Introduction
Lighting DESIGN is a primary element in architecture design and interior architecture. Solid volumes,
enclosed spaces, colors and texture can only be appreciated fully when they are imaginatively lit.
Successful buildings are those in which the lighting of the building itself and the lighting of the activities it
contains together make up a unified design concept. This project is design to expose and introduce students
to daylighting and lighting requirement in a suggested space.
In architecture and interior architecture, Acoustic DESIGN is an element which concerned with control of
sound in spaces especially enclosed spaces. The requirement varies in relation to functional spaces
whether it is a cinema, lecture theatre, restaurant and café or acoustical requirements for a meeting room. It
is essential to preserve and enhance the desired sound and to eliminate noise and undesired sound.
Prestigious buildings are those in which the acoustic of the building itself speak of the quality of the building
itself. This project is design to expose and introduce students to acoustic design and acoustical
requirements in a suggested space.

Objectives of Assignment
• To understand the day-lighting & lighting and acoustic characteristics & acoustic requirement in a
suggested space.
• To determine the characteristics and function of day-lighting & artificial lighting and sound &
acoustic within the intended space.
• To critically report and analyse the space.
Learning Outcomes
• Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement
eg. natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which
effects the lighting design of a space.
• Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction
technology and building materials on existing building projects.
• Able to evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in
relevance to present construction industry
• Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or
calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI.
• Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain
methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient.
Tasks - Methodology
This assignment is intended to be completed in a group of 6/7 students per group to evaluate their
environment in terms of lighting and acoustics performances. Each group is required to choose a case
study from the list of buildings provided. Prepare a measured drawing with appropriate scale of your case
study. Show all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions of your case
study.
They should carry out an appraisal of day-lighting artificial lighting, noise and sound condition(quality and
quantity) in the selected case study. Their identification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/noise
for the case study needed to be carried out objectively.
Analyse and evaluate:
For Lighting
§ The site conditions (sky condition, building orientation, etc)
§ Take readings of daylight level, lighting level and photos (digital images) in the chosen case
study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night).
§ Present the analysis in a lighting contour diagram.
§ Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
§ Daylighting and lighting condition (identify the problems)
§ Present all your findings graphically as much as possible
§ Provide the calculation for the existing design.
For Acoustic
§ The general site conditions (eg. Highway, main roads adjacent to your case study)
§ Take readings of sound level indoor and outdoor and photos (digital images) in the chosen
case study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night).
§ Present the analysis in a noise contour diagram.
§ Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.
§ Indoor and outdoor noise (identify the problems)

§ Present all your findings graphically as much as possible
§ Provide the calculation for the existing design.
In order to carry out this project, each group are to collect lux-meter and sound level meter. Please be
responsible in collecting, using and returning the equipments.
(*Loss or damage to the equipment will result in a charge of RM2400.00 to the students).
Submission Requirement
Submit a CAREFULLY ORGANISED
• A4 bound technical report complete with visuals, sketches measured drawings inclusive of the
detailing and documentation of your project. A digital summary of work (one A2 for acoustics and
one A2 for lighting) should be uploaded in TIMeS Dropbox which is provided by lecturer.
• Visuals / Photos used in the submission must be clear and well communicated.
• Sketches are meant to provide visual documentation and communication. Therefore sketches are
required to be neat, clear and annotated.
• Necessary elevation, section and axonometric of all construction elements relevant to lighting
design analysis covered in the syllabus.
• Assumptions can be made through reference from book/drawings. DO NOT PLAGIARISE.
Application must be according to case study context.
• Softcopy is required to be attached with the hardcopy.

Assessment criteria
The assessment for this assignment will be based on your
• demonstrated understanding of the brief
• quality of the documentation of images, drawings and detailing of the construction elements which is
relevant to lighting design.
• creativity and clarity of ideas, materiality and richness of content
• clear visual and verbal communication of your understanding of the projects.
• quality and clarity of your drawings.
• ability to use softwares or lighting tools analysis.
• demonstrated the analysis and conclusion based on mathematical calculations and validation method.

BUILDING SCIENCE 2 (ARC 3413])/(BLD61303) 1 SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN Center for Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA) Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture) BUILDING SCIENCE 2 (ARC 3413])/(BLD61303) Credit hours: 3 Prerequisite: None Semester: 5 ____________________________________________________________________________________ Project 1 [Lighting & Acoustic Performance Evaluation and Design] Group/Individual 1,2,3 Week 8 18/05/ 2016 By 12 pm 40% Hardcopy and digital upload Introduction Lighting DESIGN is a primary element in architecture design and interior architecture. Solid volumes, enclosed spaces, colors and texture can only be appreciated fully when they are imaginatively lit. Successful buildings are those in which the lighting of the building itself and the lighting of the activities it contains together make up a unified design concept. This project is design to expose and introduce students to daylighting and lighting requirement in a suggested space. In architecture and interior architecture, Acoustic DESIGN is an element which concerned with control of sound in spaces especially enclosed spaces. The requirement varies in relation to functional spaces whether it is a cinema, lecture theatre, restaurant and café or acoustical requirements for a meeting room. It is essential to preserve and enhance the desired sound and to eliminate noise and undesired sound. Prestigious buildings are those in which the acoustic of the building itself speak of the quality of the building itself. This project is design to expose and introduce students to acoustic design and acoustical requirements in a suggested space.
  • 2. BUILDING SCIENCE 2 (ARC 3413])/(BLD61303) 2 Objectives of Assignment • To understand the day-lighting & lighting and acoustic characteristics & acoustic requirement in a suggested space. • To determine the characteristics and function of day-lighting & artificial lighting and sound & acoustic within the intended space. • To critically report and analyse the space. Learning Outcomes • Able to produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement eg. natural and artificial lighting. (Pictures, sketches and drawing) and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of a space. • Explore and apply understanding of building physic eg. Lighting towards building / construction technology and building materials on existing building projects. • Able to evaluate and explore the improvisation by using current material and technology in relevance to present construction industry • Basic understanding and analysis of lighting layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Lumen method and PSALI. • Basic understanding and analysis of acoustic design layout and arrangements by using certain methods or calculations eg. Reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient. Tasks - Methodology This assignment is intended to be completed in a group of 6/7 students per group to evaluate their environment in terms of lighting and acoustics performances. Each group is required to choose a case study from the list of buildings provided. Prepare a measured drawing with appropriate scale of your case study. Show all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions of your case study. They should carry out an appraisal of day-lighting artificial lighting, noise and sound condition(quality and quantity) in the selected case study. Their identification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/noise for the case study needed to be carried out objectively. Analyse and evaluate: For Lighting § The site conditions (sky condition, building orientation, etc) § Take readings of daylight level, lighting level and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night). § Present the analysis in a lighting contour diagram. § Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions. § Daylighting and lighting condition (identify the problems) § Present all your findings graphically as much as possible § Provide the calculation for the existing design. For Acoustic § The general site conditions (eg. Highway, main roads adjacent to your case study) § Take readings of sound level indoor and outdoor and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (morning, noon, afternoon and at night). § Present the analysis in a noise contour diagram. § Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions. § Indoor and outdoor noise (identify the problems)
  • 3. BUILDING SCIENCE 2 (ARC 3413])/(BLD61303) 3 § Present all your findings graphically as much as possible § Provide the calculation for the existing design. In order to carry out this project, each group are to collect lux-meter and sound level meter. Please be responsible in collecting, using and returning the equipments. (*Loss or damage to the equipment will result in a charge of RM2400.00 to the students). Submission Requirement Submit a CAREFULLY ORGANISED • A4 bound technical report complete with visuals, sketches measured drawings inclusive of the detailing and documentation of your project. A digital summary of work (one A2 for acoustics and one A2 for lighting) should be uploaded in TIMeS Dropbox which is provided by lecturer. • Visuals / Photos used in the submission must be clear and well communicated. • Sketches are meant to provide visual documentation and communication. Therefore sketches are required to be neat, clear and annotated. • Necessary elevation, section and axonometric of all construction elements relevant to lighting design analysis covered in the syllabus. • Assumptions can be made through reference from book/drawings. DO NOT PLAGIARISE. Application must be according to case study context. • Softcopy is required to be attached with the hardcopy.
