VISION STATEMENT
The Rady Jewish Community Centre aspires
to be a vibrant and welcoming community
where Jewish culture and values flourish,
where families and friendships are
strengthened, where healthy and active
lifestyles are encouraged and where we
contribute to the well-being of the entire
community by ensuring our programs and
services are available to all.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Rady Jewish Community Centre’s
mission is to be the centre of the
community providing the best in Jewish
culture, fitness and wellness programs
for all stages of life.
The pages enclosed within this
Program Guide outline the wide
range of fitness and cultural
programming available to you and
your family this spring!
The Rady JCC has worked hard to
revolutionize our fitness facility
for members, and coming this
spring, we’re excited to announce
we’ll be replacing a large portion
of outdated resistance training equipment with brand new Technogym
Olympic benches, plate loaded machines and functional machines.
Your experience at the Rady JCC is important to us. We want to ensure you
feel welcome every time you are here and that we are not only meeting
your expectations but exceeding them. We hope our programming in
all areas lives up to our vision of creating a vibrant community, where
Jewish culture and values flourish, where families and friendships are
strengthened and where active lifestyles are encouraged. Please do not
hesitate to contact us if you have any ideas that will help us realize our
vision. We are here to serve and help build the community.
On behalf of everyone at the Rady JCC – our staff, volunteers,
Board of Directors – we wish you all the best.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to seeing you
at the Rady JCC. Wishing you joy at Passover and throughout the year!

Kaufman Child Care
Centre at the Rady JCC
Providing care for 113 children, our centre strives to give
children a balanced program that is specifically tailored to
the individual child. Every day experiences are infused with
Jewish traditions and values.
Outstanding Early Childhood Educator: Madhu Sharma
Madhu is the team leader of our infant room. She plans activities to foster the
development of fine and gross motor skills and foster language skills. Madhu main
goal is to help the children build positive and respectful relationships by providing
a safe and developmentally appropriately environment where all children’s needs
are met. Madhu offers children different play-based opportunities to explore their
environment through their senses such as making honey cake with the children for
Rosh Hashanah. This stimulates their sense of smell, taste and touch as well
as helps provide a foundation for their Jewish culture.

The Outrageous Sophie Tucker
The rags to riches story of Sophie Tucker, an iconic superstar who ruled the worlds of
vaudeville, Broadway, radio, television, and Hollywood throughout the 20th century.
Before Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe, and Mae West,
Sophie Tucker was the first woman to infatuate her audiences with a bold, bawdy
and brassy style unlike any other. Using all of “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” 400-
plus recently rediscovered personal scrapbooks, authors Susan and Lloyd Ecker take
you on their seven-year journey retracing Tucker’s sixty-year career in show business
(USA, 2014)
Mr. Kaplan
Jacob Kaplan lives an ordinary life in Uruguay. Like many of his other Jewish friends,
Jacob fled Europe for South America because of World War II. But now turning
76, he’s become rather grumpy, fed up with his community and his family’s lack
of interest in its own heritage. One beach bar may, however, provide him with an
unexpected opportunity to achieve greatness and recover his family’s respect in the
community: its owner, a quiet, elderly German, raises Mr. Kaplan suspicion of being a
runaway Nazi. Ignoring his family’s concerns about his health, Jacob secretly recruits
Contreras, a more loyal than honest former police officer, to help him investigate.
Together, they will try to repeat the historic capture of Adolf Eichmann: by unmasking
and kidnapping the German and secretly taking him to Israel. (Uruguay, Spain,
Germany, 2014)
Official Entry, Best Foreign Language Film, 87th Academy Awards Uruguay, Spain, Germany, 2014
24 Days
French director Alexandre Arcady delivers one of the most “wrenching and politically
astute” films to come out of France (Screen Daily). Based on a book co-written
by Ilan’s mother, Ruth Halimi, Arcady’s cinematic adaptation offers a searing
insight into his vicious ordeal, the violent world of the gang of Barbarians, and
the harrowing experience of his family waiting and hoping the police would save
their son. For 24 days the police, insistent upon handling the case as a normal for-
ransom kidnapping, fail to recognize the anti-Semitic hatred of his abductors. Many
opportunities to save Ilan are missed or squandered as his family receives nearly
700 phone calls, insults, threats, photographs and sound recordings of their tortured
son. (France, 2014)

The Maslowsky Family’s Yiddishe Concert
First there were The Barry Sisters, then the Jacksons and in Winnipeg; it was the Maslowskys.
One of the great musical families of the fabled North End reunites on stage for Mameloshen 2015.
Debbie and Jerry Maslowsky bring alive their special take on Yiddish hits from their decades long
repertoire. Jerry has performed for over 50 years at various Jewish functions throughout the city
including recently Chai’s 50th anniversary reunion. He spent 18 years with the Sarah Sommer Chai
Folk Ensemble as a singer dancer and MC. Debbie began performing with the Chai Folk Ensemble
and later as a professional actor with Rainbow Stage, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre and the Manitoba
Theatre Centre, most recently in their production of Cabaret. She has also been featured in film
and television and has taught and coached musical theatre students.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 7:30 P.M.
Mir Trogn A Gezang - We Carry a Song
A Tribute to Chana Mlokek z”l by her son Zalmen Mlotek and Her Grandchildren
The legacy of the brilliant and beloved Yiddish music anthologist and scholar Chana Mlotek z”l,
who passed away in November 2013, is expressed movingly and eloquently in a musical tribute
performed by her son, renowned Yiddish concert artist Zalmen Mlotek, and her grandchildren.
The many volumes of Yiddish songs she compiled and published have served as the inspiration
for many who joined the international revival of Klezmer and Yiddish music, and have offered a
rich window into the musical treasures left to us by Eastern European Jewry. In this concert the
grandchildren explain and contextualize the musical gems that Chana unearthed, and perform
them with heart and soul. They are the newest link of the Goldene Keyt - the golden chain of
Yiddish cultural continuity.
MONDAY, JUNE 29, 7:30 P.M.
Theresa Tova and Matt Herskowitz
The Yiddish Diva is Coming to Winnipeg with an Evening of Yiddish Song.
Theresa Tova and virtuoso composer/ pianist Matt Herskowitz combine Tova’s love of Yiddish
(her mameloshn) with Matt’s unique approach to classical music. A sultry voiced singer who has
embraced Yiddish song, together they have modernized it and incorporated it into classy and
emotionally heartfelt concerts. Tova tours the world as a ‘Yiddish Diva”. Her three CD’s Telling
Stories, Tova Live at the Top O’ The Senator and You Ask Me Why Tova Sings Beyle, have won rave
reviews. Matt Herskowitz has carved out a unique and personal voice in music. Over the course
of the last decade, Matt has produced a series of critically-acclaimed recordings, premiered his
works in settings from New York’s Central Park to Germany’s Köln Philharmonic, collaborated with
top classical, jazz and pop artists, and has performed at music festivals across the globe.

Yoga. YY is stress management for kids. Yoga Yeladim will be

reduce pain and increase mobility.

Before Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe, and Mae West, Sophie Tucker was the first woman to infatuate her audiences with a bold, bawdy and brassy style unlike any other. Using all of “The Last of the Red Hot Mamas” 400- plus recently rediscovered personal scrapbooks, authors Susan and Lloyd Ecker take you on their seven-year journey retracing Tucker’s sixty-year career in show business (USA, 2014) Mr. Kaplan Jacob Kaplan lives an ordinary life in Uruguay. Like many of his other Jewish friends, Jacob fled Europe for South America because of World War II. But now turning 76, he’s become rather grumpy, fed up with his community and his family’s lack of interest in its own heritage. One beach bar may, however, provide him with an unexpected opportunity to achieve greatness and recover his family’s respect in the community: its owner, a quiet, elderly German, raises Mr. Kaplan suspicion of being a runaway Nazi. Ignoring his family’s concerns about his health, Jacob secretly recruits Contreras, a more loyal than honest former police officer, to help him investigate. Together, they will try to repeat the historic capture of Adolf Eichmann: by unmasking and kidnapping the German and secretly taking him to Israel. (Uruguay, Spain, Germany, 2014) Official Entry, Best Foreign Language Film, 87th Academy Awards Uruguay, Spain, Germany, 2014 24 Days French director Alexandre Arcady delivers one of the most “wrenching and politically astute” films to come out of France (Screen Daily). Based on a book co-written by Ilan’s mother, Ruth Halimi, Arcady’s cinematic adaptation offers a searing insight into his vicious ordeal, the violent world of the gang of Barbarians, and the harrowing experience of his family waiting and hoping the police would save their son. For 24 days the police, insistent upon handling the case as a normal for- ransom kidnapping, fail to recognize the anti-Semitic hatred of his abductors. Many opportunities to save Ilan are missed or squandered as his family receives nearly 700 phone calls, insults, threats, photographs and sound recordings of their tortured son. The Maslowsky Family’s Yiddishe Concert First there were The Barry Sisters, then the Jacksons and in Winnipeg; it was the Maslowskys. One of the great musical families of the fabled North End reunites on stage for Mameloshen 2015. Debbie and Jerry Maslowsky bring alive their special take on Yiddish hits from their decades long repertoire. Jerry has performed for over 50 years at various Jewish functions throughout the city including recently Chai’s 50th anniversary reunion. He spent 18 years with the Sarah Sommer Chai Folk Ensemble as a singer dancer and MC. Debbie began performing with the Chai Folk Ensemble and later as a professional actor with Rainbow Stage, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre and the Manitoba Theatre Centre, most recently in their production of Cabaret. She has also been featured in film and television and has taught and coached musical theatre students. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 7:30 P.M. Mir Trogn A Gezang - We Carry a Song A Tribute to Chana Mlokek z”l by her son Zalmen Mlotek and Her Grandchildren The legacy of the brilliant and beloved Yiddish music anthologist and scholar Chana Mlotek z”l, who passed away in November 2013, is expressed movingly and eloquently in a musical tribute performed by her son, renowned Yiddish concert artist Zalmen Mlotek, and her grandchildren. The many volumes of Yiddish songs she compiled and published have served as the inspiration for many who joined the international revival of Klezmer and Yiddish music, and have offered a rich window into the musical treasures left to us by Eastern European Jewry. In this concert the grandchildren explain and contextualize the musical gems that Chana unearthed, and perform them with heart and soul. They are the newest link of the Goldene Keyt - the golden chain of Yiddish cultural continuity. MONDAY, JUNE 29, 7:30 P.M. Theresa Tova and Matt Herskowitz The Yiddish Diva is Coming to Winnipeg with an Evening of Yiddish Song. Theresa Tova and virtuoso composer/ pianist Matt Herskowitz combine Tova’s love of Yiddish (her mameloshn) with Matt’s unique approach to classical music. A sultry voiced singer who has embraced Yiddish song, together they have modernized it and incorporated it into classy and emotionally heartfelt concerts. Tova tours the world as a ‘Yiddish Diva”. Her three CD’s Telling Stories, Tova Live at the Top O’ The Senator and You Ask Me Why Tova Sings Beyle, have won rave reviews. Matt Herskowitz has carved out a unique and personal voice in music. Over the course of the last decade, Matt has produced a series of critically-acclaimed recordings, premiered his works in settings from New York’s Central Park to Germany’s Köln Philharmonic, collaborated with top classical, jazz and pop artists, and has performed at music festivals across the globe.
