary identification as The Bandit), overwhelming and controlling. In
every account he is forceful and violent, though his competency varies from story to story. This a
man acting mostly on his basic instinct. In his own telling, he is significantly stronger and more
capable than the others said that he was,...show more content...
He is performing maleness, checked by his social class and lifestyle. He is tied up for most of the
story, and in the woman's account, he does not emote at all, even in the face of perceived betrayal.
This lack of emotion, or rather control of emotion, is juxtapositioned against the thief's constant
angry outbursts, and the woman's tears. He was clearly very upset with his wife, however he was
angry, not sad (a feminine reaction), yet has learned to not express emotion in order to perform
masculinity in a more restrained way, as is expected even today of "higher class" people. His form
of masculinity is performed through

Violence In The Movie Rashomon
In contrast, the movie Rashomon has a more negative perspective represented of women. The main
female lead in Rashomon is the wife of the Samurai/dead man. In the wife's recollection of events,
she explained that she had been raped by the bandit, where after her husband looked at her with
disgust and repulsion. This is a scenario that occurs too often in our present–day society. The rapist
runs away after committing the crime (rape), leaving the victim in an attempt to lead a normal
life. Often, the victim will feel dirty or unlovable, thinking their partner will no longer see them
as the same. In Rashomon, after the incident, the Samurai is disgusted by his wife after she's been
raped. This corresponds with the discriminating mindset that rape is the fault of the victim. Some
say it's due to what you wear, or how you act that determines your fate (Sarmiento, 2011). In the
movie, it was the women's fault because of her astonishing beauty. Today, the conversation of
rape is still a very large social issue. However, from my personal perspective, the movie
Rashomon seemed to discredit the seriousness of the situation. Rape is an action that cannot be
wiped away from someone's memory, and will seriously affect its victim for (most likely) the rest
of their lives (Sarmiento, 2011). In the movie, after the wife had been raped, she asked her
husband to kill her, as she couldn't bear for him to look at her anymore. We must however, keep
in mind the time period in which this movie was released, as well as the culture. In 1950's Japan,
women had little authority/independence (Anan, 2012). Therefore, a movie such as this wouldn't
receive as severe backlash. However, if it was released today, I believe that it would receive
negative feedback due to its insensitivity towards the social issue of rape. In comparison, Spirited
Away and Rashamon both have themes of women depicted throughout, however in very different
methods. Spirited Away portrays women as strong, developing, independent female leads. Whereas
Rashamon illustrates its female lead as weak, vulnerable and tragic. The theme of women and their
portrayal in East Asian cinema is that of an unbalanced social issue/concern. What makes Spirited
Away unique in

Exploration Of Good And Evil In Rashomon
On one level Rashomon, by director Akira Kurosawa, is a classic whodunnit, a tale of rape,
murder, deceit and redemption. How was the samurai warrior killed and his wife violated in lonely
woodlands at a time of dissonance in medieval Japan? Suspects emerge and an inquisition is held.
But why do all players profess their guilt, rather than protest their innocence? Kurosawa has taken
two stories (the 1950 film is loosely based on the works of writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa) and
created a multifaceted masterpiece peppered with shifts and contrasts. He delves into aggression and
accountability to explore the collective Japanese consciousness after World War Two. He considers
the meaning of truth and the judging of others. In doing so, Kurosawa...show more content...
Kurosawa unsettles at the outset with rain and gloom, then employs a series of rapid cuts to draw
his viewer into the heart of the moral dilemma. His is a "radical experimentation" with narrative
marked by "dislocation and incompleteness" (Goodwin, page 114). Kurosawa himself wrote: "These
strange impulses of the human heart would be exposed through the use of an elaborately fashioned
play of light and dark" (Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography, p 182). It would be a
"keynote for the entire film" (Akira Kurosawa, Interviews, edited by Bert Cardullo, p. 176). That
keynote is struck as the woodcutter recalls the crime. Flashbacks were an unconventional way of
constructing a storyline, and Kurosawa's create a complex intertextual relationship. The woodcutter
strides into thicket, through full light, dappled light and shade, in an evolving montage of surety,
uncertainty and disquiet. The scene plays with long shots, pans, close ups and takes in high angles
and laterals. The segment is still analysed today for its technical and visual brilliance (Martinez, p
31). The shooting script for Rashomon was littered with directions to create a sense of motion, "to
pan, to dolly in and out," notes cinema expert Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa,
Donald Richie, pages 77, 78). It is here that Kurosawa and cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa break one
of cinematography's taboos – shooting directly into the sun. With craft

Honoring and Rebelling Cultural Traditions in "Rashomon" Honoring and rebelling cultural
traditions is a common theme in many Asian stories. "Rashomon" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa is one
of these stories. In "Rashomon", two characters, a man and an old woman, both rebel against their
cultural traditions and expectations. The story takes place at the RashoГёmon, the largest gate in
Kyoto. The author purposely uses Kyoto to create a distinct and important mood for the story. The
declining RashoГёmon became a place for unnamed corpses and a hide–out for thieves. At the
RashoГёmon, a man, recently fired from his job, goes to find a place to stay while he thinks
about becoming a thief. He then discovers an old woman pulling out the hair of dead corpses. The
man questions the old woman and completes his first job at his new occupation. He robs the old
woman and runs off, never to be seen again. The man and the old woman both decide to live
rebelliously, showing the author's views on living a rebellious life. The author incorporates Kyoto in
"Rashomon" to prove his perspective on living rebelliously. One of the two characters, an unnamed
man, helps define Ryunosuke Akutagawa's perspective on honoring and rebelling cultural traditions.

Rashomon Reflection
Rashomon, a black and white film released in Japan in 1950, was written and directed by Akira
Kurosawa. Rashomon portrays multiple retellings of a singular terrible story, the story of a rape and
murder.
The film begins with showing two men finding shelter from torrential rains in a completely
destroyed building. The woodcutter and priest are sitting in this destroyed building, that is labeled
with a sign that reads Rashomon. A new stranger takes shelter in the destroyed building, the
woodcutter speaks first, constantly repeating, "I don't understand. I just don't understand." The
curious new stranger asks what he doesn't understand, and that is when the retellings begin.
Both the woodcutter and the priest are deeply disturbed by the story they had heard; they had just
attended a court proceeding about the murder of a man, a samurai. The priest says that the story is
terrible and horrible, and that to hear it makes him begin to lose faith in humanity. He says that to
lose faith in the human spirit is worse than "everything." The film then shows the stories told at the
court; the bandit's story, the wife's story, the samurai's story–through a medium, and finally the
woodcutter's story.
Each story present's a slightly different perception of the story, and only the final story, the
woodcutter's story contains the whole truth. The woodcutter had stayed hidden throughout both the
rape of the wife and the murder of the samurai, and although he does not admit to this

rage. Upon realizing this she left the body, which was in a cleared area, and ran to drown herself
in a nearby pond but failed. She claimed that she was just a helpless woman, what else could she
possibly do Then the woodcutter comes forward and admits that he has seen the whole incident
from only a short distance away. He says that Takchiro calls his wife a whore and will notfight for
her but Musago says that she will belong to the winner so Tajomaru and Takchiro fight even though
they both know they are bad fighters and do not want to. In fact Takchiro is only fighting to defend
his life. As the story goes on the bandit wins and kills Takchiro in the thicket. The woman then runs
off and Tajomaru never caches her.
This was all the sworn testimony from the four eyewitnesses to the atrocious event, but which one is
right? I believe that none of the characters have an accurate description of what happened because
they have forgotten important details or they are making themselves look more honorable. I will
make an effort to re–write the story the way I think it happened, and then explain why each
interrogatory lied. Tajomaru was in the forest resting when he sites a beautiful girl and her husband
that pass by on an elegant hoarse. He thinks that he must have a taste of the girl so he will trick her
husband and tie him up.

Crows In The Rashomon
The crows are first mentioned at the beginning of Akutagawa's story, when he is describing the
city of Kyoto after its economic downturn. This was caused by a series of natural disasters which
left the city and the Rashomon in ruins. The Rashomon is a gate that is built as an entrance to
Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. The gate was a symbol of the power and prestige the city had
at the height of its rule. However, the gate is no longer taken care of after the crisis. It begins to
crumble along with the rest of the city. It is unkempt, with the varnish peeling and with weeds
growing out of the cracks. As well, it becomes a popular site to abandon unwanted corpses and
thieves use it as a gathering point. Instead of the beauty it once held,

Rashomon and it's significance in moral dialogue Akira Kurowasa's film, Rashomon, (released in
1951) is a remarkable detective/crime film which revolutionized the film making industry and won
many prestigious awards, and was said to the best foreign film out there. The scene took place in
the Ancient Japan. The story of murder talked and showed a Japanese woman who got raped, and
her husband getting killed in a sword fight. The Woodcutter who was one of the protagonists
claimed that he saw the testimony through his very own eyes. However, there are four distinctive
points of view, each telling their own side of the murder. Unfortunately, many of the Western movie
critics misunderstood the film, or just simply oversimplified its meaning. They believed the true
meaning of the story was the subjectivity of the truth, which is not what the story talked about but
rather it's about the quicksand of ego. The quicksand of ego is an important term since its one of
the many moral implications shown in Rashomon which ties nicely with philosophical topics as
well as moral dialogue itself. Rashomon effect which is defined as Kurosawa saying the film is not
about the truth, but the quicksand of ego, which Priest who was another main character refused to
accept. The true and pure meaning behind the Rashomon effect is that we cannot see the truth in
everything, because we as a society are questioning our true believes and goals in life. It is very
difficult to find truth, especially when

Rashomon And Blowup: A Study Of Truth Essay
Rashomon and Blowup: A Study of Truth
In a story, things are often not quite what they seem to be. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and
Michaelangelo Antonioni's Blow–Up are good examples of stories that are not what they first appear
to be. Through the medium of film, these stories unfold in different and exiting ways that give us
interesting arguments on the nature of truth and reality.
Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon tells the story of a murder. It flashes back to the event four times, each
time as told by a different person. The present–time section of the plot occurs at a gate under which
some characters take shelter from the rain. Three men can be found there – a woodcutter who
repeatedly proclaims his misunderstanding, a priest who says that...show more content...
He forces the woodcutter's story out of him. The woodcutter's version is perhaps the most
believable of all, and perhaps that's because it portrays everyone at their lowest common
denominator. Yet his story could also be completely fictional, as if he had merely combined various
parts from the previous tales. Perhaps by telling this lie and believing it, he is attempting to resolve
his confusion over the issue.
The woodcutter's rendition begins with Tajomaru trying to persuade the woman to go away with
him. She wants the men to fight for her, but the husband is disgusted with her and refuses. However,
the wife quickly turns her tears into laughter and attacks the men's pride until they reluctantly begin
their combat. The blundering sword fight that results contrasts sharply with the bravery and skill
Tajomaru described earlier. It's interesting that the earlier fight seemed perfectly plausible within the
framework of the story until the woodcutter's more realistic version makes it seem unlikely.
Rashomon plays with what we can perceive as truth. It paints a picture for us, and then tears it down
when presenting another possibility which is equally likely. The film leaves us with myriad
questions. What, here, is truth? Which tale, if any, is what truly happened? Do any of these stories
have any truth in them? The image of the crumbling, rotted

The Rashomon Effect
The various interpretations of the same event by different people in which contradict each other,
is known as the Rashomon effect. The phrase comes from the film Rashomon, and it is about a
murder and rape case. It also involves the different stories of each witness. Many times, when
something happens, people tend to share about the specific event based on what they hear or see.
In this case, point of view plays a great role. As far as the Rashomon film itself, there are many
cases in society ranging from minor ones to major ones which use the Rashomon effect. For
example, the Orenthal James Simpson (OJ) case. The case itself deals with a former football player,
O.J. Simpson who is charged with the murder of his ex–wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend
Ron Goldman. What I find both interesting and revealing, is the fact that each witness that testifies,
describes O.J.'s mode in a different way based on their perception of him. On July 10, 1995, the
murder trial of O.J. Simpson began with the testimony of his oldest daughter, 26, Arnelle Simpson.
Arnelle stated that her father was emotional, distraught, and out of control when he had heard of
Nicole Simpson's death. On June 12,...show more content...

What Is The Theme Of Rashomon
A 1950 japanese period drama film, Rashomon gives an insight to human motives and how as
humans lie as per their convenience. Directed by akira kurosawa the movie is based on two stories
namely 'rashomon' and 'in a grove' written by ryunosuke akutagawa.
The film opens with a thunderstorm with a woodcutter and a priest taking shelter under the
citygate named rashomon. A common man enters the scene to whom they narrate a disturbing
story of a murder which took place three days ago in the woods. The film goes in a flashback
where the woodcutter confesses when he is summoned by the court that he found a woman's hat , a

The wife of the samurai when found seeking shelter in a temple is summoned in the court. Her

The film Rashomon is highly regarded as an excellent film not only by the Japanese, but by
westerners as well. In the west it seems to be so highly regarded due to the questions it raises about
the concept of the truth. In this film the truth about the situation described seems to be very unclear,
as varying reports are given on the situation of a rape and a murder, with each person involved giving
a different story to what happened. In the end it seems to be left up to the viewer to decide what the

the first two acts, as the film climaxes with this surprising new information. Finally we reach the
conclusion of the film, in which we find out how the twist has affected the first two acts, and watch
as the characters deal with whatever new information they are confronted with. This method of
story telling does not necessarily give you a simple and definite resolution, but can allow for more
freedom of interpretation, not making a stance on how you are supposed to view the story, but
allowing each viewer to decide for themselves. Instead of just telling a story by setting up a conflict
and providing a definite conclusion to the conflict, this method can help you to think more deeply
about the story, forcing you to try and understand the conclusion for

Rashomon Essay

  • 1. Truth In Rashomon A kindred spirt of Mo Yan from the island of Japan, filmmaker Akira Kurosawa shares Mo Yan views on human nature. For these two men, humans have the capacity for great evil as well as great good. In Kurosawa's Rashomon, we see the fathomless depths humans will sink to, in order to preserve their own selfish desires. Throughout all three accounts of the samurai's death, we see how all the characters falsify the truth in order to serve their needs. From Tajomaru's grandiose fantasies of himself to the wife who shifts from sinful serpent to docile doe to lessen her involvement and finally the samurai who even in death refuses to tell the truth so that his honor as a great warrior and disciple to the bushido code will remain intact. Even the woodcutter Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Rashomon Conflict The title of the movie is Rashomon, and it was directed by Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa. Only one of the principle characters are named in the movie, this one character being a bandit by the name of Tajomaru. The other principle characters are only refered to as the woman, and the woman's husband. The movie's country of origin is Japan, and was released in the year 1950. 2. The main conflict lies within solving the mystery of what happened during the event in which the woman's husband is killed. The whole movie revolves around this conflict, and is only resolved at the end of the movie. There are other small conflicts in the movie, such as one that is related to the main conflict. This conflict involves the stories of the medium, the woman, and Tajomaru. This conflict lies in a group of people trying to figure out which story is the true one. 3. Though there are more than two main characters, the two that seem to be a bit more important to...show more content... It is Tajomaru's actions that lead to the whole event in the first place, as he is the one who attacks the woman and her husband, yet it is the woman's actions that play a large part in the event, as she causes her husband and Tajomaru to fight till the death. The only character who can even be considered the protagonist is the woodcutter, one of the characters who isn't seen on camera near as much as most other characters. Despite not even being an actual main character, he can be considered the protagonist due to his actions at the end of the movie. Despite having six children of his own, and little money, he takes in an abandoned baby, to raise it as his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Rashomon The film that was screened in class was titled the Rashomon and was directed by Akira Kurosawa. At the beginning of the film, it opens up on a priest and woodcutter sitting underneath a gate. A guy by the name of Kichijiro joins the priest and woodcutter and they begin discussing a murder that took place a few days ago. Then towards the middle of the film it transitions to four conflicting stories of what happened on the day of the murder. The first story is the wife of the samuri who died. The second story is the sumari story who died but tells his story through a medium. Finally, the last story was told by the woodcutter. In the end, all three stories were different, it stops raining and the woodcutter walks away with a baby left behind. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Censorship In Rashomon Rashomon (1950) is a film about a murder and the different testimonies of its eye witnesses. While seeking refuge from a violent rainstorm, a Priest, a woodcutter, and a man find themselves sharing the story of a recent murder. Both the Priest and the woodcutter testify in the trial of the murdered Samurai. Japan didn't leave WWII unharmed; the war wrecked many of the movie theater. Not only did this war hurt the film industry by destroying the places where they were showed, it also ushered an age of censorship. American occupation left Japanese Cinema restricted. The occupation destroyed and censored all films that portrayed feudalism in a good light. • 5. Narrative In Rashomon The Curious Case of Rashomon When a samurai is murdered and his wife is raped in the woods it is necessary for the courthouse to find the murderer and bring punishment upon him according to the law. Albeit this is seemingly a typical murderer solving case film it is the method of narration that makes the film differ from others. Rashomon is a famous Japanese film by Akira Kurosawa that tells a story of the same circumstance in four different versions according to the story teller. This particular type of narrative is so intriguing resulting for it to become its own effect. Not only is Rashomon famous for its narrative but also how it reflects and reveal many aspects about truth and lies. While it may not look like it, it can be seen that there are three main frames to this narrative. The big story or the main frame of narrative is at the gate of Rashomon where a woodcutter, a priest, and a commoner are discussing the samurai's murder cases. The woodcutter begins the film by telling the background and the general story about the cause of his confusion about the case. The second frame narrative is consists of the bandit's story, the wife's story, and the samurai's story told through a medium. In between each of the flashbacks the film returns to its main narrative of the film at the gate of Rashomon with the mean discussing each of the accounts. However, thinking about it closely it can also be said that the story the woodcutter is telling about the three suspects is...show more content... The woodcutter is the outsider; he has no doing or what so ever in the situation making his story to be the least bias. • 6. Examples Of Self Preservation In Rashomon In Akira Kurosawa's Japanese murder mystery film, Rashomon, Akira tells the story of a slaughtered samurai. The story of the murder is revealed four times to a judge, each by a different person who witnessed the crime. Each of the stories contradicts the previous. Each of the stories has a constant of rape, murder, and the use of a dagger as the murder weapon, but each story depicts differing methods and motives. The stories seem equally plausible and the film does not disclose which of the characters is telling the truth. Each of the characters has their own agenda and a reputation to protect. In this case, all four stories were fabricated to protect the characters' reputations. Especially in the era where this film takes place, reputation meant everything. All living things are susceptible...show more content... He claims to have tricked the samurai to step off the mountain trail with him and look at an arsenal of ancient swords he had found. He then ties the samurai to the tree and returns to capture the samurai's wife, giving the impression that Tajomaru is sly and shrewd. In Tajomaru's version of the story, he entices the woman making it seem as if the woman falls in love with him. This however, is contradicted by the other stories where it is said that Tajomaru forced himself onto the woman. Out of honor and respect, Tajomaru frees the samurai and they begin to duel for the woman's love. Tajomaru tells of a valorous and honorable sword battle that ensued between the two, whereas the story of the woodcutter states that the duel was clumsy and that Tajomaru took a cheap shot at the samurai, which ultimately ended his life. He tells this embellished, spectacular story of a damsel in distress, how he is to rescue her and they are to marry and live happily ever after together, to disguise his weakness of being repulsive and a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Rashomon Effect Essay I was not surprised why this film was considered as one of the greatest film ever produced. The movie was all about the witness of four people who gives a different story of a man's murdered and the rape of his wife. The greatness of the film makes the journalist to name an effect after it "Rashomon effect." Rashomon effect is said to occur when the same event is given a contradictory interpretation by a different individual involved. The account of the four witnesses in this film is summarized below: First witness (Tajomaru): The notorious bandit made a self–confession that he killed the murdered man himself after raping the wife. His story comprised of all the other three stories and he disclosed the truth the other three were hiding to cover themselves. For instance, Tajomaru refused to make mention that he begged the woman to marry her or she will kill her, the woman refused to mention that she insists one of the two men must die, the man refused to say he got into fight with Tajomaru but the fourth witness was able to tell every part of the story. 3. I believed the fourth witness was real because his story involved all three–people involved in the incidence. He saw the woman veil which was also mentioned by Tajomaru. The veil drop when Tajomaru was running with the woman. He saw Tajomaru kneeling and begging the woman to marry her and this was also said by the dead man. • 8. Gender Roles In Rashomon Rashomon (1950) is a film by Akira Kurosawa that deals with themes of truth, humanity, and morality. There are multiple approaches one could take to analyze this iconic film, this essay will focus on how each character performs their gender and how that affects how they are perceived by the other characters. While there are obviously many different personalities within each social class, these characters are primarily identified by their roles in society: the bandit, the husband, the wife, the commoner, the priest, and the woodcutter. These archetypes play out theirgender roles through both how they present themselves in their own tellings, as well as how they are utilized as characters in the film, in fascinating ways. The bandit and the samurai husband are both gendered as male, but they each perform one of two variants of it. The bandit is the concept is masculinity unchecked, with no laws or morals restraining him (exemplified by his primary identification as The Bandit), overwhelming and controlling. In every account he is forceful and violent, though his competency varies from story to story. This a man acting mostly on his basic instinct. In his own telling, he is significantly stronger and more capable than the others said that he was,...show more content... He is performing maleness, checked by his social class and lifestyle. This lack of emotion, or rather control of emotion, is juxtapositioned against the thief's constant angry outbursts, and the woman's tears. He was clearly very upset with his wife, however he was angry, not sad (a feminine reaction), yet has learned to not express emotion in order to perform masculinity in a more restrained way, as is expected even today of "higher class" people. • 9. Violence In The Movie Rashomon In contrast, the movie Rashomon has a more negative perspective represented of women. The main female lead in Rashomon is the wife of the Samurai/dead man. In the wife's recollection of events, she explained that she had been raped by the bandit, where after her husband looked at her with disgust and repulsion. This is a scenario that occurs too often in our present–day society. The rapist runs away after committing the crime (rape), leaving the victim in an attempt to lead a normal life. Often, the victim will feel dirty or unlovable, thinking their partner will no longer see them as the same. In Rashomon, after the incident, the Samurai is disgusted by his wife after she's been raped. This corresponds with the discriminating mindset that rape is the fault of the victim. Some say it's due to what you wear, or how you act that determines your fate (Sarmiento, 2011). In the movie, it was the women's fault because of her astonishing beauty. Today, the conversation of rape is still a very large social issue. However, from my personal perspective, the movie Rashomon seemed to discredit the seriousness of the situation. Rape is an action that cannot be wiped away from someone's memory, and will seriously affect its victim for (most likely) the rest of their lives (Sarmiento, 2011). In the movie, after the wife had been raped, she asked her husband to kill her, as she couldn't bear for him to look at her anymore. We must however, keep in mind the time period in which this movie was released, as well as the culture. In 1950's Japan, women had little authority/independence (Anan, 2012). Therefore, a movie such as this wouldn't receive as severe backlash. However, if it was released today, I believe that it would receive negative feedback due to its insensitivity towards the social issue of rape. In comparison, Spirited Away and Rashamon both have themes of women depicted throughout, however in very different methods. Spirited Away portrays women as strong, developing, independent female leads. Whereas Rashamon illustrates its female lead as weak, vulnerable and tragic. The theme of women and their portrayal in East Asian cinema is that of an unbalanced social issue/concern. What makes Spirited Away unique in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 11. Exploration Of Good And Evil In Rashomon On one level Rashomon, by director Akira Kurosawa, is a classic whodunnit, a tale of rape, murder, deceit and redemption. How was the samurai warrior killed and his wife violated in lonely woodlands at a time of dissonance in medieval Japan? Suspects emerge and an inquisition is held. But why do all players profess their guilt, rather than protest their innocence? Kurosawa has taken two stories (the 1950 film is loosely based on the works of writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa) and created a multifaceted masterpiece peppered with shifts and contrasts. He delves into aggression and accountability to explore the collective Japanese consciousness after World War Two. He considers the meaning of truth and the judging of others. In doing so, Kurosawa...show more content... Kurosawa unsettles at the outset with rain and gloom, then employs a series of rapid cuts to draw his viewer into the heart of the moral dilemma. His is a "radical experimentation" with narrative marked by "dislocation and incompleteness" (Goodwin, page 114). Kurosawa himself wrote: "These strange impulses of the human heart would be exposed through the use of an elaborately fashioned play of light and dark" (Akira Kurosawa, Something Like an Autobiography, p 182). It would be a "keynote for the entire film" (Akira Kurosawa, Interviews, edited by Bert Cardullo, p. 176). That keynote is struck as the woodcutter recalls the crime. Flashbacks were an unconventional way of constructing a storyline, and Kurosawa's create a complex intertextual relationship. The woodcutter strides into thicket, through full light, dappled light and shade, in an evolving montage of surety, uncertainty and disquiet. The scene plays with long shots, pans, close ups and takes in high angles and laterals. The segment is still analysed today for its technical and visual brilliance (Martinez, p 31). The shooting script for Rashomon was littered with directions to create a sense of motion, "to pan, to dolly in and out," notes cinema expert Donald Richie (The Films of Akira Kurosawa, Donald Richie, pages 77, 78). It is here that Kurosawa and cameraman Kazuo Miyagawa break one of cinematography's taboos – shooting directly into the sun. With craft Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Rashomon Essay Honoring and Rebelling Cultural Traditions in "Rashomon" Honoring and rebelling cultural traditions is a common theme in many Asian stories. "Rashomon" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa is one of these stories. In "Rashomon", two characters, a man and an old woman, both rebel against their cultural traditions and expectations. The story takes place at the RashoГёmon, the largest gate in Kyoto. The author purposely uses Kyoto to create a distinct and important mood for the story. The declining RashoГёmon became a place for unnamed corpses and a hide–out for thieves. At the RashoГёmon, a man, recently fired from his job, goes to find a place to stay while he thinks about becoming a thief. He then discovers an old woman pulling out the hair of dead corpses. The man questions the old woman and completes his first job at his new occupation. He robs the old woman and runs off, never to be seen again. The man and the old woman both decide to live rebelliously, showing the author's views on living a rebellious life. The author incorporates Kyoto in "Rashomon" to prove his perspective on living rebelliously. • 13. Rashomon Reflection Rashomon, a black and white film released in Japan in 1950, was written and directed by Akira Kurosawa. Rashomon portrays multiple retellings of a singular terrible story, the story of a rape and murder. The film begins with showing two men finding shelter from torrential rains in a completely destroyed building. The woodcutter and priest are sitting in this destroyed building, that is labeled with a sign that reads Rashomon. A new stranger takes shelter in the destroyed building, the woodcutter speaks first, constantly repeating, "I don't understand. I just don't understand." The curious new stranger asks what he doesn't understand, and that is when the retellings begin. Both the woodcutter and the priest are deeply disturbed by the story they had heard; they had just attended a court proceeding about the murder of a man, a samurai. The priest says that the story is terrible and horrible, and that to hear it makes him begin to lose faith in humanity. He says that to lose faith in the human spirit is worse than "everything." The film then shows the stories told at the court; the bandit's story, the wife's story, the samurai's story–through a medium, and finally the woodcutter's story. Each story present's a slightly different perception of the story, and only the final story, the woodcutter's story contains the whole truth. The woodcutter had stayed hidden throughout both the rape of the wife and the murder of the samurai, and although he does not admit to this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Essay on Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa "Rashomon" by Akira Kurosawa numerous characters display dissimilar testimony about a particular event and they all claim to have the story straight. To begin, a wood cutter who remains nameless is in the forest when he comes across a lady's hat, a gentlemen's hat, a piece of rope , an amulet case with red lining and finally a dead body in the thicket. Upon seeing all this he runs immediately to the police to report what he has found. The police do some investigating and find the man who they believed was to blame for the murder, lying on the beach next to a stolen white hoarse. The police bring him in to be question to find that he is the great bandit Tajomaru and that he was not thrown from his stolen hoarse as they had thought...show more content... When she awoke she found the dagger in his chest and assumed that she had killed him in a fit of rage. Upon realizing this she left the body, which was in a cleared area, and ran to drown herself in a nearby pond but failed. She claimed that she was just a helpless woman, what else could she possibly do Then the woodcutter comes forward and admits that he has seen the whole incident from only a short distance away. He says that Takchiro calls his wife a whore and will notfight for her but Musago says that she will belong to the winner so Tajomaru and Takchiro fight even though they both know they are bad fighters and do not want to. In fact Takchiro is only fighting to defend his life. As the story goes on the bandit wins and kills Takchiro in the thicket. The woman then runs off and Tajomaru never caches her. This was all the sworn testimony from the four eyewitnesses to the atrocious event, but which one is right? I believe that none of the characters have an accurate description of what happened because they have forgotten important details or they are making themselves look more honorable. I will make an effort to re–write the story the way I think it happened, and then explain why each interrogatory lied. Tajomaru was in the forest resting when he sites a beautiful girl and her husband that pass by on an elegant hoarse. He thinks that he must have a taste of the girl so he will trick her husband and tie him up. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Crows In The Rashomon The crows are first mentioned at the beginning of Akutagawa's story, when he is describing the city of Kyoto after its economic downturn. This was caused by a series of natural disasters which left the city and the Rashomon in ruins. The Rashomon is a gate that is built as an entrance to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan. The gate was a symbol of the power and prestige the city had at the height of its rule. However, the gate is no longer taken care of after the crisis. It begins to crumble along with the rest of the city. It is unkempt, with the varnish peeling and with weeds growing out of the cracks. As well, it becomes a popular site to abandon unwanted corpses and thieves use it as a gathering point. Instead of the beauty it once held, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Rashomon and it's significance in moral dialogue Akira Kurowasa's film, Rashomon, (released in 1951) is a remarkable detective/crime film which revolutionized the film making industry and won many prestigious awards, and was said to the best foreign film out there. The scene took place in the Ancient Japan. The story of murder talked and showed a Japanese woman who got raped, and her husband getting killed in a sword fight. The Woodcutter who was one of the protagonists claimed that he saw the testimony through his very own eyes. However, there are four distinctive points of view, each telling their own side of the murder. Unfortunately, many of the Western movie critics misunderstood the film, or just simply oversimplified its meaning. They believed the true meaning of the story was the subjectivity of the truth, which is not what the story talked about but rather it's about the quicksand of ego. The quicksand of ego is an important term since its one of the many moral implications shown in Rashomon which ties nicely with philosophical topics as well as moral dialogue itself. Rashomon effect which is defined as Kurosawa saying the film is not about the truth, but the quicksand of ego, which Priest who was another main character refused to accept. The true and pure meaning behind the Rashomon effect is that we cannot see the truth in everything, because we as a society are questioning our true believes and goals in life. It is very difficult to find truth, especially when Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Rashomon And Blowup: A Study Of Truth Essay Rashomon and Blowup: A Study of Truth In a story, things are often not quite what they seem to be. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and Michaelangelo Antonioni's Blow–Up are good examples of stories that are not what they first appear to be. Through the medium of film, these stories unfold in different and exiting ways that give us interesting arguments on the nature of truth and reality. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon tells the story of a murder. It flashes back to the event four times, each time as told by a different person. The present–time section of the plot occurs at a gate under which some characters take shelter from the rain. Three men can be found there – a woodcutter who repeatedly proclaims his misunderstanding, a priest who says that...show more content... He forces the woodcutter's story out of him. The woodcutter's version is perhaps the most believable of all, and perhaps that's because it portrays everyone at their lowest common denominator. Yet his story could also be completely fictional, as if he had merely combined various parts from the previous tales. Perhaps by telling this lie and believing it, he is attempting to resolve his confusion over the issue. The woodcutter's rendition begins with Tajomaru trying to persuade the woman to go away with him. She wants the men to fight for her, but the husband is disgusted with her and refuses. However, the wife quickly turns her tears into laughter and attacks the men's pride until they reluctantly begin their combat. The blundering sword fight that results contrasts sharply with the bravery and skill Tajomaru described earlier. It's interesting that the earlier fight seemed perfectly plausible within the framework of the story until the woodcutter's more realistic version makes it seem unlikely. Rashomon plays with what we can perceive as truth. It paints a picture for us, and then tears it down when presenting another possibility which is equally likely. The film leaves us with myriad questions. What, here, is truth? Which tale, if any, is what truly happened? Do any of these stories have any truth in them? The image of the crumbling, rotted Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. The Rashomon Effect The various interpretations of the same event by different people in which contradict each other, is known as the Rashomon effect. The phrase comes from the film Rashomon, and it is about a murder and rape case. It also involves the different stories of each witness. Many times, when something happens, people tend to share about the specific event based on what they hear or see. In this case, point of view plays a great role. As far as the Rashomon film itself, there are many cases in society ranging from minor ones to major ones which use the Rashomon effect. For example, the Orenthal James Simpson (OJ) case. The case itself deals with a former football player, O.J. Simpson who is charged with the murder of his ex–wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. What I find both interesting and revealing, is the fact that each witness that testifies, describes O.J.'s mode in a different way based on their perception of him. On July 10, 1995, the murder trial of O.J. Simpson began with the testimony of his oldest daughter, 26, Arnelle Simpson. Arnelle stated that her father was emotional, distraught, and out of control when he had heard of Nicole Simpson's death. On June 12,...show more content... According to Prosecutor Christopher Darden, Heidstra told his friend Patricia Barret, that he was able to hear both voices. One of which sounded like a young white man and one of an older black man, whom he believes to be O.J. How can that be? "You can't tell by someone's voice when they're black" Cochran stated. Anyone can have any kind of voice no matter what race they Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Tajomaru assaults the samurai's wife after which she tells him that either he must die or her husband because' for two men to have known her shame is worst that dying'. The wife of the samurai when found seeking shelter in a temple is summoned in the court. Her version of the story was way different from that of the samurai. • 21. Rashomon The film Rashomon is highly regarded as an excellent film not only by the Japanese, but by westerners as well. In the west it seems to be so highly regarded due to the questions it raises about the concept of the truth. In this film the truth about the situation described seems to be very unclear, as varying reports are given on the situation of a rape and a murder, with each person involved giving a different story to what happened. In the end it seems to be left up to the viewer to decide what the truth is, which raises some very interesting questions about whether there is one truth on the situation, or different truths for each person, and what this may mean to those trying to understand the film. Though these ideas are very interesting,...show more content... It is divided into four acts, which are: introduction, development, twist, and conclusion. In the introduction we meet the characters and learn about their story, and then the story develops and we learn more about the characters and the situations they may face. In the third act, a twist is introduced, and new and interesting information is learned, which may cause some contrast with the first two acts, as the film climaxes with this surprising new information. Finally we reach the conclusion of the film, in which we find out how the twist has affected the first two acts, and watch as the characters deal with whatever new information they are confronted with. This method of story telling does not necessarily give you a simple and definite resolution, but can allow for more freedom of interpretation, not making a stance on how you are supposed to view the story, but allowing each viewer to decide for themselves. Instead of just telling a story by setting up a conflict and providing a definite conclusion to the conflict, this method can help you to think more deeply about the story, forcing you to try and understand the conclusion for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
