8. The architecture of a classic
brand identity
In 1967 Randstad chose
to work with Total
Design and designer
Ben Bos. The brief: ‘to
create a brand identity
that encapsulated
professionalism, reliability
and accuracy’. Bos knew that ‘recruitment’ is an
abstract product with no defined ‘shape’. He also
knew that a simple shape could not be registered
as a trademark. The final result came from a classic
creative journey: weeks of rejected ideas before a
simple pencil sketch by Bos over coffee became
the origin of one of the world’s most recognisable
brand IDs. Bos discussed the result with colleagues
at the agency and decided it was the only design
he would present to Randstad. His confidence was
well placed: 47 years on, Mark Sinclair included
Randstad in his 2014 book TM, The Untold Story
Behind 29 Classic Logos.
