Hermann was an officer in the Russian army who never gambled but watched other officers. Tomsky told a story about his grandmother, an elderly Countess, who was told the secret to winning cards by the mysterious Count of St. Germain. Hermann became obsessed with learning the secret and started courting the Countess' ward, Lizaveta, to gain access to the Countess. When he confronted the Countess, she died of shock without revealing the secret. Hermann then fled with Lizaveta's help but she realized his intentions were motivated by greed. At the Countess' funeral, Hermann saw her mysteriously open her eyes in her coffin. Later, her ghost appeared and revealed the secret
