Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corp. donated 10 tablet computers and $7,560 to the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County. The tablets will allow club directors to track student progress and be used for homework help. The funding will cover the cost of an additional afterschool counselor, allowing the club to increase capacity from 75 to 100 students. Gulf Chemical reached out to the Boys & Girls Club through United Way of Brazoria County to support education in the local community. The donation will help the club better serve students and allow more children to participate in quality afterschool programs.

FREEPORT — Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corp. representatives presented 10 Asus Transformer
Tablets and a check for $7,560 to the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County on Jan. 26.
Five tablets are going to Boys & Girls Club Connections sites in Brazoria County and five to its
afterschool club at Clute Intermediate. The funds from the check will cover the annual cost for one
additional afterschool counselor.
Gulf Chemical reached out to United Way of Brazoria County in November with a desire to impact
education in Freeport, home to its local operation. United Way of Brazoria County connected Gulf
Chemical to the Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County, a community partner of United Way, to help fill the
needs of the club.

relations manager, and Clint Ziehl, executive director of Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County, pose with club students after the
company’s donation of tablets and funding.
2. The tablets at Connections sites will allow directors to track attendance, grades and progress of
students on a daily basis, and be available for student homework assistance, where before there were no
computers, tablets or laptops for usage. Tablets at the Clute Intermediate afterschool club will also be
available to students for school work.
“(Gulf Chemical) has enabled us to better serve our kids, offer a better program and serve more children
with our quality programs and activities,” said Clint Ziehl, executive director of Boys & Girls Club of
Brazoria County. “This will enable our program to reach a new level, previously unseen at these club
sites.”
The $7,560 provided by Gulf Chemical will also have a tremendous impact on the Clute Intermediate
afterschool club. Loss of grant funding forced the club to cut capacity from 100 students to 75. The
funding from Gulf Chemical allows Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County to hire an additional afterschool
counselor, meaning greater resources for more students.
“The donation from Gulf Chemical will now allow us to open the club up to serve 100 kids, which puts us
right back at 100 percent of what we were able to do with the federal funding, all now funded at the local
level from our own community,” said Ziehl.
Gulf Chemical, like Boys & Girls Club of Brazoria County, has experienced ups and downs in recent
years but has felt the support of the community throughout that time. Gulf Chemical has increased
efforts to return the favor and give back to the community.
“It is no secret that Brazoria County is growing, and providing the correct infrastructure to support the
families who are working and living here is crucial to everyone’s success,” said Kimberly Danesi, Human
Resources and Public Relations Manager at Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corp. “Education is one of the
key factors of ensuring the continued growth of Brazoria County.”
