I think that two different social groups have been shown in my product, an older and more well
off generation and a younger and a more poor generation. I think that the characters have shown
these two different generations though different ways.
• The different ways I think the characters show their generations are:
• Costumes
• Dialect
• Body Language
• Camera Angles
The costumes that the characters wear, I think make them fit into their social groups as well as
the actors general appearance. The appearance of the actors gives off a clear representation of
their age which already shows off part of their social group. Man 1 is older so his appearance in
general shows that is part of the older generation and he belongs to an older social group,
however his clothes, such as the shirt, trousers and shoes show that he is also in a more successful
social group, this is also shown through is personality as he is torturing Man 2 and as he is more
successful he sees himself as being superior. Man 2 is younger than Man 1 so this shows he is from
a younger generation, his clothes are a normal T-shirt, normal trousers, cheap trainers and a
hooded jumper, this shows that he is not successful but he is average, this makes him look lower
than Man 1 as he clearly doesn’t have as much money. Man 2 is shown through his costume that
he is part of a younger slightly poorer social group, I think that the actor’s general appearances
and their costumes are a clear representation of this.
I think the Man 1’s dialect shows his social group as well. This also shows the characters
personality Man 1 speaks clearly and confidently, as he is successful and he acts like he knows it.
Man 1 looks down on Man 2 as he is more successful than him and this gives him his power over
Man 2, this also shows a bit more of his motivation. Man 1’s dialect is a key part of showing his
social groups as he speaks in full words and doesn’t use slang. This shows off his social group as
the older generation don’t use slang but a more successful social group is less likely to use slang,
so by making him speak properly I feel like I have been able to show off his social group. I can’t
use dialect for Man 2 that much as he doesn’t speak, however his silence shows his social group in
comparison as by social standards Man 1 is superior as he is more successful and Man 2’s social
groups lower status is shown through his silence towards Man 1.
I think that both of the characters body language helps to show their social groups. Man 1keeps a
straight posture and is more aggressive towards Man 2, this helps to show his social group and
status as Man 1’s social group is considered to be superior. Man 2 is restrained to a chair and
doesn’t look up at Man 1, this shows his social group and how it is considered to be lower than
Man 1’s, it also shows his lack of confidence as he thinks he isn’t as good as Man 1 due to being in
that social group.
The camera angles don’t show the characters social groups, however they do show which
character comes from the stronger social group. The camera angles help to back up everything
else that shows Man 1 is from the stronger social group, this is shown through his and low angle,
Man 1 puts his hand on Man 2’s shoulder as he does this the camera angle is looking up at him,
this shows his power over Man 2. Similar to this the camera looks down on Man 2 as Man 1 grabs
his shoulder and punches him, this shows his lower social group and status as well as his lack of
power over the situation he’s in.
