In a workshop held in Luxembourg on September 22nd 2015, we discuss how our dynamic machine translation technology can create engines very fast by obtaining little data from big data, and also, how our automatic post-editing rules improve the performance of those engines extremely fast.

We are at the peak of inflated expectations with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in our industry. However, soon we will reach the plateau of productivity, and many of the tasks humans are currently doing will be automated. Shall be be scared or take the opportunity to add more value to the solutions we deliver? In this presentation, Diego will review a few existing products in the market, as well as highlight some potential new use cases with a high return on the investment. I can't help falling in love with machine translation

Like it or not, machine translation (MT) is here to stay. Certainly, there are some fields where MT (and CAT tools) will never be used because the process of creating a translated text requires significant creativity; but in others, MT is already competing successfully with human translators. MT is currently used in many technical fields and also for e-commerce, where a machine translated sentence plus a light post-editing is often good enough for the end client. But don’t worry, although some types of translation will be done using big data and natural language processing, top-quality human translations will never disappear! In this presentation, we will show, first, how MT can produce good translations in fields such as e-commerce and hospitality, although it might not be well-suited for certain other fields. We will touch on the issue of confidentiality. Then, we will describe the best way to deal with post-editing jobs from the freelance translator’s point of view and discuss key aspects such as the discount. Finally, we will cover how tools in the market deal with MT post-editing and some products specifically designed for the task. (presented at the METM16 conference) We will show that if having machines do the translating helps translation professionals increase their income and have more free time and also opens up new business opportunities, the best option is to embrace change and love MT.

The Discreet Charm of Machine Translation

Machine Translation (MT) can provide a direct impact to the profit of professional translators and small and medium-sized LSPs. While still many think that MT is limited to Google or Bing, there are cost-effective solutions in the market that can be used in many situations to increase the speed, reduce the turnaround time, and improve the consistency (quality) of our jobs. In this session, we will cover the most important topics needed to successfully train, improve, measure, and price MT systems, even with the small Translation Memories (TMs) that are common among the translation industry. Together with processes, we will cover the available tools in the market, so that it is easier for freelancers and small LSPs to both increase the bottom line and diversify the operations thanks to exploiting new business opportunities. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
