Scrum Tackle & Maul
Research
By Andrew Clements
Proposal
Scum Tackle and Maul is my idea for creating a Radio Broadcast. As the title
suggests the broadcast will evolve around the sport of Rugby. My main idea
is to decode and understand the European scandal which is the Heineken
Cup, as well as giving a general overview of each type of rugby. League,
Union and sevens. My Broadcast will follow a similar structure and format of
Fighting Talk on BBC 5 Live. It will answer, debate and discuses your
questions to get to the bottom of each Question.
Primary, Quantitative Research

The surveys show 75% of people
that I surveyed are aged around 18
and are a student or
un-employed and 50% Male
This shows that I have a young
audience base. As the
stereotypical gender for Rugby is
usually male, in my questionnaires
I received 50% male and 50%
female. This would then further
increase my audience base due to
both genders being attracted.

100 % of all the results
collected that said they watch
Rugby, watches Rugby Union.
For the broadcast it means I
have to focus on topics and
news for Union. This means I
only need to report major
stories with the other Rugby
categories.
Primary, Quantitative Research
Six out of the ten people surveyed said that
the cap of £4 million on Rugby player salaries
isn’t fair. this will introduce converse to the
broadcast and start a debate. If I get two
strongly opinionated people it will attract the
audience from shows like Any Question on
Radio 4.

75% of people have watch at least
one rugby match, and 10% have a
season ticket to a club. This means I
have a divest audience in the way of
the knowledge of the game and how
it is played.
Primary Qualitative Research
Face to face interviews were conducted in order to
gain information more freely. May.T(2002-pp123)
Social Research “semi structured interviews are
said to allow people to answer more on their own
terms than the standardized interview permits”.
This suggests how these type of interviews let
individuals answer more on their own free terms
rather than feeling like they are being forced out of
them.

70% of people interviewed that are
interested the Heineken cup. have said the
Heineken cup is going to eliminated in
2014 . As they have shown an interest in
the Heineken cup it shows they would be
interested in my radio factual as it is the
main topic of debate so my listening figures
would be wider due to this.

One response to the
question says “if they stick
to the current systemeventually the tournament
will collapse.”
Secondary Quantitative
Research

The results in the tables back up my finding that
rugby union rules are complicated and a good
discussion point, as 60% have a good
understanding and 40% with less than average, the
results also show there is a higher majority of males
which are interested in the sport .

June12-13
averaged 470,000
subscriptions with
a 4.2% increase in
sales
82% of
subscribers are
Male with 60%
35+ this suggests
my audience base
would be male
Secondary Quantitative
Research

Rugby tonight on
BT Sport averages
34 thousand views
per program
Aviva Premiership
Rugby on BT sport
Average of 101
thousand

Rajar statics show that in the radio
industry the BBC own more than 50%
of the shares and of that Radio 5 Live
has 3.70% of the listening audience
about 2 million listeners. This shows
their will be an existing audience as it’s
a sports channel
Secondary Qualitative
Research and France are
Only the top six clubs in England
guaranteed a place in the Heineken Cup, whereas at least
10 Pro12 outfits - including both Scottish teams, Italian
teams and a minimum of
three sides each from Wales and Ireland –have automatic
entry into the competition. No matter where they place. This
ruling is what has sparked Premier Rugby Limited to create
the new European cup. As the Pro 12 is a European cup
already which selects the best from each country's
premiership its unfair as no matter where they place in the
premiership they are entered.
Premiership Rugby and its French counterpart Ligue
Nationale de Rugby have announced a new European
tournament. Rugby Championship Cup. “the competition will
be based on merit and qualification, and equality between the
leagues”.
McQeen & Knussen says “qualitative research approaches explores and
describes, explains and predicts” McQeen is saying qualitative data, text
base research can be shown to describe a persons opinion and can be
written in the form of interviews as well as articles
Conclusion
In conclusion I will feature highly on the news and scores of Rugby Union as
100% surveyed watch or had an interest in the game, with both a detailed and
basic analysis of rules and regulations to cater for a large scope of audience
ages . I will ask the Question is Rugby an old fashioned game with 60% of
Rugby worlds magazine subscribers being over 35.Why the Rugby
Championship has been created? And what could the Heineken cup do to
resolve the problem.
It needs to be know the Rugby Championship isn’t trying to eradicate the
Heineken Cup but compete with it, asking clubs on their own teams if they
want to join. With the RFU (England)and now the WRU (Wales) backing the
new tournament how long with the Heineken cup last?
Finally I will explain the rules regulations and running of the sport at both club
and International level.
