As Presentation Director at the Rocky Mountain
News, my daily role was to work with editors to
determine the focus and concept of page one. I
designed the front page each day and directed

artists, and was often asked to write the copy
                                     for page one, as well.

At the Rocky, the tab format lent itself to a

Live news coverage was a mainstay
of the Rocky. It was not unusual for
the paper to produce up to 30 live
pages of news in a matter of hours
for breaking news, elections or
sports championships.
On these nights, it was my job to
create a matrix of deadlines for
every task that needed to be done:
writing, editing, photo work flow,
page design and final typesetting.
In addition, I edited pictures
and sketched out concepts for
designers. Successfully managing
multiple priorities on deadline is
one of my specialities.

I handled the presentation of many projects at the Rocky, including “Final Salute. ” This was the story of a Colorado marine who
helped families deal with the grief of lost loved ones. The package won Pulitzer Prizes for the writing and photography.
I managed the design, editing and production of this project, and followed it through all the way to the printing plant to ensure the

                                                I directed two redesigns

Government and Municipal Meetings
Citizens benefit from captioning because they are able to fully
Redesign of a two-page flyer for local client
participate in their local government activities and they are well
informed. Often residents are better able to understand the
meeting because they can read and hear the words, especially if
English is their second language.

                               Corporate Meetings and Training
Employees benefit because of CART services from initial
training all the way through until retirement. Employees
are confident and productive when they are supported in
the workplace. On-demand remote CART and captioning
services allow employees the flexibility to join that last-
minute teleconference or to deal with any project
                               emergencies that may arise.

Educational Classroom
Students benefit from CART services by receiving all the
words and interactions taking place in the classroom.
CART services provided by Caption First are word-for-
word and should not be confused with other services that
are meaning-for-meaning. Students feel empowered to
fully participate because they are confident they are
receiving all of the information.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
Employees and students benefit from CART and captioning
services when English is a Second Language because reading
the realtime English text in conjunction with hearing the spoken
English aids in understanding and comprehension.

ESL citizens benefit from government’s use of CART and
captioning. The clarity provided by reading the words while
hearing the speaker fosters greater understanding which, in
turn, encourages inclusion and civic involvement.

            Frequently Asked Questions
 What is captioning?
Captioning is the merging of realtime text with an image,
such as a PowerPoint or a camera image. Common
examples of this are news and sports television programs.
Captioning is often used for conventions, seminars and
broadcasting municipal meetings over cable or the Internet.

                           What is CART?
CART stands for Communication Access Realtime Translation.
CART is a full screen of text. CART text is displayed on a
computer or large screen. CART text can be streamed
through the Internet or merged into a Webcast. Caption First
provides only word-for-word CART. Everything that is said is
                           captured.

 Who is Caption First?
Caption First has been providing realtime captioning and CART services nationally and
internationally since 1989 and is an industry leader in these areas of service. Our goal
is to provide equal access for everyone, breaking down communication barriers that
presently exist for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing as well as those with English
 as a Second Language.

 What is remote CART?
When the CART consumer and the CART provider are not located in the same place,
remote CART is the solution! The words are placed in a secure site which is accessible
to the consumer over the Internet. The consumer reads the words in real time.

 Where is remote CART used?
Remote CART is a perfect solution for global or local teleconferences. Corporate or
organizational work groups are often geographically dispersed and remote CART allows
an employee full participation. Remote CART is also a perfect solution for students,
 allowing unobtrusive classroom inclusion.

 How much does it cost?
Costs are paid by the company, government organization or school that is holding the
event that you want to attend. They are not paid for by individuals. The final cost is
dependent upon many items. We urge you to have the organization contact us for more
 information.

                                           Success is the GOAL!

                                      WORKSPACE DESIGN AND COLLABORATION

When the Rocky moved to a new building in 2006, I was tasked with designing the floor plan and arranging workstations to
maximize teamwork and collaboration. I worked with the publisher to place staffers in teams, and at the same time, place
related teams close to one another. I also helped to develop the concept of a central nerve center that managed both the
print and 24/7 online operation of the paper. Along the way, I designed the wall display (above) which highlighted the Rocky’s
three Pulitzer Prizes for Breaking News Photography.

After the Rocky closed in 2009, I started a side business selling nature photographs to galleries, publications and art lovers. I had been a photojournalist at the start of my
career and made nature photos in my spare time for many years. To support this new business, I created a photography blog which offered technical and artistic advice to
photographers. In addition, I created a Facebook fan page and Twitter feed to market my work. In 2011, I began writing articles on travel and photography for Examiner.com.
But I always knew I would return to design.

The package won Pulitzer Prizes for the writing and photography. I managed the design, editing and production of this project, and followed it through all the way to the printing plant to ensure the best possible color reproduction and printing quality for this 24-page special section.

For the first effort, we used market research to establish our core strengths and attributes. We turned these into a blueprint for redesigning the paper. I wrote the brand and style guidelines and trained the staff on their use.

  • 15. Randall K. Roberts WORKSPACE DESIGN AND COLLABORATION When the Rocky moved to a new building in 2006, I was tasked with designing the floor plan and arranging workstations to maximize teamwork and collaboration. I worked with the publisher to place staffers in teams, and at the same time, place related teams close to one another. I also helped to develop the concept of a central nerve center that managed both the print and 24/7 online operation of the paper. Along the way, I designed the wall display (above) which highlighted the Rocky’s three Pulitzer Prizes for Breaking News Photography.
  • 16. Randall K. Roberts WebSites, PHOTOGRAPHY After the Rocky closed in 2009, I started a side business selling nature photographs to galleries, publications and art lovers. I had been a photojournalist at the start of my career and made nature photos in my spare time for many years. To support this new business, I created a photography blog which offered technical and artistic advice to photographers. In addition, I created a Facebook fan page and Twitter feed to market my work. In 2011, I began writing articles on travel and photography for Examiner.com. But I always knew I would return to design.
