Radio waves are used to transmit signals from mobile phones to the nearest base station. Base stations receive incoming signals and send them to the main telephone network. Each base station can handle around 100 to 150 separate signals at once, so multiple base stations are needed to support a large population. Mobile phones use radio waves to communicate with base stations, which transmit signals at different frequencies than they were received at.
