The Board of Directors of the Community Founda-
tion of Morgan County, Inc. is proud to announce
that the foundation will help to distribute over
$500,000 in scholarships to Morgan County resi-
dents in the new year.
The foundation distributes support from several
sources. There are approximately 30 scholarships
from funds and endowments that comprise the
CFMC Scholarship Program. The CFMC also ad-
ministers the local Lilly Endowment Community
Scholarship Program, in cooperation with the Inde-
pendent Colleges of Indiana. The foundation is also
honored to administer the Kendrick Foundation,
Inc. Scholarships.
No two scholarships are alike and each scholarship
has its own distinct selection criteria, such as finan-
cial need, special interest/intended study or GPA
requirements. Education criteria vary, as well, and
some scholarships target graduating seniors, while
some are available to students currently enrolled in
college, and some are available to individuals over 30
returning to school.

SomeThoughts as theYear Ends
I joined the CFMC early this year and the end
of the year is a good time for me to look back
and take stock of this year’s progress. We are be-
ing more assertive in telling our story as we try
to harness and nurture the spirit of philanthropy
among people and organizations who can help
their friends and neighbors.
There are many good people in our communities,
which is good because there are also more and
more needy people in Morgan County. Maybe you
could call our work “matchmaking” because we
try to help those who want to help to find those
who could use the help.
Donations:Timing and Size
There is no bad time to support our work, but
some people save their decisions about giving un-
til the end of the year when they take stock and
spread good cheer. The Community Foundation
of Morgan County can be a good target for your
giving because we have many options. A gift here
can support health care, or scholarships, or the
arts, or many other endeavors. An unrestricted gift
will help support the CFMC office itself, helping
us to pay the overhead that is required to maintain
ScholarshipsTop $500,000 in ’08
Last year, twenty-four Kendrick Foundation, Inc. Scholarships were awarded to students
studying health care. These scholarships are worth up to $10,000 per person.

With an IRA?
This is for people who
have over-funded their
IRA. Until the end of
2007 you may have an
option of transferring
IRA assets directly to a
charity so the transfer is
not included in the IRA
owner’s income and is
not taxed, preserving the
full amount for charitable
purposes. You can make
direct charitable transfers
up to $100,000 per year.
Nothing is lost to taxes,
instead of a possible loss
of up to 75 percent to
taxes.

a professionally-managed office.
There is no donation too small.
Donations this year have come in
denominations of $1 or $25, and
they’ve also come in some rather
large numbers. Each donation is
very important to making a differ-
ence in Morgan County.
Remember Us inYour Plans
As a qualified public charity, the
Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. can
help donors to open a new endowment or fund for a
special purpose they have in mind, or perhaps choose
from several charitable fund options for their gift. Do-
nor Advised Funds do not qualify for tax-free IRA
transfers.
Please do not forget to consider adding the Community
Foundation to your will, or trust, or as a beneficiary on
your pension, retirement account or insurance policy.
It is not too late for you to make a lasting difference.
Interested individuals may receive more information by
contacting me, Tom Zoss, executive director, locally at

Scholarship applicants for
2008 will find the Schol-
arship Central Web site to
be easy to use. It’s located
online at www.cfmconline.
org/scholarships. Visitors
can simply click on their
education category (high
school, private school or
home school category, or
non-traditional/post high
school category) to be di-
rected to a page which lists
all scholarships for which
they might apply.
The foundation has also
tried to spread the word in
new ways, using billboards
and mailing postcards to
all senior high school stu-
dents in Morgan County.
The foundation’s goal is to
help spread the word about
available scholarships to
every student and family
that might be interested.
Applications are available
online at www.cfmconline.
org/scholarships, in Mor-
gan County High School
guidance offices, and by
contacting the Community
Foundation of Morgan
County, Inc.
Application deadlines vary
by scholarship and are in
January and March.
For questions, please con-
tact Lisa Trusty, program
officer, locally at (317) 831-
1232 or toll-free at (877)
822-6958.
The funds totaling $33,081 from the Community
Foundation of Morgan County, Inc.’s 2007 grant cy-
cle are already spreading across the county through
local projects. On Nov. 28, Spay Neuter Indiana Pets,
Inc. began its feline spay/neuter project, funded in
part by a CFMC Matching Grant. The organization
traveled with “The Neuter Scooter” to Mooresville
where it offered low cost spay/neuter services.
According to Spay Neuter Indiana Pets, Inc., there
are approximately 18,429 owned cats and at
least 7,373 feral cats in Morgan County.
“Overpopulation of cats, and dogs as well,
causes a heavy burden on a community in
several areas,” said Tonja Robertson, presi-
dent of Spay Neuter Indiana Pets, Inc. “The
costs of catching, housing, feeding and in a
majority of cases eventually euthanizing, is
enormous.”
Ten CFMC Matching Grants and seven
CFMC Arts Grants were given, totaling $25,450 and
$7,631, respectively.
Kari Palma, music teacher of Smith and Central el-
ementary schools, will purchase over 40 instruments
this school year with which students can perform
African, Caribbean and Cuban music thanks to a
CFMC Arts Grant.
“Music is the soundtrack of our lives,” Palma said.
“What better way to teach our children how to chan-
nel their emotions, thoughts and creativity than
through the positive experience of making music, to-
gether, in community with one another.”
Other CFMC Arts Grants recipients include Moores-
ville Public Library, Morgan County Public Library,
Academy of Hoosier Heritage, Coordinated Aging
Services for Morgan County, Mooresville Revitalization
Group and Eminence Lions Club.
Other CFMC Matching Grants recipients include
Damar Services, Inc.; Morgantown Youth Sports; Mor-
gantown Senior Citizens Center; Commu-
nity Service Center of Morgan County, Inc.
(dba WellSpring); Youth Connections; Boys
and Girls Clubs of Morgan County; United
Way of Central Indiana Morgan County; and
Mooresville Revitalization Group.
More information, including a complete list
of projects and amounts awarded, is available
in the News section of the CFMC Web site at
www.cfmconline.org.
The CFMC Matching and Arts Grants are made pos-
sible through the foundation’s CommonWealth Fund.
Although many projects will be completed thanks to
CFMC grants, over $100,000 in grant funds were re-
quested and the needs continue to grow.
If you are interested in helping Morgan County non-
profits achieve more of their goals in years to come by
donating to the CommonWealth Fund, please contact
the Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. lo-
cally at (317) 831-1232 or toll-free at (877) 822-6958.

Many good works have happened through the
Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc.
this year, in part with the help of our generous fund
holders.
On October 25, the CFMC Board of Directors
hosted a reception to honor fund holders and in-
troduce them to Tom Zoss, the foundation’s execu-
tive director since April. Fund holders, board of
directors members, committee members and staff
gathered in the foundation’s office at the Academy
Building in Mooresville.
The foundation manages endowment and non-per-
manent funds for a variety of non-profit organiza-
tions, causes and scholarships. Endowment funds
can start with as little as $500, with distribution be-
ginning when the fund reaches $5,000. Non-perma-
nent funds can be created at any starting level.
For more information on establishing an endow-
ment or non-permanent fund, contact Tom Zoss
locally at (317) 831-1232 or toll-free at (877) 822-

  • 3. The funds totaling $33,081 from the Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc.’s 2007 grant cy- cle are already spreading across the county through local projects. On Nov. 28, Spay Neuter Indiana Pets, Inc. began its feline spay/neuter project, funded in part by a CFMC Matching Grant. The organization traveled with “The Neuter Scooter” to Mooresville where it offered low cost spay/neuter services. According to Spay Neuter Indiana Pets, Inc., there are approximately 18,429 owned cats and at least 7,373 feral cats in Morgan County. “Overpopulation of cats, and dogs as well, causes a heavy burden on a community in several areas,” said Tonja Robertson, presi- dent of Spay Neuter Indiana Pets, Inc. “The costs of catching, housing, feeding and in a majority of cases eventually euthanizing, is enormous.” Ten CFMC Matching Grants and seven CFMC Arts Grants were given, totaling $25,450 and $7,631, respectively. Kari Palma, music teacher of Smith and Central el- ementary schools, will purchase over 40 instruments this school year with which students can perform African, Caribbean and Cuban music thanks to a CFMC Arts Grant. “Music is the soundtrack of our lives,” Palma said. “What better way to teach our children how to chan- nel their emotions, thoughts and creativity than through the positive experience of making music, to- gether, in community with one another.” Other CFMC Arts Grants recipients include Moores- ville Public Library, Morgan County Public Library, Academy of Hoosier Heritage, Coordinated Aging Services for Morgan County, Mooresville Revitalization Group and Eminence Lions Club. Other CFMC Matching Grants recipients include Damar Services, Inc.; Morgantown Youth Sports; Mor- gantown Senior Citizens Center; Commu- nity Service Center of Morgan County, Inc. (dba WellSpring); Youth Connections; Boys and Girls Clubs of Morgan County; United Way of Central Indiana Morgan County; and Mooresville Revitalization Group. More information, including a complete list of projects and amounts awarded, is available in the News section of the CFMC Web site at www.cfmconline.org. The CFMC Matching and Arts Grants are made pos- sible through the foundation’s CommonWealth Fund. Although many projects will be completed thanks to CFMC grants, over $100,000 in grant funds were re- quested and the needs continue to grow. If you are interested in helping Morgan County non- profits achieve more of their goals in years to come by donating to the CommonWealth Fund, please contact the Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. lo- cally at (317) 831-1232 or toll-free at (877) 822-6958.
