2. The audience for my media product
would be primarily aimed towards
young women between the ages of
16-25. This is due to the fact that
young people can relate and feel the
effect of fears and what triggers
them when watching such films.
Also, as one of the main characters
Darcie is of this age, the audience
can feel the film from her perspective
allowing a connection to be formed
between audience and character.

3. Angel Café is quite an old style noir thriller in the opening
scene, which generally would appeal to a more mature
audience, being an adult sub-genre. However, the
opening is simply a flashback similarly to Kill Bill 1, with
the opening scene of the bride and Bill. This is a film
which our target audience would also enjoy, as it’s the
same narrative structure and has a similar main character
of a deviant woman.
Darcie’s characteristics are also what makes the film
appeal to a young audience as she is deviant and
dishonest, but also come across helpless. Due to the fact
our target audience is between 16-25 they would be able
to relate to Darcie’s behaviour as teenagers generally go
through a ‘rebellion’ stage, allowing them to relate to
Darcie’s persona and become hooked to the film.

4. Another thing that young people relate well to are phobias
and fears. The fears explored within Angel Café are
claustrophobia (when Darcie’s locked in the freezer) the idea
of being stalked – which is generally a strong fear that many
people can relate too. This is important as using common
fears allows the audience to feel what the characters feel and
relate to the film, becoming hooked. There is also the fear of
being found out or caught, which can be seen when Darcie is
taking money from the till; this is a fear that everybody has at
some point which makes it very easy to relate too. Lastly,
there’s the theme and idea of idealism which is contradicted
to the point of the theme being hopelessness, Darcie for
example – a hard working girl but she still has to steal. A
more complex theme and fear to feel.

5. There is also the fact of class. Darcie is a
working class person, making our
audience generally working class. This is
because not only of Darcie but location.
The café is quite dated and is somewhere
that generally working class people afford
to eat at, and isn’t a high class restaurant.
The audience must be able to relate and
connote to the location, therefore
making the target audience working class
females from the ages of 16-25.

6. Our target audience would enjoy other thriller films such
as Animal Kingdom and The Girl with the dragon tattoo.
Both are modern contemporary films. Animal Kingdom is
in first person narrative, J, is the same age as Darcie, and
is from a working class background, allowing the
audience from Angel Café to be able to relate to J as well,
likened to Angel Café; Animal Kingdom has a complex in
depth plot that requires the audience’s attention. The
Girl with the dragon tattoo’s main character Lisbeth, is a
similar character to Darcie. Both are posed as femme
fatales but are simply deviant strong women, again
allowing the audience to relate towards both characters.
This is subtly shown in Darcie from when she takes the
money out of the till, and the way she is expressionless
throughout the opening, giving her a mysterious almost
enigma sense.
