Up grading fish hatchery
With hatching and nursery units is on going project.
22. CHALLENGES
The first challenge was a ban of fingerling production by
the ministry suspecting fish virus at our hatchery. That
effected our production and distribution of fingerlings.
Last February 2023 the report was given to the ministry
with the help of FAO in Siavonga and it was discovered
that and suspected virus and fish diseases where not on
our farm but on Chabeshi river to our farmers in
Shiwangandu. Where same fish were collected.
23. WAY FORWARD
We will continue to be fingerling producer in the province
by commercializing the production with open, hapa and
indoor hatchery systems.
Broodstock unit
Hatching unit
Nursery unit
We also continue looking for financial support and
business partnership in the fish value chain business
25. Experiences from Kasakalabwe
• Kasakalabwe are the fingerings producers both O. macrochir and
catfish .
• Targets to produce one million fingerings of macrochir and five
hundred thousand for catfish.
• In 2021 to 2023 we produced 1,070 000 fingerlings for macrochir fish
species
• Our markets covers farmers in Northern Province, including the CEEC
beneficiaries
• Mortality rate for our fingerlings is around 10%
• We have not been able to produce catfish fingerlings since 2020 due to
low pressure of water in the hatchery.
26. Fingerling Production
• Number of broodstock for females has
increased from 1334 in 2022 to 4877 in
2023. Male broodstock also increased
from 666 in 2022 to 2438 in 202.
• We have made some improvements in
the green house hatchery, so in 2024 we
target to increase production to 1, 838. 875
fingerings
12/6/2023
28
29. CHALLENGES
• Due to low supply of water in both hatcheries, mortality rate will
be higher during production season.
• High temperatures and fungal infections breakout in Northern
Province
• This has affected our production target

31. ACTIVITIES UNDER AICCRA
•Dissemination of CIS CSA technologies targeting 75,000 (40%
women) beneficiaries
•Promoting integrated Aquaculture Agriculture System through
expressive arts
•Dissemination of information on Climate Smart Agriculture through
short tailor made films
•Promoting integrated Aquaculture Agriculture System through pre
recorded short drama clips
•Purchase of additional equipment and materials for out door use and
increased visibility.
32. Road Shows - Gender Inclusion Experience
Kasama Arts ensured that it targeted women specifically and
made sure that 50% of farmers reached were women.
This was done through affirmative action (positive
discrimination) where we had specific groups that are
exclusively female dominated. These groups are in Ngulula,
Kapata, Kalafya, Mwamba,
34. Beam Shows .......
The films were gender sensitive, and specifically gear
messaging to the specific context and needs of women.
We employed the aspect of Gender Equity. (Treating men
and women differently in accordance with their
respective needs) In this context equity entails focusing
more on issues affecting women and addressing the
needs of women without necessarily neglecting the
welfare of men. The essence was to address the needs of
men and women using a gender lens.
36. Radio Drama
Timing of radio drama was done in such ways that women
can listen to it at a time that does not clash with other major
household tasks. Kasama Arts rehearsed with the radio
stations to allocate evening times between 6pm and 8pm.
This was to ensure that no one is left behind and maximum
listener-ship is attained. The targeted radio stations were:
Radio Mano, Radio Kasama, Radio Luswepo, Lutanda Radio,
KFM Bangwela radio, Luapula Radio , Tuta radio, Lukwanga
Radio, Kalungwishi radio and Radio Yangeni, One Love
Radio Walamo Radio, Liberty and Lwansase. however only
two were used.
43. Experience on linking farmers to output
markets
• Triple Blessing is the trading business center registered as Triple C
shopping Complex in Luwingu district.
• Our role in our bundle partnership is of an off taker, linking farmers to
their needful services. We buy fish, grains, livestock and livestock
products and other farm products.
• We reach farmers by using our local radio station, workshops,
teaching them using our seven demo ponds, phone calls, WhatsApp
groups, one to one and we take opportunity of some other public
gatherings.
45. Our experience
• We have so far managed to buy to buy and sold 2500kg of fish in the
past 8 months.
• As Triple Blessing we have produced 850kg of fish from our demo
ponds and we are in the district record to be the highest producer of
fish in this year.
• 80% of women are our customers for fish and livestock products in
our supermarket and the demand keeps on increasing.
• We need to stock different sizes of fish to cutter for all people’s needs.
• With livestock products, it is better to cut pieces of chickens than
selling the whole bird.
• We do sale our products at an affordable prices.
• People love learning by seeing.
46. Experiences from Triple Blessings
• We are encouraging people to producing fish and livestock at a
commercial level to meet the market demand.
• We are also being motivated to start commercial production of
fish and livestock.
• We have sponsored a group of 10 women and 10 men working
together in Kachila’s village to make a communal demo pond
on which they will learn more about integrated farming and the
qualification to a member, one must have at least a fishpond
and have started keeping some livestock
