RADIO SARANG
INTRO…
India is a country which has 18 officially recognised languages and a total of 1652
mother tongues in a country.
Given its diversity and the expanse, one could understand the problems that local
communities or minority cultures face in getting their voices heard.
As far as radio is concerned, call it by any name ; community radio, rural radio etc. its
proponents feel that radio holds the key that will unite India’s linguistic and ethnic
diversity.
WHAT ARE COMMUNITY RADIOS ??
Created and controlled by a community or communities.
Community radio stations reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests.
WHAT IS RADIO SARANG ?
Established on September 2009 , by Dr Richard Rego SJ .
Radio Sarang has been managed by the Mangalore Jesuit Education Society
(MJES) till the present day.
It is run by the St. Aloysius college, Mangalore.
“Sarang ‘, means “harmony of colours.”
It signifies various social, religious, linguistic communities and their peaceful
coexistence at coastal Karnataka.
WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT ?
Radio Sarang involves the participation of various local communities to promote their
local culture, which is fast disappearing amidst urban chaos.
Being a campus based radio, it encourages the participation of various local
communities for their day to day broadcasting than being an educational institution
based radio.
The 24x7 radio, broadcasts programs produced by and for the local communities or
by health and legal workers for communities
The radio broadcasts in Konkani, Kannada, Tulu, English, Beary, Punjabi and Hindi
languages on a weekly basis.
In 2010-To light up the spark of patriotism in people, Community radio SARANG
107.8FM, came up with an idea of 14 hours non-stop Radio Jockey marathon by RJ
Sudeep Shenoy. It was held on Sunday, the 15th of August from 6.30 am to 8.30pm.
“Community radio Sarang has a sincere way about it – realtime- live” says Dr Richard
Rego in one of his articles. According to him Most of the private commercial radios pre-
record the “live” and are not real time live. He also added that the radio provides a
platform for the communities to showcase their talents in innumerable ways. He adds
that “They can voice their problems, suggestions and can comment on any kind of
information pertaining to their communities. We here at St. Aloysius College try to give
them a platform and a big stage to help the community so that their voices can also be
heard in far-off places. We do not see what the community does to our community, but
we see to it that we help the communities as much as possible. This is the goal of Radio
Sarang.”
“Community Radio Sarang 107.8 , run by St. Aloysius College ,
Mangalore ,embodies the spirit of “for and by “ the people by
disseminating information which has touched and enriched lives”
