Rana Issa is a college student from Egypt, who is majoring in Agricultural Engineering. Since as
long as she can remember, she had a deep interest in food production and food sustainability. She
grew up in a poor household and could recall days where she barely had enough to eat. For her
summer vacation, she decided to travel to a small factory farm in Saudi Arabia to learn more
about livestock management. Once she arrived, a man named Rizwan Kassis greeted her and
showed her around the farm. They had many animals on the farm. Some were raised for their
meat, and others such a camels were raised to be used in labor and transport. Rizwan talked
about how he hated the way large livestock farms operated, how unsustainable those practices
were, and how much better his farm was. Rana learned a lot from Rizwan, but she was tired from
the day and asked Rizwan if they could rest for the night. She awoke in the middle of the night
and felt something biting at her leg. She looked down and saw that it was just a tick. Rana
grabbed her tweezers out of her backpack and carefully removed the tick. She cleansed the site
with some soap and water and then went back to sleep. The next few days, Rana learned more
about Rizwan’s farm and even helped out with the day to day task. On the third day, she was
feeling tired and started to have a slight fever. Her fever worsen in the night, and she experienced
vomiting and diarrhea. The next day she was rushed to the hospital because she was bleeding
out. Luckily she received treatment as soon as possible and made a speedy recovery.
Case Study Questions:
The doctors found that Rana suffered from a rare disease that emerged in Saudi Arabia. Based on
this information and Rana’s symptoms,
1 what disease did Rana get on her trip, and what pathogen causes this disease?2
2How was Rana infected with this disease?
3Describe the pathogen that is responsible for the disease.
4What are the vectors of this disease?
5How is this disease treated and are there any ways to prevent the disease?
Solution
1 what disease did Rana get on her trip, and what pathogen causes this disease?
The disease that Rana got on her trip might be; Rocky Mountain Fever caused by the bacterial
pathogen:
Rickettsia rickettsii.
2How was Rana infected with this disease?
By the bite of the vector: tick
3Describe the pathogen that is responsible for the disease.
Rickettsia rickettsii a small, aerobic gram-negativebacterium is an obligate, intracellular bacteria
ranging in size form 0.2x0.5 µm to 0.3x2.0µm.
4What are the vectors of this disease?
infected ticks are the vectors of this disease.
5How is this disease treated and are there any ways to prevent the disease?
The antibiotic Doxycycline can be used to treat this bacterial infection.
