INFORMATION
WELCOME TO M-POWERED
QUICK HISTORY
• Established in 2004 between Manufacturers, HTC and HIRED
with MN state grant funding.
• Why? Manufacturers identified the need to train their own and
saw a large workforce shortage coming with impending
retirements and few skilled replacement workforce.
• M-Powered is an award-winning training model that has
successfully trained hundreds of Minnesotans into a
manufacturing career.
• Received multiple grants:
• most recently a US DOL $2.6M.
WHAT IS M-POWERED?
FAST: M-Powered is a FastTrack training program that couples
together technical training, critical/soft skills and industry
credentials.
COHORTS: Students are in cohort groups. This creates more
synergy and team work while in the classroom.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT: Critical/Soft skills are integrated into
the technical training to produce a career-minded employee.
CAREER FAIR: At the end of level 2, students are invited to a
career fair organized just for them.
WHAT IS M-POWERED?
CREDENTIALS: Industry credentials are integrated into the
curriculum providing individuals with the opportunity to earn one
or more industry specific credentials.
• National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS), American
Quality Society (ASQ), ICP Certification, American Welding
Society (AWS)
WRAP-AROUND SERVICES: Counseling is provided to help
reduce employment and educational barriers.
• Identify resources for barriers like childcare, bus fare, and
temporary employment.
• Work with individuals to create career development plans to
keep you on track for achieving your goals.
M-POWERED TRAINING MODEL:
THREE LEVELS - MACHINING
Level I: Manufacturing Fundamentals
• Learn foundational manufacturing skills like blueprint
reading, metrology, math, and inspection.
• Opportunity to Earn: 9 college credits and 1 credential (NIMS:
Measurement, Materials and Safety).
Level II: Specialized Lab
• You choose the path that best fits your interest and desires - CNC
Mill, CNC Lathe, or Quality.
• Opportunity to Earn: 8-9 college credits and 1 or more credential(s)
(NIMS: Milling I; ASQ: CQI)
Level III: Internship or On-the-Job Training
• After finding manufacturing employment, continue your learning through a
competency-based apprenticeship.
• Opportunity to Earn: 2 college credits
M-POWERED TRAINING MODEL:
ONE LEVEL - WELDING
In addition to the 3-level machining classes, there is a 1-level welding
option.
• One semester
• Opportunity to earn: 17 college credits, MIG Welding Occupational
Certificate, AWS Certification
What is GMAW Production Wedler (MIG) Certificate?
This certificate will provide the student with entry-level skills and knowledge to
perform as a gas metal arc welder (GMAW) with minimum supervision in all
positions in the following areas: production manufacturing, pipe/tubing, food
industry, aerospace, and ornamental/sculpture, on ferrous and non ferrous metals.
You can obtain entry-level employment by just taking a few courses that will lead
towards a certificate in MIG or TIG welding. Taking additional courses will provide
you with the opportunity for job advancement as a welder. Welding courses are
also valuable for persons who have careers or interests that require some welding
knowledge.
