Rank Order
Research Instrument
SET B –GROUP 3
What is it exactly?
RANK ORDER SURVEY QUESTIONS
 are close-ended questions that allow
respondents to evaluate multiple row
items based on a specific factor.
 a group of multiple-choice questions
questions presented in a single-
column format
 used in both pen and paper
questionnaires as well as online
surveys
What is it?
RANK ORDER SURVEY QUESTIONS
 offer accuracy of responses and
detailed insights
 ranking is by a simple ordinal
position where one variable or
option is higher than another
 ranking could also be by a
relative position where one
variable has a higher relative
rating than another and
subsequent ones.
Creating a Ranking Questionnaire
 Put the essential questions
 Keep it short and straightforward.
 Ask one question at a time.
 Avoid using jargon.
 Open-ended questions or closed-ended questions?
 Spend time to design your survey.
 Analyze the responses.
TIP! Try to limit the
number of ranking
choices to about 5.
Asking respondents
to rank too many
items in relation to
each other can be
overwhelming.
Advantages
 Ranking scales give you an insight into what matters to your
respondents.
 Each response to an item has an individual value, giving
results that you can easily average and rank numerically.
Disadvantages
 Ranking scales cannot tell you why something is important or
unimportant to respondents.
 Respondents cannot give the same rating to two items, even if
they are of equal importance to them.
 Survey results may suffer from "order bias”

Editor's Notes

  • #7 Ranking scales cannot tell you why something is important or unimportant to respondents. They address items in relation to each other rather than individually, and they may not give fully accurate results. Respondents cannot give the same rating to two items, even if they are of equal importance to them. There is no way to measure how much of a distance there is between levels of importance for each rating, even though this may be variable. Survey results may suffer from "order bias," where respondents rank the first set of items more positively than later ones. This may also be a problem if you ask respondents to rank too many items at once, because they may lose focus.
