Computer-based testing (CBT) offers a variety of advantages over paper-based testing including improved security and ease of longitudinal tracking of student performance over all phases of the curriculum. However, CBT, like any other innovation, should be implemented thoughtfully. Any successful implementation strategy must account for student acceptance and provide sufficient practice that the extraneous cognitive load is minimized.
While extraneous cognitive load should decrease with use, it has also been shown that student opinion toward CBT improves with exposure. Following use of CBT, students perceive the system to be easier to use and they express more confidence in the technology. Still, there is an increased level of anxiety whenever a new technology is introduced. Students’ first experience to CBT should be deliberately designed to address common concerns. Practice quizzes can improve student acceptance of and option toward computer based testing but even these should be developed thoughtfully.
In this session, we will briefly describe our approach to the issue of student acceptance and how we utilized student concerns from a pilot to inform our full-scale implementation. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their strategies and plans with the goal of developing a consensus around the subject of student orientation to maximize acceptance of CBT.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Participants will become aware of the types of cognitive load that can impact student performance during CBT.
2) Participants will become familiar with the literature on student acceptance of educational technologies.
3) Participants will have the opportunity to share concerns about and strategies for student acceptance of CBT.
4) Participants will take part in building a consensus around best practices for student orientation to CBT.

The design cycle personal project connection
The Design Cycle outlines the process for completing research and creative work in the IB program. Becoming Agile in a Non-Disruptive Way: Is it Possible?

Due to the increasing popularity of Agile Software Development (ASD), more software development teams are planning to transit to ASD. As ASD substantially differs from the traditional Software Development (TSD), there are a number of issues and challenges that needs to be overcome when transiting to ASD. One of the most difficult challenges here is acquiring an agile “mindset”. The question arises whether it is possible to acquire this mindset with the minimum disruption of an already established TSD process. The paper tries to answer this question by developing a non-disruptive method of transition to ASD, while using a knowledge transformation perspective to identify the main features of ASD mindset and how it differs from the one of TSD. To map the current mindset and plan the movement to the mindset that is more agile, the paper suggests using a process modelling technique that considers the development process as a socio-technical system with components that correspond to the phases of the development process. The method suggested in the paper has been designed in connection to a business case of a development team interested to transit to agility in a non-disruptive manner.

YASQLT – Yet Another SQL Tutor. A Pragmatic Approach
The paper describes an ongoing project of creating an automated assessment tool to help novice students learning SQL in a frame of an introductory database course. In difference to other tools of this kind, the project has chosen a pragmatic approach of focusing on catching common semantic errors, leaving syntax control to professional DBMS. Using agile system development, the project successfully completed two iterations, both of which were tested in practice with satisfactory results. The students appreciated the tool and would like to have similar tools for other subjects, including Relational Algebra, and Conceptual Modeling. The latter is planned for implementation in the near future. The tool is considered to be appropriate for Learning by Failure in the situation of large size classes and short courses.

Key Challenges in Agile RE @XP2017
Agile Software Development (ASD) is becoming more popular in all fields of industry. For an agile transformation, organizations need to continuously improve their established approaches to Requirements Engineering (RE) as well as their approaches to software development. This is accompanied by some challenges in terms of agile RE. The main objective of this paper is to identify the most important challenges in agile RE industry has to face today. Therefore, we conducted an iterative expert judgement process with 26 experts in the field of ASD, comprising three complementary rounds. In sum, we identified 20 challenges in three rounds. Six of these challenges are defined as key challenges. Based on the results, we provide options for dealing with those key challenges by means of agile techniques and tools. The results show that the identified challenges are often not limited to ASD, but they rather refer to software development in general. Therefore, we can conclude that organizations still struggle with agile transition and understanding agile values, in particular, in terms of stakeholder and user involvement.
