From a Barista
to a Resident Assistant
One constant theme of being a Resident Assistant here at the
Towers at CCNY, I would say, is someone’s ability to adapt and
assimilate to a fast paced changing environment. I was hired as
an alternate R.A. back in May of 2015 and accepted other oppor-
tunities at that time. I participated in becoming a founder of a
none-profit organization called Beyond Z from April to May of
2015. It’s an organization dedicated on accelerating unpriviledged
college kids and to make sure they have all the resources they
need in order to stand out and graduate. After that I branched off
and used my leadership skills to test by becoming a Barista and
eventually into a Shift Supervisor for Starbucks from June 2015 to
October 2015.
I am confident to say that if I had not taken the time to build
on my experiences and skills during the duartion that I was not
hired as an R.A., there is a probability that I would not have
gotten to be the leader that I am in the present. I strongly be-
lieve in maximizing our own adaptation and growth potential. I
have used the time that I had outside the Towers to focus on my
strengths and weaknesses to be a stronger person.
After getting accepted to be a full time Resident Assistant last
October, I quickly adapted into the lifestyle of what being an RA
demands.
With no expectations and prior training, I
jumped right in and I loved it!

November 2015 9th Floor Board
To intoduce myself to the 9th floor residents,
I used my first Bulletin Board as a collage of
things I am passionate with to connect with my
residents An Asset to the Towers
I believe I have strongly affected the Staff community of the Tow-
ers with the artisitc aesthetic I continously persisted. Whether it’s
a program or a physical thing I am tasked to do, I have done them
with a twist of what I am passionate with. As a Digital Design
student and a freelance photographer, I have created a mentali-
ty of combining my passion for the career I am pursuing and my
passion of leading residents and students into a motivated path.
As a result, I have done a good amount of unique contributions
to the Towers as a Resident Assistant. The following pages con-
tain some of the work I have done while fulfilling my position.
Spring 2016 Door Decorations
For the Spring Semester, I have decorated the Residents’ and the Staff’s names into a
graffiti typeface to go along with the board I have made for January and February.
RA Training Spring Photoshoot
I have used my skills with Photogra-
phy to bond with the RAs and do work
at the same time. During programs
and Staff events, I usually am desig-
nated as the photographer.

For the required series of events
that RAs are required to plan for
the spring semester, The Towers
Museum Series is an ongoing series
of trips outside the towers for resi-
dents to explore unique museums
residents usually have not gone
to. Last February, I brought fellow
RAs and residents to the Whitney

ern limited collection they have
worked for.

THE
TOWERS
This March, I am taking the residents to the Coo-
per Hewitt Museum at the Upper East Side free
of charge. To conclude the series, on April, I am
planning on bringing the residents to Smorgas-
burg, a food festival in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
COOPER
HEWITT
During the transition period of the promotion of former
9th Floor RA Kahtan Al Jammali into Senior RA, I hosted
my very first community program. I introduced myself to
all my residents by knocking on their doors while serving
coffee. From then on, I have hosted a diverse pool of pro-
grams alone and some in collaboration with fellow RAs.
Programs like the Cake Pop Making and Holiday Jeopardy
were planned mainly for socializing according to their
time period. The Sex Talk was a great program for resi-
dents to be more informed with our generation’s views and
myths on Sex in general. The Pajama Party was in collabo-
ration with all the RAs as a welcome week program for the
Spring Semester. The Ramen Social is an ongoing series
community builder for residents to appreciate the sarcastic
gourmet pleasure of eating plain ramen.

December 2015 Bulletin Board
For the December Bulletin Board, I wanted residents to be
better informed with their Caffeine knowledge. Finals week lies
in the middle of December and I thought a resource of differ-
ent caffeinated drinks, cafes, and basic facts would motivate
residents to be better motivated for the upcoming exams. This
board also went along my December 2015 Community Builder
of giving coffee to all my residents.
January 2015 - February 2016 Bulletin Board
For the Bulletin Board in the Winter, I have collect-
ed a series of album covers that contain songs protrud-
ing on the theme of love for Valentine’s Day. The ti-
tle All You Need is Love is derived from the famous
Beatles song. Furthermore, I have also made a collage
of different ways how to say love in different languages.

February 2016 Laundry Board
For this month’s Laundry Board I have drawn, with
a marker, all things people can see in New York
City. I have made everything in Black and White
and with a marker for residents to be drawn into the
center and to see the different things I have com-
bined to form something abstract with NYC.

RA Marketing Assistant
Besides all the regular monthly requirements an RA does
to interact with their residents (programs, boards, etc.),
We are also assigned a functional assignment throughout
the academic year. I was finally tasked during the Spring
semester to be the RA Marketing Assistant. This job is
centered around assisting Assitant Director of Residence
Life Meera Cuevas on different tasks. The majority of
the job surrounds making flyers, logos and templates
depending on what is assigned. I was selected due to my
background of pursuing a career in Graphic Design and

FYREThe First Year Residential Experience is a program focused
on accelerating Freshman residents on maximizing their
leadership potential for a more motivated path for the rest
of their college career. I had informed ADRL Meera that I
would like to be more involved since it’s very similar to the
none-profit I was in, Beyond Z. The ADRL had tasked me to
redesign the logo for the program as my first task as a Mar-
keting Assistant.
I wanted the new logo to be very similar to the actual Towers
logo. I combined a silhouette of a dragon with a flame palette
to promote the “inner fire” the program is attempting to light
from the first year residents.

MEET YOUR NEW RHA BOARD!

semester with excitement, President

are thrilled to represent the residents of the
Towers and let their voices be heard!

THE NEW TEMPLATE for
THE NEWSLETTER
Another part of being the RA Marketing Assistant is designing a new template for
the Newsletter, the functional assignment assigned to fellow RAs Vanessa Bedoya and
Shabnam Sanli. I created the template from scratch with the program Adobe Indesign
(the same program used for this portfolio). I wanted to incorporate the Towers color
palette throughout the newsletter for a more uniform feeling that its originated from
the Towers. On the back, is a sleeker and cleaner look for residents to better view the
information that is printed on it.

A DISTINCT EYEWhatever the prompt or the task is at hand, I always make sure that I use my own perspec-
tive and compromise appropriately with my fellow RAs, Staff members, and Residents.
The Towers Staff Board 2016
This current project involves photographing the members of
the Staff with a Polaroid Camera. The purpose of the vintage
Polaroid theme is to have a more casual, relatable and decora-
tive look from residents’ point of view. As an addition, I will
be decorating the board with fake vintage lights and wire to tie
the overall polaroid theme.
The February 2016 RA Seminar Board
was assisted with my creative direc-
tion. I suggested the use of the type
around the pictures and the way the
pictures are collaged together.
Each staff member gets one big
polaroid picture with another small
one either alone or with another
staff member.
A TEAM MEMBERWorking as a Resident Assistant requires a good amount of collaborations. I
have worked with multiple RAs from programs to Bulletin Boards. I believe
that my working ethic and skills blend well with the group dynamic.
EVERY JOB
COMES WITH
A LITTLE BIT OF
ADMINISTRATION
Administrative tasks are critical parts
of the position as an RA. The tasks
range from duty logs immediately
after a shift is finsihed to a weekly
report. Each task, I have done with a
critical eye. Throughout all my tasks,
I have made sure to put an exception-
al amount of detail to make sure that
everything is properly documented.

  • 6. A DISTINCT EYEWhatever the prompt or the task is at hand, I always make sure that I use my own perspec- tive and compromise appropriately with my fellow RAs, Staff members, and Residents. The Towers Staff Board 2016 This current project involves photographing the members of the Staff with a Polaroid Camera. The purpose of the vintage Polaroid theme is to have a more casual, relatable and decora- tive look from residents’ point of view. As an addition, I will be decorating the board with fake vintage lights and wire to tie the overall polaroid theme. The February 2016 RA Seminar Board was assisted with my creative direc- tion. I suggested the use of the type around the pictures and the way the pictures are collaged together. Each staff member gets one big polaroid picture with another small one either alone or with another staff member. A TEAM MEMBERWorking as a Resident Assistant requires a good amount of collaborations. I have worked with multiple RAs from programs to Bulletin Boards. I believe that my working ethic and skills blend well with the group dynamic.
