This document summarizes a student project that aims to quantify the mental engagement of NYC subway riders. The project involves developing an app called RailSense that uses a brainwave sensor to monitor subway riders' mental states. The data would be analyzed and displayed on a web application to show real-time mental state results. The goals are to better understand how subway commute times impact riders' moods and well-being, and to help the Metropolitan Transit Authority enhance the subway experience. Some challenges include ensuring the accuracy of the brainwave sensors, developing a power source for all-day data collection, and gaining widespread adoption of the sensors and app by subway commuters.
