The document discusses an IP Budget Optimizer tool created by Kenneth Horton to help companies better budget for intellectual property portfolio management costs. The tool allows users to estimate yearly costs by inputting numbers of expected actions like patent filings, payments, and litigation. It then calculates a total estimated yearly cost and suggested monthly retainer amount. The tool is meant to help companies accurately budget costs that can fluctuate month to month and negotiate fixed monthly payments with outside counsel. However, the tool has limitations like imperfect cost forecasting and not including income from the IP portfolio.

Cracking the Workplace Discipline Code Main.pptxWorkforce Group
Cultivating and maintaining discipline within teams is a critical differentiator for successful organisations.
Forward-thinking leaders and business managers understand the impact that discipline has on organisational success. A disciplined workforce operates with clarity, focus, and a shared understanding of expectations, ultimately driving better results, optimising productivity, and facilitating seamless collaboration.
Although discipline is not a one-size-fits-all approach, it can help create a work environment that encourages personal growth and accountability rather than solely relying on punitive measures.
In this deck, you will learn the significance of workplace discipline for organisational success. You’ll also learn
• Four (4) workplace discipline methods you should consider
• The best and most practical approach to implementing workplace discipline.
• Three (3) key tips to maintain a disciplined workplace.

Last quarter, I outlined a process for managing an IP portfolio using a budgeting process. That process included the steps
of (i) reviewing historical costs, (ii) forecasting the needs of the portfolio, (iii) establishing the budget, (iv) implementing
the budget, and (v) following the budget.
In the second and third steps of this process, I presented simple cost estimation tool. I emphasized that it was a simple
tool because it only considered the costs of obtaining the IP assets. Unfortunately, managing a moderate to large IP
portfolio involves much more than just obtaining the IP assets. It also includes managing post‐grant procedures,
enforcement, licensing, annuities, opinions, etc. And each of these activities has an associated cost that should be
considered when budgeting for the portfolio.
So for moderate to large portfolios, a more detailed and realistic budgeting tool is needed. I recently created such a
tool—the IP Budget OptimizerTM
—for a potential client and wanted to share it with this audience.
