FORENSIC DNA PROFILING: Strengths and LimitationsHezekiah Fatoki
Forensic science is defined as the application of scientific knowledge and experimentation to legal contentions, be they civil or criminal matters. DNA profiling (also called DNA typing or DNA fingerprinting) is a forensic techniques used to identify individuals by characteristics of their DNA in crime cases. DNA profiling can be use to resolve paternal and ancestral issues. This process was built mainly on the knowledge of two scientific breakthroughs. First is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which was conceived by Kary Mullis in 1983 at Cetus Corporation, USA. Second is the Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of repeated DNA sequences which was discovered by Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys in 1985 at the University of Leicester, UK. The strengths and limitations of the current and emerging forensic DNA profiling are the focus of this seminar. It is my expectation that the newly proposed synthetic human genome project will aid the strength of this process in the future.

3. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Firstly, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our Social
Psychology lecturer, Mr. Shankar for teaching us this subject where he
implemented all the knowledges and social psychological concepts with
various interesting examples. In addition, Mr. Shankar had guided us
throughout the whole process of this project by helping us to understand
all the concepts during lecture classes.
We would also like to thank Mr. Shankar for giving us this project
where we were given the opportunity to further our research on the
psychological concepts and apply them in this video clip. Due to this
opportunity given, we were also able to use these concepts and apply
them in our daily routines.
Lastly, we would like to thank all of our group members for all the
teamwork and participation in this final project. All group members were
very participative and contributive in different aspects which caused the
whole process to be carried out smooth and successfully.

4. INTRODUCTION
In this project, we were required to form a group of 5-6 person. We
were required to conduct a social psychology conceptual video clip which
implies the theories from various topics that has been taught and
discussed in class. The video is to be submitted along with a written
report. In addition, there will also be a presentation for the video that we
have filmed.
For the video, we came out with a scenario with the title of “Love,
the worst thing ever”. This story is about the love story between Alexis and
Prem. Social psychology concepts will be shown throughout the whole
video. The concepts that we included are, passionate love, first
impression, sexism, aggression, mood of audience and cost benefit model
of helping.
As for the next task, we are required to write a report about the
whole process of making the video clip . On the other hand, we also
prepared Power Point slides for the presentation which is more convenient
and easier for students present the concepts that were used in the video.
The objective of making this video clip is to will help students to
learn and also have a better understanding of the connection between
concepts and perspective within psychology applied in daily lives. Hence,
students will be able to engage in psychological inquiry and become self-
regulated learners.

boyfriend.

19. CONCEPT
1. Passionate Love
Passionate love is a state of intense longing for union with one’s partner.
The first appearance of passionate love may coincide with puberty and it is
highly related to a physical arousal.
In the video, Alexis is an university student. Therefore, she is at a stage of
puberty where she is longing to have a partner in her life. Coincidentally,
she dropped her books and Prem helped her to pick them up. Their hands
touched when picking up the same book which is where the physical
arousal occurs. Then, they gaze into each eyes which is where the
passionate love between both of them begins.
2. First Impression
A first impression is the event when one person first encounters another
person and forms a mental image of that person.
In the video, Shi Lik was sitting in front of Starbucks when Alexis and Prem
sat at the table in front of him. Their public demonstration of love causes
Shi Lik to have a bad first impression about them as they were bad
students who do not pay any attention in studies.
3. Sexism
Sexism is an act of gender stereotypes where people have an idea about
how men and women should behave. It can be based on socially and
culturally defined beliefs and it Can be formed very early in life.
In the video, Prem started an argument with Alexis as he had a gender
stereotype that a girl should not prop her legs because only mens are
allowed to do it. There is when sexism occurs in their argument.
4.
19
20. 5. Aggression
Aggression is behavior that intends to harm another individual. It can be in
a combination of direct, indirect, verbal, and physical behavior.
In the video, when Prem and Alexis were having an argument. A verbal
aggression occurred when Alexis shouted at Prem and Prem shouted back
at Alexis. Then, they started to push each other which is where physical
aggression begins. Alexis then slaps Prem which shows direct physical
aggression.
6. Persuasion: Mood of audience
Persuasion is an act that attempts to influence others’ attitudes or
behaviors. Mood of the audience act as an important aspect in influencing
the route chose. When the audience is in a good mood, both physical and
psychological, it can enhance one’s openness to persuasion.
In the video, when Alexis and Prem were having a fight, Jia Ling passed
and went to persuade them to stop fighting. Jia Ling was in a calm and
good mood. Therefore, Prem and Alexis were opened to his persuasion
and stopped their fight.
7. Cost-benefit model of helping
Cost-benefit model of helping states that a person is more inclined to help
others when it will help them as well. In addition, a person will weigh
others’ needs with their own where they will only help if it does not “cost”
too much in the aspect of time and effort.
In the video, Lawrence offered to listen to Alexis’s problems as he wanted
to ask Alexis a mathematical question because she is very good at maths.
He benefited by helping her as it did not take much to gain her help in his
maths question. On the other hand, Christine benefited from the act where
she offered to buy Prem a drink so as to get close to him after knowing
that he had a fight with his girlfriend. 3 months later, Prem broke-up with
Alexis and Christine became his girlfriend.
