Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, also known as pseudogout, commonly affects the elderly but rarely affects younger patients unless occurring with another disease. It involves the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joints which can cause sudden attacks of pain, swelling and tenderness in one or more joints. The big toe, wrist, elbow, shoulder and knee are most commonly affected.
