Return to the City of Water: Quantifying Change in the Venetian Canalsvenice2point0
This document summarizes studies conducted on the canals of Venice from 1991 to 2010. It analyzes the timing of tides and quantifies changes over time in the hydrodynamics of the canals. Methodologies are described for measuring tide delay at two locations and collecting hydrodynamics data on flow velocities and directions. The results show changes in velocities and shifting flow patterns between 1999 and 2010. The document sets out to standardize the presentation of canal data and ensure its sustainable collection and analysis into the future.

This document summarizes work done to document the evolution of Venice's formal economy. It describes how the city has experienced a massive influx of tourism which has led local stores to close as they cater more to tourists. Resident populations have declined as well. The document outlines studies done in 2004, 2005, and 2009 to categorize and standardize data on retail stores, restaurants, and hotels. Comparisons of different areas of Venice over time show a shift towards more tourist-oriented businesses and loss of basic necessity stores. Flooding was also found to negatively impact the local economy through loss of business and productivity. The informal economy was mapped and its potential impact on the formal sector estimated.
An artistic campaign in Venice brought awareness to social problems through interactive installations. Three approaches were used: Interacting through installations that stimulated discussion of issues like trash dumping; Exploring through geocaching games that shared information on issues while exploring the city; and Contributing by collecting community data to add to exhibitions addressing concerns. Testing found installations worked best with stimulus and geocaching was an engaging way to learn, though maintenance was required. The complete exhibition aimed to connect these pieces to create awareness through interaction, exploration and contribution.
The document analyzes the environmental, economic, and social effects of cruise ships on Venice. It discusses the origins and growth of cruise shipping, and why investigating its impacts is important to preserving Venice. The project aims to measure particulate matter, hydrodynamic effects, and vibrations from ships, determine passenger spending, and analyze population increases. Preliminary findings show particulate increases when ships pass and altered water flows. Surveys found most passengers spend little time in Venice. The document recommends continued air quality testing and work with local organizations to further understand cruise impacts on Venice.

This document summarizes a study on retail changes in Venice, Italy. It finds that the city's residential population is declining while the number of tourists is increasing. Many stores have closed, especially in the Castello neighborhood where 24% of stores are now closed. The document analyzes changes in store types over time and locations. It also examines the relationship between population changes, tourism, and basic needs. The recommendations include developing a smartphone app to collect retail data, maintaining an associated website, and launching a campaign around Venice's unique laws regarding retail.
This document provides an update on hydrodynamic studies of the canals in Venice. It summarizes past studies from 1900 to 2010 and describes the present hydrodynamic study conducted by Team Hydro. The study uses an ISMAR model with tide and wind data as inputs to simulate water flow in the Venice lagoon and canals. Team Hydro collected speed and direction data during incoming and outgoing tides and found changes in flow patterns in different areas. The conclusion suggests varying flow between the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal depending on tidal direction.
Data was collected on passenger numbers for three vaporetto stops in Venice - Sant'Angelo, Santa Maria del Giglio, and San Samuele - including hourly, daily, and individual trip arrivals and departures. Charts were generated from this data showing passenger numbers over the hours of operation for each stop. The total numbers of arriving and departing passengers as well as average passengers per boat were also calculated for each location.
The document analyzes pedestrian traffic in Venice and proposes a computer model to predict traffic. It notes that tourism has increased strain on Venice's infrastructure and mobility. A team of engineering students developed a model centered on Venice's tourist triangle to simulate pedestrian traffic flows from tourists and residents. The model accounts for different tourist types and destinations, resident commutes, and special events to help the city manage pedestrian infrastructure and traffic preventatively.

The document summarizes efforts to research the history of Venice through various means including manuscripts, archaeology, and genetic genealogy. It describes the Venice State Archive which contains over 1000 years of records in need of transcription. It proposes a digital transcription program called uScript that would allow collaborative transcription of manuscripts to reduce redundancy and facilitate research. It also discusses using genetic genealogy to study the origins of the ancient Veneti people by collecting DNA samples from targeted locations and comparing them to samples from the Veneto region. The goal is to integrate genetic data with historical and archaeological evidence to better understand Venetian history.
This document summarizes research capturing the changing retail sector in Venice from the 1950s to 2010. It analyzes population and tourism trends over time and examines the typology and number of stores in different neighborhoods like San Polo, finding a 10% reduction in stores from 2004-2010. Data was collected on over 4000 stores and standardized into categories like food, clothing and art. Maps and interactive visualizations were created to show changes by location and type over time. Recommendations include improving data collection, a smartphone app, prioritizing further study in Castello, and developing a user-friendly website to share findings.
PreserVenice: Preserving Venetian Material Culturevenice2point0
The PreserVenice initiative is dedicated to obtaining, funding, providing documentation, and increasing awareness of material culture to contribute toward preservation. We created interactive maps, designed a mobile application, updated PreserVenice's website, and conducted an analysis of different measuring techniques for boats in order to provide the means for future restoration and preservation.
PreserVenice: Preserving Venetian Material Culturevenice2point0
The document discusses efforts to preserve and document Venetian material culture, including public art, traditional watercraft, and other vernacular objects. It outlines initiatives by PreserVenice to catalog over 7,000 pieces of public art using interactive maps and databases. PreserVenice is also working to document traditional boats before they deteriorate further, comparing documentation methods like hand measurements, photogrammetry, and 3D scanning. The goal is to create a centralized online database to help preserve Venetian cultural heritage.
Mobility in the Floating City: A Study of Pedestrian Transportation venice2point0
This document discusses mobility challenges in Venice and potential solutions. It notes that Venice has 126 islands connected by over 450 bridges, with 160 km of pedestrian walkways. Tourism has greatly increased mobility challenges, with over 60,000 daily visitors. The document outlines a study of pedestrian and boat traffic patterns. It proposes creating an agent-based computer model to simulate mobility and inform improvements. A smartphone app is suggested to help tourists and Venetians navigate boat routes and schedules, with features like maps, schedules, ticket purchasing. The goal is to improve overall mobility efficiency in the floating city.
Cruise Control: Cruise Ships Influencing the City of Venicevenice2point0
Cruise ships have significantly impacted the city of Venice over the last decade. The number of ships increased 40% from 2009 to 2019 while the number of passengers nearly doubled. This has led to concerns about vibrations, changes to water flow patterns, increased traffic on land, and higher black carbon levels in the air. Measurements using phones and specialized instruments found vibrations from ships, up to a 57% increase in water velocities, high use of buses but all forms of transportation advertised, and black carbon levels correlated with ship and ferry traffic though within regulations. While the economy benefits, the environmental and community impacts require ongoing study.
This document discusses Venipedia, a project to create an online knowledge base about Venice, Italy. It provides information on various topics related to Venice such as canals, churches, and public art. The project aims to combine and share data about Venice online and in the field. It manages raw data and uses semantic mapping and linked data. Venipedia also analyzes user statistics and performance to understand website usage and make comparisons. It provides contact information for the project leaders and the Venipedia website.
This document outlines Venipedia, a project to share knowledge and data about Venice online. It discusses managing information about various aspects of Venice like canals, churches, and public art through a wiki platform. The project aims to provide information to visitors in Venice through mobile apps and its website, while organizing raw data through features like linked data and assigning data properties. It concludes by inviting questions to the project leaders and provides contact details.
The document describes several art installations in an urban environment that engage the senses and involve interactive games/puzzles. The installations relate to stores, flooding, turbulence, garbage, pigeons, demographics, infrastructure, tourism and public art. They incorporate various sensors and electronics like Arduinos that detect motion, pressure, acceleration and more to trigger lights, sounds, projections and scent diffusers in an interactive experience for the public.
The document summarizes a study on pedestrian and boat mobility in Venice. The study collected pedestrian count data from 29 bridges over 6 weeks, totaling over 600,000 counts. It also analyzed video footage to classify pedestrians as Venetian or tourist. Boat schedule data was obtained from ACTV. An interactive computer model was developed using this data, treating pedestrians and boats as autonomous agents to simulate mobility throughout Venice and predict the impact of changes. The model can help city planners with evacuation planning and optimizing pedestrian flows. This was the first study to integrate pedestrian and boat mobility data into a single model of urban mobility for Venice.
This document lists various forms used by the Soprintendenza Archeologica for archaeological documentation. It includes forms for indexing, site information sheets, analyses, artifacts like statues and skeletons, stratigraphic units, and more. Many of the forms are searchable and can be manually submitted or cross-referenced between archaeologists.
This document summarizes the process of using genetic genealogy to help uncover the roots of Venice. Researchers collected Y-chromosomal DNA samples from over 300 male subjects from the Triveneto region of Italy. They analyzed loci on the non-coding regions of the Y-chromosome, specifically examining short tandem repeats. A hypothetical comparison of STR patterns from Venice samples to those of potential ancestral populations in Paphlagonia, Lusatia and Brittany showed one of the Venice samples had an identical STR pattern to a Paphlagonia sample, providing genetic evidence supporting the theory that some Venetians may have ancestral origins in Paphlagonia.
This document describes a collaboration between archaeologists and geneticists to study the origins of the Venetian people. Researchers collected DNA samples from over 300 male participants from the Veneto region of Italy. They extracted and analyzed Y-chromosomal DNA to examine markers like short tandem repeats at various loci. Comparing the Venetian DNA to hypothetical profiles from potential ancestral homelands like Paphlagonia could help validate or disprove existing theories about Venetian origins. This multidisciplinary approach combining archaeological, historical and genetic evidence has the potential to uncover new insights into this important question.
