This document provides information on property level protection (PLP) measures homeowners can take to protect their properties from flooding. It discusses resistance measures like barriers, flood doors, airbrick covers and pumps that prevent floodwater from entering and resilience measures like waterproof plaster and raising electric sockets that minimize damage if flooding occurs. 2. What can I do to prepare?
For communities in flood risk areas, preparation is a key defence. Property
level protection (PLP) is a process undertaken by individual property owners
to protect their homes and business from flooding. PLP includes resistance
measures (the fitting of manufactured products, such as barrier and airbrick
covers, aimed at preventing flood water from entering the property) and
resilience measures (actions taken to minimise damage caused by flooding).
HOW CAN I PROTECT MY PROPERTY?
Resistance measures
Barriers come in various shapes and sizes and can be fitted to openings
such as doors, windows and even cat flaps. They provide a watertight seal
to keep floodwater out of your home.
Automatic flood doors are now available that require no manual
deployment on receipt of a flood warning. Simply close and lock the door.
These are of value where there is little or no warning of a flood and where
residents would find it difficult to fit manual barriers.
Non-return valves (NRVs) can be fitted to drains around your home to
prevent floodwater backing-up. They can also be used to prevent backing-
up and ingress of sewage in foul chambers.
Airbrick/vent covers can be placed over existing airbricks/vents or
existing airbricks can be replaced with automatically closing airbricks.
Both options create a seal to prevent floodwater entering a property.
Pumps can help keep floodwater at manageable levels for those at risk of
rising groundwater entering through the floor of the property.

3. Resilience measures
Even in the most prepared household, water can still find its way in. Measures
like waterproof plaster, solid concrete floors and tiled floor coverings can reduce
the time it takes to get back to normal after a flood. Other preventive steps
include raising electric sockets above likely flood levels and moving paperwork
and valuables to higher levels to minimise potential damage.
