This document summarizes a study examining the extent to which pronunciation research is represented in applied linguistics academic journals over the past decade. The authors analyzed 14 journals from 1999-2008 and found that on average, pronunciation articles made up only 4-7% of total articles. While some journals had special issues on pronunciation, this area remains underrepresented in the literature. The authors also categorized the topics of pronunciation articles and found that teacher education received the least attention with only 5 articles addressing this area. Pedagogical implications and intelligibility were among the most common topics. Overall, the study suggests that despite new textbooks and resources, pronunciation research still receives relatively little focus from researchers.
