Qube Architecture is an international design studio with offices in Hong Kong and New Zealand. QUBE CAPABILITY STATEMENT (Rev B 21.03.2011)
1.0 INTRODUCTION QUBE ARCHITECTURE IS A COLLOBORATIVE PRACTICE THAT BELIEVES THAT A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT OUTCOME IS ABOUT SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE TEAM FROM ITS DIVERSE RANGE OF TALENTED & MOTIVATED PROFESIONALS TO SUIT THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE PROJECT.
1.1 QUBE BACKGROUND AN INTERNATIONAL STUDIO WITH THREE DIVISIONS Qube Architecture is an International Design Studio with offices in both Hong Kong and New Zealand. Qube was founded in New Zealand and was expanded into Hong Kong in 2009. Qube is split into three divisions; Architectural projects in New Zealand managed by Managing Director Vaughan Bayley and large scale architectural projects in Hong Kong & Asia managed by Principal Director Sean Pinfold. Interior Design projects covering Hong Kong, Asia and New Zealand managed by Principal Director Elizabeth Reid. SIGNIFICANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE The principals at Qube have significant project experience in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Middle East and the UK having been senior members of well known architectural practices such as; Foster & Partners, RMJM, Leigh & Orange, Aedas and Woods Bagot. This background allows the practice to tackle a wide range of projects from residential to commercial & hospitality through to large scale infra structure and master planning, Airports & Transportation centres. Qube Architecture is working in collaboration with architectural, interior and landscape companies with vast experience in China & Asia projects.
1.1 QUBE BACKGROUND COLLABORATION & SUSTAINABILITY The Studio believes in a collaborative approach from the outset of any design to ensure that a holistic outcome is generated. Qube is currently working on a large infrastructure design competition in Hong Kong with some of the worlds most talented consultancies. In tandem with this Qube places a strong emphasis on sustainable design solutions for ALL projects, which are firmly linked to careful cost analysis allowing our projects to be value for money solutions SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF AWARDS FOR NEW ZEALAND RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS The studio has received a significant number of awards for their residential projects, generating many repeat clients. We aim to attract creative and innovative talent from around the world by introducing a strongly design based studio environment, and by sharing profits with the team in a collaborative manner. 2.0 OUR DESIGN APPROACH
2.1 A COLLABORATIVE STUDIO PEOPLE & PROCESS. The core team disciplines are as follows; Qube fundamentally believes that a great project is the result of gathering the right group of motivated and talented professionals together specifically to serve the ‘needs’ of the DESIGN project. To this end Qube is constantly searching for new collaborators to extend its capability to serve the diverse rage of project types that it wishes to tackle. Our mindset is that “the sum of the parts is greater than the parts”. TECHNOLOGY The other benefit of this collaboration is the ability to upsize and downsize to suit the prevailing economic situation and hence project types to allow us to select the ‘right team’ for a specific project. SUSTAINABILITY Qube believes that good design is the result of a bottom up process. This process is two fold: First to establish the specific ‘needs’ (clients desires, project brief) of the project and secondly to follow its ‘bio diverse’ manifesto. The outcome of this process will be a design solution that is truly fit for purpose and ultimately does more with less. Each project FAÇADE where possible to be zero carbon. Qube starts each project with the same core team disciplines in place which it feels are LANDSCAPE fundamental to creating a firm base for the development of the project.

2.1 THE DESIGN TEAM DESIGN The Design Team has been gathered from a diverse group of talented professionals. The key that links the team together is the desire to produce architecture that comes from a collaborative, bottom up and bio diverse process. A ‘bottom up’ process is one that respects the core needs of the project first. This allows the architecture to be evolved from the project needs , not a stylistic whim. The Design Team is as follows; SEAN PINFOLD Principal at Qube, worked for Leigh & Orange and Woods Bagot prior to setting up Qube KRISTOF CROLLA Collaborator with Qube. Kristof has worked with Zaha Hadid and is now assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong and founded the architecture practice LEAD (Laboratory for Explorative Architecture and Design) DYLAN BAKER-RICE Director and Lead Designer of Affect_t in London, but based in Hong Kong, with experience in interiors, furniture and family residences VAUGHAN BAILEY Managing Director at Qube New Zealand, worked in South Africa, London and New Zealand ELIZABETH REID Principal at Qube, worked for RMJM, Aedas and Venetian prior to setting up Qube. Elizabeth heads up the Interiors team MURRAY BORLAND Collaborator with Qube New Zealand. Murray has 30 years of experience working on a diverse range of projects ALEX WONG Collaborator with Qube. Alex worked with RMJM with a vast experience from working in Sydney, Australia.
2.1 THE TECHNOLOGY TEAM THE APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT THE PROCESS The utilization of Advanced Technology plays an integral supporting role in the Qube Design Process. We strive to implement the latest technological methods and measures towards ensuring that maximum efficiency and effectiveness is maintained and ensured throughout the process. The technology team is split into two parts. The first is form finding, the second is the application of the BIM process Form finding is provided by Roberto Davolio. Roberto has collaborated with Qube since 1995 on a wide variety of projects. Roberto is a talented designer who has chosen to direct his passion toward defining the optimum form for a given design by the application of specific logarithmic logics. He then develops this form to ensure that it is fully optimized and give the maximum possibility for rationalization The application of the BIM process is provided by Martin Riese. Martin is a long time collaborator with Qube team members starting back in 1992 whilst working on the new airport terminal building at Chek Lap Kok for Sir Norman Foster & Partners. ROBERTO DAVOLIO Subsequent to working with Eric Owen Moss & Sir Norman Foster & Partners Roberto set up his own company Form & Structure. Refer to section 4.2 for his capability statement MARTIN RIESE Martin Riese - Martin is a founding partner of the integrated consultancy practice Front and currently manages the firm’s Asian operations. His prior architectural experience includes global work with premier firms including Santiago Calatrava, Foster and Partners and Frank Gehry.
2.1 THE SUSTAINABILITY TEAM THE NEED FOR A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN SOLUTION Sustainable design is provided by David Littler. David is currently collaborating with Qube on a transport infrastructure competition. David’s approach is to work closely with the architect and wider design team to achieve building designs (massing, orientation, shading etc.) which inherently require less resource use through an appreciation of local climatic conditions, supported by computer simulation and analysis. The integration of low energy building services systems and renewable technologies complete the strategy. Sustainable engineering is provided by Rob May. Rob is currently also collaborating with Qube on the transport infrastructure competition. Rob is skilled in the use of specialist computer software which allows structural design solutions to be refined and optimised in close collaboration with the architecture to not only minimise material use, but to also produce elegant solutions. Each project where possible to be zero carbon. DAVID LITTLER David leads the Building Services (MEP) and Sustainable Engineering discipline in the Asia Pacific region for Buro Happold and is based in the Hong Kong office. He has been fortunate to work on projects with other design team members who value engineering input at an early stage, and as a result has often been able to influence the form and fabric of a proposed building to enhance the design. This is particularly the case with low energy design projects. Refer to Section 4.2 for his capability statement. ROB MAY Rob has gained vast experience working in a number of Buro Happold offices around the world including the UK, North America and currently in the Asia Pacific region based in Hong Kong. He has vast experience of using AutoCAD, Revit, Robot, and other specialist software, and is a Buro Happold leader in the optimisation of structural solutions to minimise material use. He has more recently been heavily involved in a practice wide programme to maximise the potential uses for Building Information Modelling technologies. Refer to Section 4.2 for his capability statement.
2.1 THE BUILDING ENVELOPE TEAM MARTIN RIESE AND FRONT www.frontinc.com Established in 2002, Front is an integrated design and building consultancy practice with offices in New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong. Front is a cross-disciplinary group of 40 creative individuals with professional backgrounds in architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, energy management and project management. Front has proven expertise in specialized architectural façade systems, energy analysis and building information modelling (BIM) driven project design, coordination and delivery. Front’s portfolio of work ranges in size and complexity and includes large-scale high-rise residential towers, hotels and offices, public and cultural institutions, additions to historically sensitive sites, as well as custom designed work for private residences and artists. Front offers value-driven services to building project team configurations of all types, and works collaboratively to design unique and bespoke buildings and structures. Drawing upon Front’s first-hand experience with the successful execution of numerous original and challenging architectural projects and specialist knowledge of the global construction industry, Front can assist in the following ways; architectural design, engineering, energy analysis, project delivery, evaluation of qualified bidders, advice on procurement methods, constructability of systems, value engineering options, and how best to meet the project schedule and budget. Front engages fully with stakeholders and project partners in an intensive, open-minded design process to realize innovative, creative and practical projects worldwide.
2.2 A BIO SPECIFIC APPROACH QUBE’S BIO SPECIFIC MANIFESTO Qube considers that the term sustainability has now got stigmas attached to it that do not fully reflect its true desire , therefore we prefer to use the term Bio Diverse Building Solutions. With a world population that continues to expand the need for us to create building solutions that use less materials & energy is paramount if we are not to exceed to what provisions the planet can offer us. Simply put a bio diverse building solution is one that works with its context and not against it. The following is a summary of the key elements of the manifesto. 1. Context: The objective is to fully understand the specific site context of the building, establishing the limitations of the climate & geography, existing vernacular building approaches and materials & energy sources 2. Optimization of brief: The objective is to question the brief to ensure that the optimum solution is produced, a solution that reduces building area and surface area and hence materials usage to a minimum 3. Optimization of Consumables: The objective by understanding context & producing a minimum footprint is to reduce the consumption of consumables to a minimum 4. Optimization of engineering: The objective is to create a structural solution that results in the lightest building possible, hence reducing materials usage to a minimum 5. BIM: The use of BIM will produce savings in construction cost and the abortive use of materials by its ability to ensure the co ordination of the specific team discipline 6. Zero carbon buildings A Bio diverse building solution will use LESS ENERGY, LESS MATERIALS & will COST LESS
2.2 A BIO DIVERSE APPROACH THIS PROJECT IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE BENEFITS THAT THE BIO DIVERSE APPROACH PRODUCES Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong – Boundary Crossing Facilities Competition Transportation flow optimization - Most efficient use of space; - No reversing required by driver (safer); - Easy queuing for passengers; - Easy loading/unloading of luggage Orientation Sustainability - 2030 Building Design Standard. 60% reduction in Carbon Emissions when built by 2015 - 50% less energy than BEAM Energy Target - Water - Low Thermal Transfer building form OTTV<10W/m2 - Green Roof to reduce building loads and heat island effect - Efficient AC – Activated slab with displacement vent air conditioning - Sea water cooling plant - On site renewable energy – Ocean Current Power, Solar PV and Solar Hot Water - External shading & breezes promoted to provide outdoor comfort - LED external lighting powered by PV cells during the day “Value for money” solution Lowering building heights & footprints, preference of offsite fabrication (steel-concrete) & benefits in site safety, selection of localized materials as much as possible, low VOC materials, no hardwoods. OPEX and whole life cost management systems have also been considered. The overall project budget figure is approximately HK$7.5B. The total paved/landscape area inc. roads totals about 123ha costing about HK$2.6bn.
2.3 BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING THE BACKGROUND & BENEFITS OF BIM Building Information Modelling (BIM) seeks to record, manage and progress all information about a building project in a single, internet-based 3 dimensional data base, which is available at all times to all project stakeholders, partners and collaborators. Following are the key benefits of managing building projects in this way. • The cost and programme penalties of inadequate 3 dimensional coordination are reduced. • The speed and accuracy of quantity, cost and risk management are improved. • Clash-free 2 dimensional drawings are produced automatically from the 3 dimensional BIM process. The resulting clarity of design and construction information reduces “Requests For Information” (RFIs) during project delivery. • The 3 dimensional BIM elements can be linked to directly to the supply chain thereby streamline in fabrication and delivery. • The 3 dimensional BIM elements can be used to simulate – and optimize - the delivery sequence, thereby reducing time and risk in the delivery. • The overall increase in coordination and clarity of project information reduces the traditional cost and time penalties associated with 2 dimensional information management processes. • It is widely accepted that BIM-driven projects cost at least 10% less than projects delivered using traditional 2 dimensional processes.
2.3 BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING B.I.M A WORKING EXAMPLE Qube’s BIM services are headed up by Martin Riese and Front. Martin is a licenced architect with 25 years of experience in design and construction. Martin Riese was the Managing Director of Gehry Technologies (GT) in Asia. 2.4 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE ADRIAN NORMAN AND ALN Adrian L. Norman Limited opened in Hong Kong in 2005 with its sister company Adrian L. Norman Sdn. Bhd. opening in Malaysia in 2010. The company is a collaboration of design professionals committed to the continuing pursuit of the highest quality service to clients based on a clear understanding of the relationships between the environment, built form and open space. This expertise has developed over the last 17 years with projects throughout the Asian region including: South East Asia; China; India and The Middle East. The companies design philosophy comes from a belief in the creation of exceptional places through integrated design solutions. These include: the fusion of landscape and architecture; respect for environmental, sustainable and ecological processes; and the design of strong memorable spaces, appropriate to time, place, and culture. Our work spans from large scale master planning, technology campus projects, hospitality, commercial residential and parks, urban design infrastructure to private residential commissions.
3.0 QUBE ARCHITECTURAL & INTERIOR PROJECTS
3.1 VILLAS IN THE SKY VILLAS IN THE SKY VTS is a 12 storey residential tower situated on a 900m2 beach front site located in the heart of Juhu beach Mumbai, India. The desire of the client was to have his own “Villa in the Sky" incorporating guest floors below. By introducing a central recreation area including gardens, pool and gym facilities, gave privacy between the residence and the guest floors whilst also giving the main residence the impression of floating in the air. The residence also included an observation garden providing its very own outdoor living area.

3.2 BORDER CROSSING FACILITY COMPETITION BORDER CROSSING FACILITY This international design competition required the provision of a new border crossing facility located to the East of the existing Chek Lap Kok airport on a new land platform. The facility serves to link Shenzhen & Macau to Hong Kong via a new bridge and tunnel structure. Qube collaborated with nine different disciplines on this project, the outcome is a building that performs 50% above LEED Platinum. The project was shortlisted by the competition review team. Qube continues to work with many of the collaborators on this project.
3.2 BORDER CROSSING FACILITY COMPETITION
3.3 RECREATION & SPORTS FACILITIES This project required the provision of a recreation and sports facilities with a main clubhouse, hard standing boat storage and launching facilities. The basis of the design of the clubhouse was to produce a building that captured the prevailing winds and used them to cool the conditioned areas of the building for 4 months a year and also to provide passive cooling to the viewing deck. The start point of building form is inspired by the hull form of the recent Americas Cup catamarans. This form was then developed using CFD wind analysis to optimize the flow of air into its interior & also to produce a minimum surface area solution. The building structure uses a monocoque approach, which means that the overall building weight is significantly less than a comparable structural solution. The monocoque solution was also chosen to suit the site context which has gas rig platform fabrication facilities near by that can be used to fabricate the frame & skin.
3.3 RECREATION & SPORTS FACILITIES SPORTS FACILITY This project required the provision of recreation and sports facilities with a main clubhouse, hard standing boat storage and launching facilities. 3.3 RECREATION & SPORTS FACILITIES
3.4 MIXED USE COMPLEX MIXED USE COMPLEX This mixed – use building containing two floors of offices and residential apartments on top floor is located on a 990m2 inner city site . As the building is located in a residential zone (now re- zoned as commercial), the objective was to ensure the building design was in keeping with existing residential surroundings. A Natural ventilated basement provides ample car parking for the two levels of offices and the two top apartments. Each apartment is equipped with green balconies that creates big outdoor area thereby increasing indoor outdoor flow.
3.5 MIXED USE COMPLEX MIXED USE COMPLEX Mixed use office and retail building located on a 11,000m2 site in Vietnam. With street access on four sides allows separate entries to both towers and the main retail shopping complex, as well as a service entrance to the rear of the building, therefore reducing traffic congestion on site. Food and beverage is located on the podium roof top and opens up onto a public green garden area that also links up to an indoor cinema complex part of the shopping centre. The podium garden level also acts as link between the two office towers, allowing separate pedestrian crossing without interfering with the retail patrons.
3.6 HOSPITALITY BAR & RESTAURANT This project is located in a boutique hotel as the main bar and restaurant, to serve the hotel guests, tourists and local neighbours. Currently, this well founded enclave was situated in the heart of the city, with an opposite design of ice, crystal and sparkle. This design was an image from the original founder, bringing the outdoors to indoor, natural finishes and colour palettes, bold Scandinavian fabric patterns, and a flowing timber slatted ceiling. The project comprised of using sustainable and recyclable products, energy saving lighting, etc, allowing at least 40% of the construction fitout to be a possible icon for future bio diverse projects.
3.7 COMMERCIAL VETERINARY CENTRE This project is a newly refurbishment of an existing veterinary centre located in a more prominent premise. The reception, consultation rooms, surgery and wet room are on ground floor at street level, with access to a cock loft accommodating offices and storage. The general colour palette was simple and clean, using the logo electric blue, brilliant red and off white. The built in cabinetry for all rooms were to be long lasting, robust, therefore hairline stainless steel was used. The reception counter is a one off design using corian to create a curve in the reception counter end, flowing down to the seating bench within the waiting area. The centre is well known, popular, with a fit out life time of 12 to 15 years.
3.8 RESIDENTIAL DUPLEX HOUSE This project is a beautiful two storey old village house in the countryside. With 3 meter high ceilings, it allows the open kitchen on the ground floor to create a grand and powerful, yet inviting, dining and eating experience. The island counter seats eight comfortably, allowing the guests to relate with the owners whilst engaged in the food preparation for the evening. The upper level has a large master bedroom with en- suite bathroom and walk in wardrobe area, a study and a guest bedroom, all with Burmese teak timber flooring and built in cabinetry.
4.0 COLLABORATION TEAM EXPERIENCE & CAPABILITY
4.1 DESIGN TEAM SEAN PINFOLD Sean graduated Unitec School of Architecture in New Zealand in 2000 and joined City Design, Auckland, New Zealand where he spent 18 months as an Architectural Designer. Sean left City Design to establish a private practice in Cambridge, New Zealand focusing on Residential and Commercial projects. In 2007 Sean accepted a position with Leigh and Orange, Hong Kong and subsequently joined Woods Bagot. Sean gained extensive experience in the Middle East and Asia on large scale, multi storey commercial projects. Sean returned to New Zealand in early 2009 to establish the New Zealand and Hong Kong office of Qube Architecture Ltd. By combining his years of private practice in New Zealand with the knowledge gained in Hong Kong of large scale commercial projects Sean has built a winning formula that enables Qube Architecture to deliver exceptional projects.
4.1 DESIGN TEAM KRISTOF CROLLA Kristof is a licensed architect who combines his work as Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong with his Antwerp-Hong Kong based architectural practice “Laboratory for Explorative Architecture & Design” (LEAD). Up until recently he worked in London as Lead Architect for Zaha Hadid Architects while teaching in parallel at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London (AA) and other institutions worldwide. (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) After graduating Magna Cum Laude at Ghent University and practicing in Belgium, he moved to London in 2005 and attended the AA’s master program Design Research Laboratory, from where his student work with team “Sugar Inc” was exhibited at the 2006 Venice Architectural Biennale. He is the founder of the International Workshop Series (IWS) which organize workshops worldwide exploring digital design and fabrication in architecture, and has been invited as a jury critic, lecturer and tutor in numerous institutions in Europe, China, Chile and South Africa. 4.1 DESIGN TEAM DYLAN BAKER-RICE Dylan is director and co-founder of the architectural practice Affect_t with offices in London and Hong Kong. Working on large-scale buildings and competitions alongside smaller scale experimental projects has allowed for a unique insight into new methods of manufacturing utilizing computer driven design. Graduating Summa Cum Laude with University Honours from Appalachian State University, Dylan studied Construction Technology and Sustainable (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) (Designed by Affect_t) Development. His professional practice began at Chris Benedict RA with multi- storey low-income housing in New York, specializing in the incorporation of green technologies and building sytsems. After earning his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University, Dylan began practice first for Asymptote Architecture in New York and then later for Zaha Hadid Architects in London before co-founding Affect_t. Currently, Dylan is teaching as a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong and acts as a visiting critic at the Architectural Association in London, and Pratt and Columbia University in New York. 4.1 DESIGN TEAM VAUGHAN BAYLEY Vaughan graduated from Port Elizabeth University in South Africa in 1987 with a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. He then he worked for 7 years in South Africa for practices on various residential, retail and commercial schemes developing his design, 3D visualization and technical skills before moving to London in 1994. In London, after a couple of short contract jobs, he joined M.R Partnership where he worked for the next 14 years and was (Whilst working for MR Partnership) (Whilst working for MR Partnership) involved in wide variety of schemes working as Assistant Architect on small and large jobs including the redevelopment of two city blocks of Covent Garden with hotels, office blocks, restaurants, cafes, residential. Vaughan also developed and then managed the IT infrastructure of the M.R Partnership office. In July 2008 Vaughan left M.R Partnership and emigrated to New Zealand where he did contract work in both Architecture and IT until being invited to join the Qube Architecture team as New Zealand MD in January 2010. 4.1 DESIGN TEAM ELIZABETH REID Elizabeth has worked in Hong Kong and around Asia since 1993. Working in both large and small scale companies has widened Elizabeth’s experience with management and design. Elizabeth’s involvement in all projects consists of liaison with the Client, building energetic teams for up and coming companies, feasibility evaluation, design development, contract documentation, and contract administration. (Whilst working with Aedas) (Whilst working with Aedas) Elizabeth’s role in RMJM was Director of the interior design team for projects in Hong Kong and Asia, leading a strong fifteen person team, with skills ranging from designers, CAD technicians, FF&E and project managers. Elizabeth worked in Macau as an Executive Design Manager for the Venetian Cotai Strip. The responsibilities were for creating Interior Design and FF&E Design Managerial Teams for Parcels 3 and 7&8 on the Cotai Strip, for design direction, coordination and follow through of the interior design fit out of all interior casino spaces. 4.1 DESIGN TEAM MURRAY BORLAND Murray has practiced Architecture for over 30 years in private practices as a Senior Partner or a sole Practitioner. Graduating in the early seventies Murray worked for a number of years in Bromley Kent in the UK, Belgium, Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong for the same Architects, during which time he extended his qualifications in Interior Design, and qualified initially with the British Institute of Interior Designers and later the Chartered Society of Designers in the UK. Returning to New Zealand Murray launched his own Private Practice and establishing two additional offices. As a Director and a specialist in the field of Polynesian and Ethnic Architecture he also brings a huge and diverse knowledge base to the practice, Murray has huge personal and professional humanitarian Architectural development interests especially in providing ecosystem and environmentally sustainable Architecture to benefit undeveloped areas.
4.1 DESIGN TEAM ALEX WONG Alex’s designs are characterised by a mixture of simplicity, timeless elements and spatial functionality. With this, he formed his own interior design company in Hong Kong. From this, he has implemented his design philosophy into recent projects in Asia and his experience now covers varied sectors from residential, hotel and leisure and commercial. With a strong collaboration with QUBE Architecture, the design team is capable (Whilst working with RMJM) (Whilst working with RMJM) of producing high quality projects. Alex’s personal involvement in his previous company, RMJM, consists of initial briefing meeting with client, feasibility evaluation, schematic design, design development, contract documentation, and contract administration. Alex’s recent works includes large scale restaurants and bars, Saraya residential complex, Parcel 7&8 of the Cotai Strip, Macau, China Merchants Bank Headquarters, Shanghai, Huawei Nanjing R&D Complex, Huawei Conference Centre, Nan Fung Dvmt . 4.1 DESIGN TEAM DEBORA MARZOCCHI Debora obtained her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan). She began her practice during her studies collaborating with University Professors and Professionals. Since June 2007 she started to specialize her design skills in the high-end retail business, working for an important Italian studio. She followed the project development of the boutiques from the (Whilst working with DGA) (Whilst working with DGA) layout, to the grand-opening, assisting the clients on every phase of the project and coordinating local architects and consultants with the furniture suppliers. She has been collaborating as an active and leading member of several design teams and had the opportunity to work for Italian Luxury Brands such as MaxMara and Canali. In 2009, Debora founded M2A Design Ltd, an Interior Design firm in Hong Kong. M2A is a retail, corporate and residential oriented practice with a global design action operating in Italy, Mexico, Hong Kong and China.
4.2 TECHNOLOGY ROBERTO DAVOLIO Form and Structure consulting services was founded by Roberto Davolio, an Italian born Architect specializing in building systems who has worked for Foster and Partners as part of the Specialist Modeling Group. In past working experience Roberto was employed as project designer for ASI, a design-build company based in Los Angeles. His experience covers the field of design, fabrication and installation of a variety of building structures including tensile systems and fabric structures. The development of close working relationships with American, Asian and European fabricators, has produced an experience and understanding in the design of standard curtain wall and cavity wall systems. Invaluable expertise on past high profile projects include the Beijing International Airport, the AOL Time Warner Center in New York, the Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas and the Grand Rapids Convention Center in Michigan.
4.2 TECHNOLOGY MARTIN RIESE Martin Riese is a licensed Architect with 25 years of international experience in professional practice. He is a partner in the renowned integrated building industry practice called Front, which provides technology-enabled design and construction consultancy services worldwide. Martin is a Visiting Professor in the School of the Built Environment at Salford University and is a professional member of the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM). Martin has worked with Santiago Calatrava and Foster and Partners. He was the regional Managing Director of Gehry Technologies, where he oversaw numerous large-scale Building Information Modelling projects in Asia and throughout the world. Martin publishes and lectures regularly on the subject of “Construction Industry Transformation”. As a Partner at Front, Martin’s contribution to the Qube project team will be to oversee Façade design and procurement, energy analysis and Building Information Modelling.
4.3 SUSTAINABILITY DAVID LITTLER David leads the Building Services (MEP) and Sustainable Engineering discipline in the Asia Pacific region and is based in the Hong Kong office. He has worked on a wide range of project types, from student accommodation to theatres, in both the public and private domain. He has been fortunate to work on projects with other design team members who value engineering input at an early stage, and as a result has often been able to influence the form and fabric of a proposed building to enhance the design. This is particularly the case with low energy design projects. He has also worked on high quality spaces, from private residences to art galleries and libraries, where the services have been carefully integrated to a detailed level, so as to be largely unseen so that the aesthetic is not compromised
4.3 SUSTAINABILITY ROB MAY Rob May qualified with a First Class Honours degree from the University of Sheffield. During this time, he was also a national winner of the ‘Corus’ steelwork design awards and a national finalist in a multi disciplinary design competition run by the British Institute of structural engineers. Rob has been engaged with Buro Happold since 2004 working in the United Kingdom, followed by the US & then Hong Kong Rob is part of a number of expert communities within Buro Happold; he is particularly interested in implementing building information modeling throughout the practice. In addition to this, Rob writes his own scripts to modify various software packages to maximize their effectiveness for specific design issues. Rob is therefore a perfect partner with Martin Riese to develop the use of BIM by Qube
4.4 BUILDING ENVELOPE BUILDING ENVELOPE The building envelope is a fundamental part of the building in terms of producing a sustainable design. This element of the project can manifest the negative effects of heat gain and loss. Hence the building envelope is critical to the appropriate use of energy to heat and cool the building and needs to be managed carefully to ensure optimum sustainable performance throughout the lifecycle of the project. Building Envelope design and delivery is managed by Martin Riese and Front. Front is a leading international specialist consultancy in architectural façade systems for new construction, including curtain wall, bespoke cladding systems and the use of structural glass and related lightweight structures. Front’s portfolio of work ranges in size and complexity and includes large-scale high-rise curtain wall projects, public and cultural institutions, additions to historically sensitive sites, as well as custom designed work for private residences and artists. Front’s façade design and technical consulting work includes façade system design and optimization, detailing and analysis, value engineering, guidance through the procurement and bidding process, and review during fabrication, mock-up, testing, and construction. Front considers technical requirements such as the availability and constructability of materials, the criteria for structural and environmental performance, and recommends mock-up and test methods. Front works with a variety of building systems and a wide palette of materials, including steel, aluminium, copper, titanium, concrete, stone, glass, and other composites. A key aspect of Front’s collaborative work process is the team’s ability to utilize 3D analysis of façade systems to review, interrogate, manipulate and analyse building information as three dimensional data.

Front fully engages with its creative partners in the design and construction industry. Front provides strategic advice through intensive collaboration to realize innovative projects across the globe. As active and open-minded participants in the design process, Front’s goal is to find practical ways to realize the design intent.
4.5 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE ADRIAN L NORMAN Adrian founded ALN in 2005 and is the managing and design director of projects undertaken by the company. He has over 18 years’ experience in landscape consultancy and since 1993 has been based in Hong Kong. Adrian has experience in all areas of landscape from institutional, residential, commercial and hospitality to recreational public open space and urban design. He has worked as a consultant within large multidisciplinary design teams for numerous landscape projects throughout Asia including: Hong Kong; China; Thailand; Singapore; the Philippines; India; U.A.E and Korea from project inception through to construction supervision. Adrian brings to the projects he works on his extensive experience as a manager of landscape design teams, together with his strong design and presentation abilities. His design art work is exceptional and is considered an integral part of his landscape design process.
5.0 CONCLUSION

5.3 COST SAVINGS IN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION DESIGNING OUT WASTE 40% of the waste created by man comes from the building industry. By improving the accuracy and efficiency of the process that manages the industry of the built environment, significant reductions in overall waste are achievable. Similarly the use of energy in the built environment can be carefully analysed, simulated and managed – throughout the life cycle of projects. The resulting savings in reduced waste of materials, human resource and energy are returned to the stakeholder who invests in the enhanced Building Lifecycle Information Management process.

    1.0 INTRODUCTION QUBE ARCHITECTURE IS A COLLOBORATIVE PRACTICE THAT BELIEVES THAT A SUCCESSFUL PROJECT OUTCOME IS ABOUT SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE TEAM FROM ITS DIVERSE RANGE OF TALENTED & MOTIVATED PROFESIONALS TO SUIT THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE PROJECT.

    1.1 QUBE BACKGROUND AN INTERNATIONAL STUDIO WITH THREE DIVISIONS Qube Architecture is an International Design Studio with offices in both Hong Kong and New Zealand. Qube was founded in New Zealand and was expanded into Hong Kong in 2009. Qube is split into three divisions; Architectural projects in New Zealand managed by Managing Director Vaughan Bayley and large scale architectural projects in Hong Kong & Asia managed by Principal Director Sean Pinfold. Interior Design projects covering Hong Kong, Asia and New Zealand managed by Principal Director Elizabeth Reid. SIGNIFICANT PROJECT EXPERIENCE The principals at Qube have significant project experience in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Middle East and the UK having been senior members of well known architectural practices such as; Foster & Partners, RMJM, Leigh & Orange, Aedas and Woods Bagot. This background allows the practice to tackle a wide range of projects from residential to commercial & hospitality through to large scale infra structure and master planning, Airports & Transportation centres. Qube Architecture is working in collaboration with architectural, interior and landscape companies with vast experience in China & Asia projects.

    1.1 QUBE BACKGROUND COLLABORATION & SUSTAINABILITY The Studio believes in a collaborative approach from the outset of any design to ensure that a holistic outcome is generated. Qube is currently working on a large infrastructure design competition in Hong Kong with some of the worlds most talented consultancies. In tandem with this Qube places a strong emphasis on sustainable design solutions for ALL projects, which are firmly linked to careful cost analysis allowing our projects to be value for money solutions SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF AWARDS FOR NEW ZEALAND RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS The studio has received a significant number of awards for their residential projects, generating many repeat clients. We aim to attract creative and innovative talent from around the world by introducing a strongly design based studio environment, and by sharing profits with the team in a collaborative manner.     2.1 A COLLABORATIVE STUDIO PEOPLE & PROCESS. The core team disciplines are as follows; Qube fundamentally believes that a great project is the result of gathering the right group of motivated and talented professionals together specifically to serve the ‘needs’ of the DESIGN project. To this end Qube is constantly searching for new collaborators to extend its capability to serve the diverse rage of project types that it wishes to tackle. Our mindset is that “the sum of the parts is greater than the parts”. TECHNOLOGY The other benefit of this collaboration is the ability to upsize and downsize to suit the prevailing economic situation and hence project types to allow us to select the ‘right team’ for a specific project. SUSTAINABILITY Qube believes that good design is the result of a bottom up process. This process is two fold: First to establish the specific ‘needs’ (clients desires, project brief) of the project and secondly to follow its ‘bio diverse’ manifesto. The outcome of this process will be a design solution that is truly fit for purpose and ultimately does more with less. Each project FAÇADE where possible to be zero carbon. Qube starts each project with the same core team disciplines in place which it feels are LANDSCAPE fundamental to creating a firm base for the development of the project.

    2.1 THE DESIGN TEAM DESIGN The Design Team has been gathered from a diverse group of talented professionals. The key that links the team together is the desire to produce architecture that comes from a collaborative, bottom up and bio diverse process. A ‘bottom up’ process is one that respects the core needs of the project first. This allows the architecture to be evolved from the project needs , not a stylistic whim. The Design Team is as follows; SEAN PINFOLD Principal at Qube, worked for Leigh & Orange and Woods Bagot prior to setting up Qube KRISTOF CROLLA Collaborator with Qube. Kristof has worked with Zaha Hadid and is now assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong and founded the architecture practice LEAD (Laboratory for Explorative Architecture and Design) DYLAN BAKER-RICE Director and Lead Designer of Affect_t in London, but based in Hong Kong, with experience in interiors, furniture and family residences VAUGHAN BAILEY Managing Director at Qube New Zealand, worked in South Africa, London and New Zealand ELIZABETH REID Principal at Qube, worked for RMJM, Aedas and Venetian prior to setting up Qube. Elizabeth heads up the Interiors team MURRAY BORLAND Collaborator with Qube New Zealand. Murray has 30 years of experience working on a diverse range of projects ALEX WONG Collaborator with Qube. Alex worked with RMJM with a vast experience from working in Sydney, Australia.

    2.1 THE TECHNOLOGY TEAM THE APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT THE PROCESS The utilization of Advanced Technology plays an integral supporting role in the Qube Design Process. We strive to implement the latest technological methods and measures towards ensuring that maximum efficiency and effectiveness is maintained and ensured throughout the process. The technology team is split into two parts. The first is form finding, the second is the application of the BIM process Form finding is provided by Roberto Davolio. Roberto has collaborated with Qube since 1995 on a wide variety of projects. Roberto is a talented designer who has chosen to direct his passion toward defining the optimum form for a given design by the application of specific logarithmic logics. He then develops this form to ensure that it is fully optimized and give the maximum possibility for rationalization The application of the BIM process is provided by Martin Riese. Martin is a long time collaborator with Qube team members starting back in 1992 whilst working on the new airport terminal building at Chek Lap Kok for Sir Norman Foster & Partners. ROBERTO DAVOLIO Subsequent to working with Eric Owen Moss & Sir Norman Foster & Partners Roberto set up his own company Form & Structure. Refer to section 4.2 for his capability statement MARTIN RIESE Martin Riese - Martin is a founding partner of the integrated consultancy practice Front and currently manages the firm’s Asian operations. His prior architectural experience includes global work with premier firms including Santiago Calatrava, Foster and Partners and Frank Gehry.

    2.1 THE SUSTAINABILITY TEAM THE NEED FOR A SUSTAINABLE DESIGN SOLUTION Sustainable design is provided by David Littler. David is currently collaborating with Qube on a transport infrastructure competition. David’s approach is to work closely with the architect and wider design team to achieve building designs (massing, orientation, shading etc.) which inherently require less resource use through an appreciation of local climatic conditions, supported by computer simulation and analysis. The integration of low energy building services systems and renewable technologies complete the strategy. Sustainable engineering is provided by Rob May. Rob is currently also collaborating with Qube on the transport infrastructure competition. Rob is skilled in the use of specialist computer software which allows structural design solutions to be refined and optimised in close collaboration with the architecture to not only minimise material use, but to also produce elegant solutions. Each project where possible to be zero carbon. DAVID LITTLER David leads the Building Services (MEP) and Sustainable Engineering discipline in the Asia Pacific region for Buro Happold and is based in the Hong Kong office. He has been fortunate to work on projects with other design team members who value engineering input at an early stage, and as a result has often been able to influence the form and fabric of a proposed building to enhance the design. This is particularly the case with low energy design projects. Refer to Section 4.2 for his capability statement. ROB MAY Rob has gained vast experience working in a number of Buro Happold offices around the world including the UK, North America and currently in the Asia Pacific region based in Hong Kong. He has vast experience of using AutoCAD, Revit, Robot, and other specialist software, and is a Buro Happold leader in the optimisation of structural solutions to minimise material use. He has more recently been heavily involved in a practice wide programme to maximise the potential uses for Building Information Modelling technologies. With a world population that continues to expand the need for us to create building solutions that use less materials & energy is paramount if we are not to exceed to what provisions the planet can offer us. Simply put a bio diverse building solution is one that works with its context and not against it. The following is a summary of the key elements of the manifesto. 1. Context: The objective is to fully understand the specific site context of the building, establishing the limitations of the climate & geography, existing vernacular building approaches and materials & energy sources 2. Optimization of brief: The objective is to question the brief to ensure that the optimum solution is produced, a solution that reduces building area and surface area and hence materials usage to a minimum 3. Optimization of Consumables: The objective by understanding context & producing a minimum footprint is to reduce the consumption of consumables to a minimum 4.     2.3 BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING THE BACKGROUND & BENEFITS OF BIM Building Information Modelling (BIM) seeks to record, manage and progress all information about a building project in a single, internet-based 3 dimensional data base, which is available at all times to all project stakeholders, partners and collaborators. Following are the key benefits of managing building projects in this way. • The cost and programme penalties of inadequate 3 dimensional coordination are reduced. • The speed and accuracy of quantity, cost and risk management are improved. • Clash-free 2 dimensional drawings are produced automatically from the 3 dimensional BIM process. The resulting clarity of design and construction information reduces “Requests For Information” (RFIs) during project delivery. • The 3 dimensional BIM elements can be linked to directly to the supply chain thereby streamline in fabrication and delivery. • The 3 dimensional BIM elements can be used to simulate – and optimize - the delivery sequence, thereby reducing time and risk in the delivery. • The overall increase in coordination and clarity of project information reduces the traditional cost and time penalties associated with 2 dimensional information management processes. • It is widely accepted that BIM-driven projects cost at least 10% less than projects delivered using traditional 2 dimensional processes.

    3.1 VILLAS IN THE SKY VILLAS IN THE SKY VTS is a 12 storey residential tower situated on a 900m2 beach front site located in the heart of Juhu beach Mumbai, India. The desire of the client was to have his own “Villa in the Sky" incorporating guest floors below. By introducing a central recreation area including gardens, pool and gym facilities, gave privacy between the residence and the guest floors whilst also giving the main residence the impression of floating in the air. The residence also included an observation garden providing its very own outdoor living area.

    3.2 BORDER CROSSING FACILITY COMPETITION BORDER CROSSING FACILITY This international design competition required the provision of a new border crossing facility located to the East of the existing Chek Lap Kok airport on a new land platform. The facility serves to link Shenzhen & Macau to Hong Kong via a new bridge and tunnel structure. Qube collaborated with nine different disciplines on this project, the outcome is a building that performs 50% above LEED Platinum. The project was shortlisted by the competition review team. Qube continues to work with many of the collaborators on this project.

The basis of the design of the clubhouse was to produce a building that captured the prevailing winds and used them to cool the conditioned areas of the building for 4 months a year and also to provide passive cooling to the viewing deck. The start point of building form is inspired by the hull form of the recent Americas Cup catamarans. This form was then developed using CFD wind analysis to optimize the flow of air into its interior & also to produce a minimum surface area solution. The building structure uses a monocoque approach, which means that the overall building weight is significantly less than a comparable structural solution. The monocoque solution was also chosen to suit the site context which has gas rig platform fabrication facilities near by that can be used to fabricate the frame & skin.

    3.4 MIXED USE COMPLEX MIXED USE COMPLEX This mixed – use building containing two floors of offices and residential apartments on top floor is located on a 990m2 inner city site . As the building is located in a residential zone (now re- zoned as commercial), the objective was to ensure the building design was in keeping with existing residential surroundings. A Natural ventilated basement provides ample car parking for the two levels of offices and the two top apartments. Each apartment is equipped with green balconies that creates big outdoor area thereby increasing indoor outdoor flow.

    3.5 MIXED USE COMPLEX MIXED USE COMPLEX Mixed use office and retail building located on a 11,000m2 site in Vietnam. With street access on four sides allows separate entries to both towers and the main retail shopping complex, as well as a service entrance to the rear of the building, therefore reducing traffic congestion on site. Food and beverage is located on the podium roof top and opens up onto a public green garden area that also links up to an indoor cinema complex part of the shopping centre. The podium garden level also acts as link between the two office towers, allowing separate pedestrian crossing without interfering with the retail patrons.

    3.6 HOSPITALITY BAR & RESTAURANT This project is located in a boutique hotel as the main bar and restaurant, to serve the hotel guests, tourists and local neighbours. Currently, this well founded enclave was situated in the heart of the city, with an opposite design of ice, crystal and sparkle. This design was an image from the original founder, bringing the outdoors to indoor, natural finishes and colour palettes, bold Scandinavian fabric patterns, and a flowing timber slatted ceiling. The project comprised of using sustainable and recyclable products, energy saving lighting, etc, allowing at least 40% of the construction fitout to be a possible icon for future bio diverse projects.

    3.7 COMMERCIAL VETERINARY CENTRE This project is a newly refurbishment of an existing veterinary centre located in a more prominent premise. The reception, consultation rooms, surgery and wet room are on ground floor at street level, with access to a cock loft accommodating offices and storage. The general colour palette was simple and clean, using the logo electric blue, brilliant red and off white. The built in cabinetry for all rooms were to be long lasting, robust, therefore hairline stainless steel was used. The reception counter is a one off design using corian to create a curve in the reception counter end, flowing down to the seating bench within the waiting area. The centre is well known, popular, with a fit out life time of 12 to 15 years.

    3.8 RESIDENTIAL DUPLEX HOUSE This project is a beautiful two storey old village house in the countryside. With 3 meter high ceilings, it allows the open kitchen on the ground floor to create a grand and powerful, yet inviting, dining and eating experience. The island counter seats eight comfortably, allowing the guests to relate with the owners whilst engaged in the food preparation for the evening. The upper level has a large master bedroom with en- suite bathroom and walk in wardrobe area, a study and a guest bedroom, all with Burmese teak timber flooring and built in cabinetry.

    4.1 DESIGN TEAM SEAN PINFOLD Sean graduated Unitec School of Architecture in New Zealand in 2000 and joined City Design, Auckland, New Zealand where he spent 18 months as an Architectural Designer. Sean left City Design to establish a private practice in Cambridge, New Zealand focusing on Residential and Commercial projects. In 2007 Sean accepted a position with Leigh and Orange, Hong Kong and subsequently joined Woods Bagot. Sean gained extensive experience in the Middle East and Asia on large scale, multi storey commercial projects. Sean returned to New Zealand in early 2009 to establish the New Zealand and Hong Kong office of Qube Architecture Ltd. By combining his years of private practice in New Zealand with the knowledge gained in Hong Kong of large scale commercial projects Sean has built a winning formula that enables Qube Architecture to deliver exceptional projects.

    4.1 DESIGN TEAM KRISTOF CROLLA Kristof is a licensed architect who combines his work as Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong with his Antwerp-Hong Kong based architectural practice “Laboratory for Explorative Architecture & Design” (LEAD). Up until recently he worked in London as Lead Architect for Zaha Hadid Architects while teaching in parallel at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London (AA) and other institutions worldwide. (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) After graduating Magna Cum Laude at Ghent University and practicing in Belgium, he moved to London in 2005 and attended the AA’s master program Design Research Laboratory, from where his student work with team “Sugar Inc” was exhibited at the 2006 Venice Architectural Biennale. He is the founder of the International Workshop Series (IWS) which organize workshops worldwide exploring digital design and fabrication in architecture, and has been invited as a jury critic, lecturer and tutor in numerous institutions in Europe, China, Chile and South Africa.     4.1 DESIGN TEAM DYLAN BAKER-RICE Dylan is director and co-founder of the architectural practice Affect_t with offices in London and Hong Kong. Working on large-scale buildings and competitions alongside smaller scale experimental projects has allowed for a unique insight into new methods of manufacturing utilizing computer driven design. Graduating Summa Cum Laude with University Honours from Appalachian State University, Dylan studied Construction Technology and Sustainable (Whilst working for ZAHA HADID ) (Designed by Affect_t) Development. His professional practice began at Chris Benedict RA with multi- storey low-income housing in New York, specializing in the incorporation of green technologies and building sytsems. After earning his Masters in Architecture from Columbia University, Dylan began practice first for Asymptote Architecture in New York and then later for Zaha Hadid Architects in London before co-founding Affect_t. Currently, Dylan is teaching as a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong and acts as a visiting critic at the Architectural Association in London, and Pratt and Columbia University in New York.     4.1 DESIGN TEAM VAUGHAN BAYLEY Vaughan graduated from Port Elizabeth University in South Africa in 1987 with a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. He then he worked for 7 years in South Africa for practices on various residential, retail and commercial schemes developing his design, 3D visualization and technical skills before moving to London in 1994. In London, after a couple of short contract jobs, he joined M.R Partnership where he worked for the next 14 years and was (Whilst working for MR Partnership) (Whilst working for MR Partnership) involved in wide variety of schemes working as Assistant Architect on small and large jobs including the redevelopment of two city blocks of Covent Garden with hotels, office blocks, restaurants, cafes, residential. Vaughan also developed and then managed the IT infrastructure of the M.R Partnership office. In July 2008 Vaughan left M.R Partnership and emigrated to New Zealand where he did contract work in both Architecture and IT until being invited to join the Qube Architecture team as New Zealand MD in January 2010.     4.1 DESIGN TEAM ELIZABETH REID Elizabeth has worked in Hong Kong and around Asia since 1993. Working in both large and small scale companies has widened Elizabeth’s experience with management and design. Elizabeth’s involvement in all projects consists of liaison with the Client, building energetic teams for up and coming companies, feasibility evaluation, design development, contract documentation, and contract administration. (Whilst working with Aedas) (Whilst working with Aedas) Elizabeth’s role in RMJM was Director of the interior design team for projects in Hong Kong and Asia, leading a strong fifteen person team, with skills ranging from designers, CAD technicians, FF&E and project managers. Elizabeth worked in Macau as an Executive Design Manager for the Venetian Cotai Strip. The responsibilities were for creating Interior Design and FF&E Design Managerial Teams for Parcels 3 and 7&8 on the Cotai Strip, for design direction, coordination and follow through of the interior design fit out of all interior casino spaces.     4.1 DESIGN TEAM MURRAY BORLAND Murray has practiced Architecture for over 30 years in private practices as a Senior Partner or a sole Practitioner. Graduating in the early seventies Murray worked for a number of years in Bromley Kent in the UK, Belgium, Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong for the same Architects, during which time he extended his qualifications in Interior Design, and qualified initially with the British Institute of Interior Designers and later the Chartered Society of Designers in the UK. Returning to New Zealand Murray launched his own Private Practice and establishing two additional offices. As a Director and a specialist in the field of Polynesian and Ethnic Architecture he also brings a huge and diverse knowledge base to the practice, Murray has huge personal and professional humanitarian Architectural development interests especially in providing ecosystem and environmentally sustainable Architecture to benefit undeveloped areas.

With this, he formed his own interior design company in Hong Kong.     4.1 DESIGN TEAM DEBORA MARZOCCHI Debora obtained her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan). She began her practice during her studies collaborating with University Professors and Professionals. Since June 2007 she started to specialize her design skills in the high-end retail business, working for an important Italian studio. She followed the project development of the boutiques from the (Whilst working with DGA) (Whilst working with DGA) layout, to the grand-opening, assisting the clients on every phase of the project and coordinating local architects and consultants with the furniture suppliers. She has been collaborating as an active and leading member of several design teams and had the opportunity to work for Italian Luxury Brands such as MaxMara and Canali. In 2009, Debora founded M2A Design Ltd, an Interior Design firm in Hong Kong. M2A is a retail, corporate and residential oriented practice with a global design action operating in Italy, Mexico, Hong Kong and China.

    4.2 TECHNOLOGY ROBERTO DAVOLIO Form and Structure consulting services was founded by Roberto Davolio, an Italian born Architect specializing in building systems who has worked for Foster and Partners as part of the Specialist Modeling Group. In past working experience Roberto was employed as project designer for ASI, a design-build company based in Los Angeles. His experience covers the field of design, fabrication and installation of a variety of building structures including tensile systems and fabric structures. The development of close working relationships with American, Asian and European fabricators, has produced an experience and understanding in the design of standard curtain wall and cavity wall systems. Invaluable expertise on past high profile projects include the Beijing International Airport, the AOL Time Warner Center in New York, the Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas and the Grand Rapids Convention Center in Michigan.

    4.2 TECHNOLOGY MARTIN RIESE Martin Riese is a licensed Architect with 25 years of international experience in professional practice. He is a partner in the renowned integrated building industry practice called Front, which provides technology-enabled design and construction consultancy services worldwide. Martin is a Visiting Professor in the School of the Built Environment at Salford University and is a professional member of the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM). Martin has worked with Santiago Calatrava and Foster and Partners. He was the regional Managing Director of Gehry Technologies, where he oversaw numerous large-scale Building Information Modelling projects in Asia and throughout the world. Martin publishes and lectures regularly on the subject of “Construction Industry Transformation”. As a Partner at Front, Martin’s contribution to the Qube project team will be to oversee Façade design and procurement, energy analysis and Building Information Modelling.

    4.3 SUSTAINABILITY ROB MAY Rob May qualified with a First Class Honours degree from the University of Sheffield. During this time, he was also a national winner of the ‘Corus’ steelwork design awards and a national finalist in a multi disciplinary design competition run by the British Institute of structural engineers. Rob has been engaged with Buro Happold since 2004 working in the United Kingdom, followed by the US & then Hong Kong Rob is part of a number of expert communities within Buro Happold; he is particularly interested in implementing building information modeling throughout the practice. In addition to this, Rob writes his own scripts to modify various software packages to maximize their effectiveness for specific design issues. Rob is therefore a perfect partner with Martin Riese to develop the use of BIM by Qube

    4.4 BUILDING ENVELOPE BUILDING ENVELOPE The building envelope is a fundamental part of the building in terms of producing a sustainable design. This element of the project can manifest the negative effects of heat gain and loss. Hence the building envelope is critical to the appropriate use of energy to heat and cool the building and needs to be managed carefully to ensure optimum sustainable performance throughout the lifecycle of the project. Building Envelope design and delivery is managed by Martin Riese and Front. Front is a leading international specialist consultancy in architectural façade systems for new construction, including curtain wall, bespoke cladding systems and the use of structural glass and related lightweight structures. Front’s portfolio of work ranges in size and complexity and includes large-scale high-rise curtain wall projects, public and cultural institutions, additions to historically sensitive sites, as well as custom designed work for private residences and artists.     4.5 LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE ADRIAN L NORMAN Adrian founded ALN in 2005 and is the managing and design director of projects undertaken by the company. He has over 18 years’ experience in landscape consultancy and since 1993 has been based in Hong Kong. Adrian has experience in all areas of landscape from institutional, residential, commercial and hospitality to recreational public open space and urban design. He has worked as a consultant within large multidisciplinary design teams for numerous landscape projects throughout Asia including: Hong Kong; China; Thailand; Singapore; the Philippines; India; U.A.E and Korea from project inception through to construction supervision. Adrian brings to the projects he works on his extensive experience as a manager of landscape design teams, together with his strong design and presentation abilities. His design art work is exceptional and is considered an integral part of his landscape design process.
