Physician G.L. Krishna says syllabus for 'padartha vijnana' is meant to acquaint students with
philosophical concepts that provide basis for ayurvedic theories
G.L. Krishna, Bangalore-based physician and Homi Bhabha Fellow,
“But the subject has nothing at all to do with quantum physics,” Krishna wrote in a commentary
earlier this month in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics.
Krishna had in August 2021 written to the NCISM urging the regulatory body to remove the
expression “quantum mechanics” from its draft notification and define padartha vijnana as
“fundamental principles of ayurveda in relation to their roots in Indian philosophy”.

India was a knowledge society since Vedic times involving Maths, medicine,
metaphysics, astronomy etc written in Sanskrit, but all such learning came back to the
country several thousand years later as "discoveries by Western scientists", Indian
Space Research Organisation chairman S. Somnath has said.
All this knowledge travelled from here, reached the Arabs, then went to Europe and thousands of years
later came back to us as discoveries of great Western scientists. However, all this knowledge was written
here in this language Sanskrit," Mr. Somnath asserted.

In 1924, the French physicist Louis Victor de-Broglie (pronounced as de Broy)put
forward the hypothesis
“That moving particles of matter should display wave-like properties under suitable
conditions. The wave nature associated with material particles is called matter wave
or de -Broglie wave, He argued that nature is symmetrical ie physical entities –
matter and energy, must have symmetrical character. If radiation shows dual
nature, matter also exhibit dual nature”.

Heisenberg, the architect of Quantum Mechanics. “After the conversations with Tagore about
Indian philosophy, some of the ideas (of Quantum Physics) that had seemed so crazy suddenly
made much more sense. That was a great help for me” (Capra 1989). He also says, “All the
same, some statements of ancient philosophy are rather near to those
of modern science. This simply shows how far one can get by
combining the ordinary experience of nature that we have without
doing experiments with the untiring effort to get some logical order
into this experience to understand it from general principles”.

Erwin Schrodinger, one of the fathers of quantum
mechanics, also known for his deep interest in Upanishads
(Capra 1989) had commented, “the unity and continuity of
vedanta are reflected in the unity and continuity of wave
mechanics” (Gewali 2009; Schrodinger 1944). The logical
point of contact between quantum theory and vedic
thoughts, hence, lies in their worldviews and understanding
of the nature of reality. Worldview has a bearing on the way
a biological system is understood. We have seen the influence
of classical worldview in western medicine. The following
sections outline the role of the integrative worldview of veda
in ayurveda.

Quantum worldview in Ayurveda

Quantum worldview in Ayurveda holism and interconnectedness:
“visargādānavikshepai: soma surya anilā yathā|
dhārayanti jagat deham kapha pitta anilā tathā||”
just like moon, sun and wind sustain the universe by their cold, heat and dispersion /
movement, respectively, likewise kapha, pitta and vata support the body with similar
functions. These principles extend to all living beings from the smallest to the largest.
“prajāhitam dheergamāyush ..vedam ...” (ch.1/verse 27) i.e.,
this is a science for well-being of all creatures. He goes onto say

Vata includes parameters like dryness, lightness, coldness, roughness and subtleness, all of which
influence movement.
Pitta, in addition to the function of metabolic transformation, includes parameters such as heat
(temperature) , acidity (pH) , unctuousness, penetrating power and fluidity.
Kapha indicates cohesion and structural growth and also properties such as coldness, heaviness,
softness, unctuousness, sliminess, stability and sweetness

“sarvam dravyam pānchabhautikam asmin arthe; tat cetanāvat acetanam ca|”
(ch. 26/verse10)
“According to this science, all matter is constituted of five mahābhuta; some are
animate and some others inanimate”

PanchaMahabhuta the five basic essential elements:
1. Akasha (ether),
2. Vayu (air),
3. Agni (fire),
4. Jala (water)
5. Prithvi (earth).
According to modern chemistry atoms are the smallest particles of every
substance. This theory of Panchamahabhuta holds good at the atomic level too

In an atom there is presence of protons and neutrons within the nucleus at the center. Electrons are
revolving around the nucleus in its definite orbit.
 The protons and electrons carry a charge and this energy is responsible for the function of the atom
which can be said as the inherent character of Agni Mahabhuta.
 Protons and electrons are having a definite bonding between them. This property is because of the
presence of Jala Mahabhuta which is having the capacity of bonding as its inherent character.
 Every atom has got a definite mass which is depicted in the form of atomic mass number.[4] This can be
compared to the Pruthvi Mahabhuta which is having the property of heaviness.
 Electrons which are continuously moving around the nucleus in definite orbits can be compared to the
property of Vayu Mahabhuta which is moving continuously.
 Irrespective of its size every atom occupies some space in universe. This is nothing but the innate
property of Akasha Mahabhuta (ether element).
