Are Hispanics considered a minority only due to their numbers? Other relevant concepts that might apply to what you’ve written here might be symbolic interaction and cultural differentiation.
You needed to apply two theories this week. You might have used social identity theory to explain your feeling of comfort around those like you in terms of the ethnicity and social status. You might also have used Interactionist theory to explain the process of cultural transmission of Hispanic norms and values, especially those that apply to Hispanic males as well as to explain why skin color may be significant in the U.S. while it is not as significant in Latin American countries. Interactionists would also suggest that taking one’s time may be interpreted as being lazy in the US and this might result in conflict. Our culture shapes our perceptions and in turn, this influences how we react to those who are not like us in certain respects. Your APA format is very good overall. If the information cited is quoted material, then you also need to include the page number on which the quoted material is located.

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn

Understanding Differences in Perspectives on the
Care and Education of Infants and Toddlers
Step 1: Interview Setup
Identify an adult who you would like to interview based on the following criteria:
· He or she is a parent of or family member who lives with a child age three or under. (Note: Although the suggested interview questions are written for parents, you may modify the wording to be appropriate for another family member who has a close relationship with the child.)
· His or her cultural framework appears to be similar to yours. (To determine this, take time to consider your own cultural background and the insights you gained from the Application in Week 1.)
Then, contact the person you would like to interview and inform him or her that you are working on a course on cultural and family studies for infant/toddler professionals and would like to learn about his or her perspectives on the care and education of an infant or toddler in his or her family.
Schedule the interview, which should take approximately 30 minutes or longer.
Step 2: Pre-Interview Writing
Before the interview, write a paragraph describing your interviewee and explaining why you believe his or her cultural framework might be similar to yours.
Step 3: Interview
Conduct the interview. While you may be accustomed to casual two-way conversation with your interviewee, be sure to keep the focus of this interview on learning about your interviewee’s perspectives. You will have an opportunity to reflect on your own views after the interview concludes.
During the interview:
· Focus on creating a sense of trust.
· Ask open-ended questions and allow plenty of time for your interviewee to think about his or her response.
· Listen deeply to what is said (or not said), without judgment.
· Observe the person’s demeanor. Notice any verbal and nonverbal cues that may indicate that he or she feels uncomfortable.
The following questions are provided as a reference and reflect the content you will be exploring throughout this course. You may wish to amend these questions or add new ones based on this week’s Learning Resources.

Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter
n
. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

Final Project: Cultural Immersion
Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.
In order to complete this project successfully, you will need to work on it throughout the entire course. As part of the project, each of you will select a culture different from your own and participate in at least three distinct cultural immersion experiences/observations within that culture. The idea is to gradually immerse into the different culture over the course of the term. You may use the list of suggestions below to guide your immersion process or you can devise some ideas of your own. It is essential that each experience is qualitatively different from that of your own culture and that the experiences gradually become more involved directly with the culture of choice.
1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:
· Identification and Description of Population: This section must clearly identify the population you will be studying, how this population is different from you, and what your perceptions of this group are at this point in life. The description of differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.). Please state all the differences you can identify. Your perceptions of this group should include information such as what you were told about this group as you were growing up, any beliefs/perceptions/assumptions you have about this group, what your sources of information about this group have been in the past, and why you have an interest in this group. In this section, you must make a case for how this person is different from you and why this experience will be challenging for you.

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn

Understanding Differences in Perspectives on the
Care and Education of Infants and Toddlers
Step 1: Interview Setup
Identify an adult who you would like to interview based on the following criteria:
· He or she is a parent of or family member who lives with a child age three or under. (Note: Although the suggested interview questions are written for parents, you may modify the wording to be appropriate for another family member who has a close relationship with the child.)
· His or her cultural framework appears to be similar to yours. (To determine this, take time to consider your own cultural background and the insights you gained from the Application in Week 1.)
Then, contact the person you would like to interview and inform him or her that you are working on a course on cultural and family studies for infant/toddler professionals and would like to learn about his or her perspectives on the care and education of an infant or toddler in his or her family.
Schedule the interview, which should take approximately 30 minutes or longer.
Step 2: Pre-Interview Writing
Before the interview, write a paragraph describing your interviewee and explaining why you believe his or her cultural framework might be similar to yours.
Step 3: Interview
Conduct the interview. While you may be accustomed to casual two-way conversation with your interviewee, be sure to keep the focus of this interview on learning about your interviewee’s perspectives. You will have an opportunity to reflect on your own views after the interview concludes.
During the interview:
· Focus on creating a sense of trust.
· Ask open-ended questions and allow plenty of time for your interviewee to think about his or her response.
· Listen deeply to what is said (or not said), without judgment.
· Observe the person’s demeanor. Notice any verbal and nonverbal cues that may indicate that he or she feels uncomfortable.
The following questions are provided as a reference and reflect the content you will be exploring throughout this course. You may wish to amend these questions or add new ones based on this week’s Learning Resources.
Interview Questions
Before you begin asking questions, take a little time to talk about how you have begun to conceptualize culture, as well as what your own identity means to you. Then, naturally segue into the first interview question.

Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter
n
. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

While you are expected to use the informed consent form in keeping with ethical practices for data collection, you do not need to submit it to the instructor as part of the assignment.
Ask the respondents the following questions and record their answers:
When you hear the word diversity mentioned in the workplace, in the media, or in casual conversation, what meaning do you assign this term?
Does a particular race, ethnic group, or other minority group come to mind when you think of diversity? Does one of these groups pertain to you?
Do you think the majority of people in our culture:
Respect cultural differences among groups of people.
Show indifference to cultural differences.
Lack respect for cultural differences. Explain each choice.
If you were to make a suggestion about how our culture should handle diversity over the next decade, what would it be?
Compile your responses and write a brief reflection paper (two pages) on your findings. Specifically address the following issues:
What did you discover was the general attitude toward diversity in our culture?
Is diversity more associated with one race, ethnic, or other minority group than with others? If so, explain why this might be the case.
Compare and contrast the respondent's views with your own. How would you answer the same questions?
Your response should be at least two pages long. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Final Project: Cultural Immersion
Cultural Competence is an essential aspect of counselor training. In order to begin to understand a culture, it is essential to have sustained interaction with the culture. For the final project for this course, each student will be responsible for actively investigating multicultural issues in the “real world,” by gradually immersing in a culture different from their own. The immersion project will involve experiential learning about other cultures. The intent is to increase your knowledge and sensitivity to other cultures.
In order to complete this project successfully, you will need to work on it throughout the entire course. As part of the project, each of you will select a culture different from your own and participate in at least three distinct cultural immersion experiences/observations within that culture. The idea is to gradually immerse into the different culture over the course of the term. You may use the list of suggestions below to guide your immersion process or you can devise some ideas of your own. It is essential that each experience is qualitatively different from that of your own culture and that the experiences gradually become more involved directly with the culture of choice.
1. The activities you select must include active involvement in the culture/activity. In other words, you may “observe” the culture but you may not limit the activity to passive observation. Make sure that each activity involves interaction with members of the culture, either through active participation in the activity itself or through conversations with members of the culture. Of course your third activity, the personal dialogue, already requires your active participation.
2. Submit a written narrative of your immersion activities. The paper will be 8-10 pages long (typed, double-spaced, 12 point font), This paper must include the following elements:
· Identification and Description of Population: This section must clearly identify the population you will be studying, how this population is different from you, and what your perceptions of this group are at this point in life. The description of differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.). Please state all the differences you can identify. Your perceptions of this group should include information such as what you were told about this group as you were growing up, any beliefs/perceptions/assumptions you have about this group, what your sources of information about this group have been in the past, and why you have an interest in this group. In this section, you must make a case for how this person is different from you and why this experience will be challenging for you.
· Observation: You will need to complete at least three observational activities of the group you have chosen to study. Examples and suggestions of observational activities are listed below. If y ...
