Origins Early radio could not transmit sound or speech– it was just a “wireless telegraph” Radio began as communication between armies and navies during war Then moved on to mixture of comedy, drama, news, music, soap operas, and sports By 1950s, radio was more like it is today: music, talk, news, and sports
Satellite Radio Became successful due to deployment of in-car receivers Satellite radio changed AM/FM radio Has millions of subscribers Moved a lot of listeners from AM/FM radio to satellite After Howard Stern moved to satellite radio in 2006, many radio stations lost a lot of listeners Ratings went down markedly for stations that formerly broadcasted his show Only exception was Seattle’s KISW
BJ Shea Morning Experience Morning radio show on 99.9 FM Took over for Howard Stern’s slot Have kept ratings the same despite the move to satellite Use a lot of tools to communicate with fans
